  • picture with marcus and the soprano sax is awesome.

  • Yup, we see and hear this great stuff every year at the North sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam. I have to save for it but after the festival I feel like a million dollar man.

  • @gre68 you sure can!

  • @musashi20emon I believe 8, 9 and 10 th of July 2012...North Sea Jazz festival Rotterdam. Buy a weekend ticket and you have one of the best musical weekend ever. Always looking forward to the days they present the playing artists..I ll be there!

  • @gre68 There is a 99% chance that i will be there too!

That sound awesome, thanks for the information!

  • LEE AND MARCUS RULE!

  • 2:41 jizz face

  • 0.23 reminds me of Ladies Night!

  • man get the funk outtta here

  • that's it right their.. there..ooooo s..

  • where did you get the pic @2:28?

  • @PennybagDarrell i thought that! It looks awesome doesn't it!

  • Mann i bet if u need a bassist for your recordings, go for this mann

  • @appiahao Well, that's if it he even WANTS to. This man right here can definitely play with anyone in this world. Its just a matter of whether or not he wants to :D

    Cheers, buddy.

  • Ha! They played this song at my old restaurant. Nice tune.

  • me and my band are going to try and play this but I can't find a good guitar or piano sheet music. Someone kind enough to point me out where I could get these? Thanks!

  • @wesman2232 Use your ears

  • @IchMagSechs I don't play piano, nor guitar. I play bass.

  • @wesman2232 true, just get a midi file of it if u can and import it into sebelius

  • What a sound! What a duo! Outstanding... I wanna move when I hear this song...

  • I wish I could vote up StrawberryJungle's comment 10000000 times!!

    this is so hip!

  • cool old dance grenate....cool memorys!!good jazz funk here!!!

  • Marcus Miller einfach Super!Ich sah ihn in Montreux in den 80iger.

    Er spielte mit Miles Davis!

Nachher traf ich ihn in der Montreux Casino Bar.

  • James Jamerson is the chief innovator for all this because he gave importance to the bass to be heard other than a rhythem instrument.

  • You left off of the list the innovator of the "slapping/ thumbing" technique that about all of the bass players that you have on your list incorporates, and that is none other than Mr. Larry Graham

  • 5-BEST INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE BASSIST...

    1-Marcus Miller

    2-Nathan East

    3-Stanley Clarke

    4-Nathaniel Phillips

    5a-Alphonso Johnson

    5b-Victor Wooten

    5c-Abe L.

  • Ties for 1. John Entwistle, Marcus Miller

    2,3,4+... Everyone else..

  • I would add Jaco Pastorious

  • where's Mr. Pastorius you motherfucker

  • and where is james jamerson? he should be at least on 2nd place

  • Don't understand what the bass at 1:00 had anything to do with anything... It wasn't even a nice looking bass.

  • Such a great song! I'm going to learn this one very soon. ;)

  • Marcus is a great bass player. Abe is a great bass player. Lee is a great guitarist. Abe can play whatever note enters his mind. Why split atoms? It's great music. Just leave it at that and enjoy!

  • I've heard him live a long time ago. It was a improvised question-answer solo with Al Jarreau. If you think so, I decide to think, it wasn't Abe's day. Al need to decend to very easy melodys, to get Abe to follow him.

  • Stupid!

If base-bass-man Abe sucks, you are a vaccuumcleaner to lift fisty stones on three lanes of an interstate-highway at 50mph in one wipe.

  • that's probably right then. and you must be a stupid cunt unable to see irony. idiot.

  • @CptChaos88

Not all people sign their comment with their clear names. Thank you,

    RFDlic

  • Lite Weight

  • This Is Marcus Miller... On "Rio" (album by Lee Ritenour) Marcus Miller playin' bass not Abe. Check it on wikipedia. :P -.-

  • No need, I have the vinyl-album. You've missunderstood, what i wanted to say: Abe doesn't play semiquaver-triplets.

  • @RFDlic lol... haven't heard "semiquaver" in a while... lol... I remember when I was living in Australia they were using "quavers, crotchets" and whatnot... Just say "quarter notes, half notes" etc. if you wanna be understood in the rest of the world...lol Where are you from by the way?

  • Germany.

    I've taken it from leo(dot)org.

So you say sixteenth and eighth notes?

    Sixteenth triplets?

  • OK. Yea, I think those "quavers" are maybe only used in England and Australia... I don't know. It's just safer to say 16ths, because there's 100% chance you'll be understood. When you say "quaver" maybe like 1 in 20 will know what you are talkin about...lol

  • @AleGorymusic It's only Americans that really use "eighth note" and "sixteenth note". The correct musical terms for these are "quaver" and "semiquaver". Any musician should understand what you are talking about when you use these terms...

  • @himynameislenny

In romania we use eight note and sixteenth note musical term as well,

  • @Loleczeqlolowaty You are correct sir. This IS Marcus Miller. I'm a bass player and BIG Marcus fan. That's him. Maybe slightly before the preamp was added to his bass. Very indicative of his early career. Find the Youtube video of him with GRP all-stars

  • It's a fusion of jazz and funk... it's called junk! Nah but this is some good stuff.

  • Don't forget the Latino.... peace

  • @WaltChingy has THE best comment ever

  • Gonna see him :) 6december, groningen holland! F*** Yeah!!

  • Groningen!

  • People are just too damned thoughtless with their 'thumbs down' power.

    @orlando

Yes, this is MM. noinwe, among others, have said everything to be said on that. But your query, your challenge, was legit and perfectly acceptable discourse; you weren't rude or churlish. I can't imagine why anyone would give you a thumbs down.

