Before people start spewing crap that Syd was "gone" and that this is off-time, it's the Soft Machine (the band playing with him) that can't keep up.
Syd had this thing by then not letting the musicians rehearse the song, but going straight in recording it and having them follow his guitar. He'd change the tempo and time signature a lot and wouldn't let them re-record it.
If you listen to the song "No Good Trying", they also barely kept up there, but that track produced some stunning drumming.
That was great. I love the live part after 1:25 as Norm here said. Dark side of trippy huh? Wow! Its such an instant success movie idea! Syd's crazy, dark, trippy, adventure filled psychedelic '67 rockstar and post rockstar life coupled with the ideology and reflection of Pink Floyd. WOW! TOO MUCH!
This is simply the best fan made video in tribute of Syd that I've EVER seen. Someone called it a labor of love - it certainly was. I can't even imagine how long it took to put this together. Taking still shots and turning them in animated snippets - it's like seeing brand new video footage of Syd after all of these years. Amazing.
Face it there has always been musical differences between what Syd wanted to write and what the rest of the band wanted to write. Evidence is the huge difference between Piper at the Gates of Dawn which is a true psychedelic album and the Progressive albums of post-syd PF. Personally I don't think Syd would have fit in well with where they were going. Anyways Syd's solo albums are great and I'm glad he wrote what he wanted to write instead of writing what others wanted him to write.
Also, this song should have been of the Wouldn't You Miss Me CD. This, or No Man's Land, Milky Way or the Late Night instrumental should have been on it.
And Feel. I can't believe they decided to leave out Feel.
why dont you guys stop bashing gilmour and waters and just enjoy the music.the fact is that none of you know the true story except the band.and maybe just maybe syd being a drug addict had some effect that they could not control and he left on his own drug induced fantasy world that HE put himself in.yes he was a genius and was very talented and one of the founding members of pink floyd but waters and gilmour took it to another level that he was not capable of doing or handeling.
This is what the Floyd would have sounded like if Syd stayed in the band. Personally I prefer the album version with double tracked vocals and its just better produced. But I beleive Gilmour and Waters somewhat sabataged the album cause they wanted people to know what was "really" going on with Syd. The false starts and low fi quality make the album more endearing but I think they were trying to prove "hey, this guys fucked up thats why we booted him from the Floyd". They did Syd dirty no doubt.
You don't know what you are talking about! On what factual basis do you say that Gilmour or Waters sabotaged Syd and did dirty to him? All interviews and records suggest that Waters had little to nothing to do with this album, while Gilmour did a great deal to help Syd with the production of the album.
I say they sabotaged him on the fact that Dave Gilmour admitted and I quote, "I don't know why we left those false starts and outtakes on there, maybe we were trying to punish him in a way". As for doing Syd dirty? "SHALL WE PICK SYD UP?", "NO FUCK HIM, LETS NOT BOTHER".(actual conversation that took place when they ditched him on the way to a gig.) And Waters was credited as a co-producer pal, that's a fact. And I'm sure I'm more educated then you as I've read every Barrett biography available.
You may be more educated "then" me, but my dad can beat up yours, so there. Not picking up Syd for a gig, or for that matter, throwing him out of the band, would have only been doing him dirty, if Syd was doing his job and playing the gigs. Haven't you ever interacted with a drug addict or an alcoholic? And how is it that Syd doesn't take any blame from you for the production quality of his own albums?
That's real cute and funny. That Daddy comment. You started that gay banter with "Go educate yourself",so don't try to act above it when I respond to it. And Syd was playing the gigs, just maybe not to Roger Waters liking, or the rest of the band. And yes I have interacted with plenty of drug addicts and alcoholics, I've also been one. And I don't blame Syd for the production quality of his albums dear boy because he wasn't the producer. That would have mainly been your boy Gilmours job.
@DaveS12382 The only person who "sabotaged" is Syd himself. In the past I also thought that Syd was treated wrong. But face the truth: Pink Floyd gave him several chances. Have a 2nd guitar player, become the songwriter, three members helping him with his solo records. Point is: it's no one's fault. Some people are just lost.
The "all interviews" you quote are all versions of the members of PF who cowardly kicked Syd out. Unfortunately Syd never gave an interview to say what HE thought about what they did. It is possible that they "helped" Syd in order to keep him away. And in the process might have done a little sabotage. Why instead of "helping" him they did not invite him back to HIS band, the Pink Floyd? Those guys acted like snakes.
@BlueJoe21 Stories about poor Syd being the victim of a conspiracy are what really make him look like a fool. Syd has had several interviews in which he could have complained about Pink Floyd. He didn't. He visited them, instead.
Why didn't Syd continue without Pink Floyd? Why did 'Stars' fail? Were the other 'Stars' members also snakes? People blame Pink Floyd for not being the doctor who could save Syd.
this is the version I have on my ipod, I got it off limewire and thought that it was the actual Octopus. Having heard both, i still am rather fond of this one.
the version on "Madcap Laughs" is a bit more cohesive...his vocals seem more in line w/ the music...it's fun hearing this version though....wacky..Soft Machine must have had fun trying to keep up with his wayward ramblings
@orzabal1983islove ...went to waste and died once he was no longer on television and recording music with a popular band. I really feel for this guy and his overlooked talents and potential. Be sure not to ever forget the beauty and potential of some of the "normal people" who are all around you. You may be overlooking someone.
That is great! The "silent movie" feel with the whimsical "Octopus" outtake, the film like a find from 1900, but not. ...A broken down song and you've "broken" down the images and made it into animation...You're an artist, C!!!:-D
The video is funny as hell even though syd with short hair is scary :D. And the broken guitar solo is perfection... i wihs there was a 9 minute version at least ;)
I love the smirk he has in that photo! It's like he's recalling a private joke, perhaps a bittersweet one. And what exactly is a joke? The madcap laughs, indeed. Shine on, Syd!
