very impressive!, but i do not have that kind of camera, what would be your advice, if i want to digitize a book, i mean what kind the camera do i need??, what would be the minimal requirements about the camera???
In the video I am using part of a vertical stand Zeiss for the Contax camera that my father bought in the 60s. This device is not manufactured at the present, but you can find something equivalent in the catalogs of Kaiser or Manfrotto. A cheap alternative is to get an old enlarger and screw the camera in it. In some models of MeOpta (an probably other brands) you can easyly dismount the projection head and replace with a camera.
shouldn't sweep down the center of the book like that .. puts finger grease in the binding and is not great for the physical contiguity of the binding (either) - plastically deforming the paper fibers and binding matrix .. book bindings are a compromise on so many levels .. ancient ones are only so much more sensitive to mishandling. Modern OCR can easily handle centreline distortion. No need for perfectly flat image .. get a lens with better depth of field. Trust this as reasonable.
It depends on the lens quality. Doesn't mean an expensive extra luminous zoom. I got the best results using a cheap 50 mm lens and aperture 5.6 to 8. Zoom and wide angle lenses are not advisable.
@VanMedia Read in this page my answer to superanima or watch my video " Digitizing bound volumes II ", the audio is in Spanish, but includes titles in English.
@lucirz oh scan tailor, i'm already using that :D. i thought you used something else. it's not perfect, but its very good, especially for a free software. i wish that it would get more attention and donations, so that it can improve even more.
OK, not bad , but put a exciton cable on your keyboard, and put it on the floor, and use your foot to to press the space bar, that will speed thing up a lot !!
I think you are speaking about any kind of pedal switch, aren't you?. A good idea. But I'm not sure, what means "exciton cable"?, can't find in google.
(English for the sake of everyone) I'd do it otherwise: heavy books (if not every book) need a a book support, could be a DIY acid-free cardboard one; I'd set the camera in 45° angle, and rotate it 180° taking 1 snap 1 page. Half the pages would be upside down, but that'd be fixed with batch processed rotation (IrfanView would do), and overall quality per page would be higher. I assume the pivoting camera in 45° contraption can be achieved with some professional tripod or device of the like.
My interest in bookscanning revolves around the idea of scanning parts of the book for further OCR and feeding into a database. Thus quality should be optimised to achieve lower error rates at OCR process, rather than "photorrealistic" accuracy
Wow, that's actually a pretty cool idea mate! Well done...you must have alot of spare time on your hands. Lol. What are you going to do with the books once you've photographed them though?
What is the maximum size of the preview image? Is it possible to change the size of the preview image? I want to view a whole page of A4 in full and be able to read the text on the preview video stream....
The software for remote shooting is Canon and it's INCLUDED with the camera. You can adjust aperture, speed, WB, manual focus etc. in the screen of your computer with no additional sofware, to shot press space bar.

Hi, what kind of column support did you have there?
And where can I find one? :-)

but the point is how large solution can be shoot? can it get 300dpi or more?
oscarsun72 2 years ago
The sensor size of the eos 450D is 4272x2848 pixel.
4272/300=14'
2848/300=9'
If your document is 9x14 inches you can get a 300dpi scannig, more if the original is smaller.
But, really do you need 300 dpi? Now you are reading a screen with less than 100dpi resolution.
citroen2cv 2 years ago
Thank you for your detailed answers!
9*14 inch about A4 size paper .that's ok.
I care about 300dpi because I need to OCR pictrues of books ;not only reading those on the screen.

@citroen2cv what software do u use to crop and edit the pics?
lucirz 1 year ago
@lucirz To crop and enhance the images I'm using Scan Tailor. This russian freeware works specially fine with only text books. And fully automatic.

@citroen2cv also can you answer me this? where did you get the stand to put the camera on? what's that stand called? it's not a tripod right?

Marca, modelo, etc...
- Que valores f (diafragma) recomienda?
Agradecido ya por su respuesta.

What is the configuration that you use in Canon 450D to make this photos?
Thanks
alcindoalmeida 3 years ago
