Yup, we see and hear this great stuff every year at the North sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam. I have to save for it but after the festival I feel like a million dollar man.
@musashi20emon I believe 8, 9 and 10 th of July 2012...North Sea Jazz festival Rotterdam. Buy a weekend ticket and you have one of the best musical weekend ever. Always looking forward to the days they present the playing artists..I ll be there!
@appiahao Well, that's if it he even WANTS to. This man right here can definitely play with anyone in this world. Its just a matter of whether or not he wants to :D
me and my band are going to try and play this but I can't find a good guitar or piano sheet music. Someone kind enough to point me out where I could get these? Thanks!
You left off of the list the innovator of the "slapping/ thumbing" technique that about all of the bass players that you have on your list incorporates, and that is none other than Mr. Larry Graham
Marcus is a great bass player. Abe is a great bass player. Lee is a great guitarist. Abe can play whatever note enters his mind. Why split atoms? It's great music. Just leave it at that and enjoy!
I've heard him live a long time ago. It was a improvised question-answer solo with Al Jarreau. If you think so, I decide to think, it wasn't Abe's day. Al need to decend to very easy melodys, to get Abe to follow him.
@RFDlic lol... haven't heard "semiquaver" in a while... lol... I remember when I was living in Australia they were using "quavers, crotchets" and whatnot... Just say "quarter notes, half notes" etc. if you wanna be understood in the rest of the world...lol Where are you from by the way?
OK. Yea, I think those "quavers" are maybe only used in England and Australia... I don't know. It's just safer to say 16ths, because there's 100% chance you'll be understood. When you say "quaver" maybe like 1 in 20 will know what you are talkin about...lol
@AleGorymusic It's only Americans that really use "eighth note" and "sixteenth note". The correct musical terms for these are "quaver" and "semiquaver". Any musician should understand what you are talking about when you use these terms...
@Loleczeqlolowaty You are correct sir. This IS Marcus Miller. I'm a bass player and BIG Marcus fan. That's him. Maybe slightly before the preamp was added to his bass. Very indicative of his early career. Find the Youtube video of him with GRP all-stars
Yes, this is MM. noinwe, among others, have said everything to be said on that. But your query, your challenge, was legit and perfectly acceptable discourse; you weren't rude or churlish. I can't imagine why anyone would give you a thumbs down.
That is definetly Marcus on bass. he actually wrote & produce this track for Ritenour. This was back in the early 80's, before marcus established his signiture sound.
Ok, you win. Thanks for the update. I have this recording somewhere in my collection from way back when. But you got to admit it dosent sound like Marcus.
You are correct, this tone is definetly not the Marcus tone we have all grown to love. But his tone has evolved over the yrs. He hooked up with Roger Sadowsky & the rest is history. But not much was added just a Bartolini preamp & a baddass bridge. Now ,it doesn't sound like Marcus tone, but the style is definetly Marcus. Man, Marcus was probably in his early 20's when this song was recorded. He has learned a hell of alot since then.
It's Marcus Miller. On this CD version Marcus Miller plays the bass. I happen to also have three transcription books (two are Japanese) and every version lists Marcus MIiler on bass. Plus, come on, this sounds more like Marcus than Abe!
Sounds like Marcus to me. Yep I have this album as well...it was originally my Grandfather's album and I inherited it. Lists Marcus on the liner notes.
Sorry, but this iS Lee Ritenour, Abraham Laboriel on bass and Carlos Vega on Drums++. I have the cd and DVD recorded "live" in studio with all the above pluss Larry Williams, Dave and Don Grusin++ . I have also seen them several times since the 80`s. Thers no doubt Abraham is playing bass on this tune.Sinc.Morten
Well, you are right when you are referring to the live recording (e.g. GRP Live in Session, I own this one, too). But I was referring to the original (studio) recording ("Rio", GRP, released in 1979), where Marcus Miller is playing the bass of the tune "Rio Funk").
Don't think Marcus was using flats on this recording...strings were probably just broken in a bit.You can still hear the growl of the jazz bass. They also probably rolled off the top end a bit in the mix.Hi-fi bass sound wasn't popular yet! haha