  • This is definitely Marcus and this sound just like my modified fender jazz.. and i own 3 yamaha's. hello..

  • right orlando it sounds more Abe than Marcus...

also the Bass tone sounds more Yamaha than a Fender..

also the guitar player is definetly Lee ritenour...

Rio Funk is a brazilian folk music called funk carioca...

i'm a marcus miller fun,,, also abe and lee's fun they are all my masters

  • Comment removed

  • I dont think that's Marcus on bass. I think it's Abe, it dosent even sound like Marcus tone. Marcus slap style is more precise than this recording.

  • That is definetly Marcus on bass. he actually wrote & produce this track for Ritenour. This was back in the early 80's, before marcus established his signiture sound.

  • Ok, you win. Thanks for the update. I have this recording somewhere in my collection from way back when. But you got to admit it dosent sound like Marcus.

  • You are correct, this tone is definetly not the Marcus tone we have all grown to love. But his tone has evolved over the yrs. He hooked up with Roger Sadowsky & the rest is history. But not much was added just a Bartolini preamp & a baddass bridge. Now ,it doesn't sound like Marcus tone, but the style is definetly Marcus. Man, Marcus was probably in his early 20's when this song was recorded. He has learned a hell of alot since then.

  • I never ever heard Abe Laboriel playing semiquaver-triplets.

  • it's marcus miller, lee ritenour played with Abe

  • no more Marcus but it still good

  • It's Marcus Miller. On this CD version Marcus Miller plays the bass. I happen to also have three transcription books (two are Japanese) and every version lists Marcus MIiler on bass. Plus, come on, this sounds more like Marcus than Abe!

  • Sounds like Marcus to me. Yep I have this album as well...it was originally my Grandfather's album and I inherited it. Lists Marcus on the liner notes.

  • Use your ears for gods sake. This is MARCUS MILLER. I havent meet him but i have tuned Onkel Abes bass ones and his sound is complitly different.

  • this is definetely Abraham Laboriel on bass and definetely Lee Ritenour on Guitar..........

  • Sorry, but your are wrong, it IS Marcus Miller... I own the CD and Rio Funk is definitively MM (actually, you can tell from listening ;-))

  • Sorry, but this iS Lee Ritenour, Abraham Laboriel on bass and Carlos Vega on Drums++. I have the cd and DVD recorded "live" in studio with all the above pluss Larry Williams, Dave and Don Grusin++ . I have also seen them several times since the 80`s. Thers no doubt Abraham is playing bass on this tune.Sinc.Morten

  • Well, you are right when you are referring to the live recording (e.g. GRP Live in Session, I own this one, too). But I was referring to the original (studio) recording ("Rio", GRP, released in 1979), where Marcus Miller is playing the bass of the tune "Rio Funk").

  • I believe you:)

    All the best. Morten

  • this is not marcus miller, but lee ritenour with abraham laboriel etc.

  • damn, this is too much for me to handle :D

A great track by a great man and his crew!

  • I know what you mean, I've got goosebumps! Love It!!

  • mmmmmmmmmm

  • This is my cup of tea

  • seriously thank God music like this can exist :D

  • I agree! If this delicious music was as popular as shite like Lady Gaga is now, then the world would be a much cooler, funkier and better place.

  • well said indeed!

  • @StrawberryJungle

    I second that!!

  • @StrawberryJungle True dat, brother.

  • this is lee ritenour

  • Er...sounds a lot like the original...um..

  • are there chords for free???

    I couldn´t find anything

  • It is written in the liner notes that the bassist of this tune is Luizao Maia...

    Error in writing?

  • MUITO BOM ESTE SOM ISTO SIM

  • no offence to marcus at all but i like the version with Abe Laborial better

  • As do I.

  • was he playing flatwounds at this time?

  • Don't think Marcus was using flats on this recording...strings were probably just broken in a bit.You can still hear the growl of the jazz bass. They also probably rolled off the top end a bit in the mix.Hi-fi bass sound wasn't popular yet! haha

  • I have no idea, but those strings do not sound like flats at all!

  • whaaaaaaaaa.... this. is. freakin'. nice. awesome. cool. go. on. =D

  • lee ritenour

  • Who is playing the guitar?

  • lee ritenour, this is actually his track that marcus miller is playing on, or so i believe

  • Yes but the man who aranged this record and played on bass guitar is Marcus Miller.

    Sorry about my English... :P

  • Isn't this a Lee Ritenour tune ??

  • Funniest song in the world for playing along with drums! :D

  • When I was dj, I always give the solo +6dB.

So that even simple brains catch the genius of this MMiller solo.

Today noone thinks stuff like that is dancable.

    ...oompz...oomps....oompz...oomps...

  • thriller mista millar.thabasswizzard

  • Original Rio Funk by Lee Ritenour is from 1979 (I'm not sure).

  • You're right. "Rio Funk" from the album "Rio"

  • yes this is the original by Lee Ritenour

  • euuugh. euuuuuuuugh, euuuugh, thats sick, I'm feeling the funk.

  • this song has the same sound of "mi fortaleza" from the jazz band "torre fuerte". can anyone tell me the year of this record?

  • Yeah "mi fortaleza" does sound like rio funk, because "torre fuerte ripped it off. I must say, that bass player for "torre fuerte",was laying it down. But as someone said, rio funk is from the late 70's early 80's.

  • i remember practicing this bass line when it came out years ago.i still play it today..thanks marcus..its rio funky

  • nice! i love Marcus
