If you traveled back 4 mil years to some Ethiopian hillside and gave our Australopithecine ancestors electric guitars, Marshall amps and of course a generator to power everything, this is the kind of music they would make. That stunning image of evil genius Iggy Pop standing on their hands near the end is right up there with Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey.
Yeah, who gives a sh!t if they were "punk" or not? The only thing that matters is the fact that if it hadn't have been for them, and the likes of the NY Dolls, Velvet Underground, MC5, etc., punk would have never happened.
from detroit , the stooges were the stooges doing what they did .live recorded studio albums amps on 10, the labels came after. for everyone not the stooges. if i had only 3 songs to listen to the rest of my life no fun would be one of them, what other band plays a song twice in the same show? IGGY! r.i.p ron
Houston, we have Iggy. "Well ALRIGht!!"... "Iggy is somewhere, I don't know where, but we'll find him"....."OHHAAAALLLRIght!!"......"Oh, There he is...!IGGY!...."....."Said...ALright,Baby.
...And there are people in there enjoying it and a couple of folk are actually lapping up Iggy diving in the crowd and some are even moving about with fists in the air. They were so weird for the time though that no-one knew how to react, would any of us?
Long live The Stooges, THEIR sound and anyone ever influenced by them.
All Stooges shows received negative, unsure or confused responses. People just did not know what to do, everyone claims punk (NY/UK76) took everyone by surprise all those years late, so imagine this?
The Stooges were 'No Elvis, Beatles or The Rolling Stones' whilst those bands were actually around, They were realistic in a time where everyone was all Peace and Love... they were just on about boredom and being a misfit growing up and hating life. They were fucking revolutionary beyond anyone else
That’s it right there. This video is the proof that it actually happened. There were people that understood what this is all about. Hendrix, Iggy, Black Flag, The Gits, the list goes on…The Jesus fucking Lizard.... Nowadays all we got is indie fags or ‘brootal’ nerds working on Pro Tools, looking for perfection as if it’s something numeric. Thank god there’s still Oxbow out there.
@insightdisorder Right. Pogoing wasn't invented until over ten years later. This crowd may actually be interested in what they're hearing, they just have no idea how to.
@questionmarkjones I remember back in the day Iggy would sometimes describe the Stooges as a jazz band. I used to think he was kidding, but if you listen closely to the second album you can really understand it. Free jazz, experimental jazz, whatever you want to call it. Same with the Electric Eels [early and mid 1970s, from Cleveland, Ohio].
@mircea1910 the stooges weren't fully punk but they were considered an early predecessor to it so the ramones are considered the first proper punk band
@TheDirks1 they didnt have the punk ethos - they only inspired sex pistols, clash etc because they played loud, fast and short songs in contrast to the bloated prog rock music/ zepplin inspired excess at the time. Punk rock is about revolution and fighting against the order, the ramones were just like the beach boys but obvs louder, faster etc
The announcer is the only one having fun in the audience. These hippies are the lamest shits I've ever seen. Thank God the hippy days are gone. I'll stick with punk and metal...
I don't know why everyone's complaining about the announcer. I think his nonchalant commentary on the insanity happening on stage and in the crowd is hilarious!
@cellojordan: Proving that even guys on American TV in their 60s AT the end of the 60s could have a (TV) eye for coming phenomenons.....

It's still hard to believe that they actually tried recording this live, I mean, didn't they know anything about the Stooges? That at any moment Iggy could whip his dick out?
I saw the Stooges twice. First time they played the entire Funhouse album. The second time they did the Raw Power album. Those two shows practically destroyed my hearing, but it was worth it. Best live shows I've ever seen, bar none.
@BluntObject1234 Not so much the death of the hippies - this kinda stuff was around before them....more the death of the American dream...The Hippies just started listening to this. I agree tho they do still fag the place up!! Have a goodun'!
@ClausWeiergang Salt Spring Island Canada. Look up "Palu Rainbow song" oh god. Hippies call themselves revolutionaries but their sensitive fucks. Nature people are even worse. Duh lets spend 100 dollars on hemp diapers for Yes "Indigo" children do exist and no they are not here to save the world and make our hearts bleed out rainbows while a unicorn fucks us in the ass. "Indigos" are in fact....well Iggy Pop. They have heart of warriors not dumb asses.
@kafrrros Don't be dumbfounded when I say this, but I have a band that is all about this stuff( besides the peanut butter). We were raised on good shit like this and other bands it is just that they never air or talk about this music anymore. It is all about electronic music and a ton of B.S..
