unfortunately, poor people in other parts of the world have to eat whatever they can raise to survive. not everyone has a supermarket where meats are giftwraped. guinea pigs don't take up much space and they don't eat much. so in a sense they are a very practical source of protein.
Origginaly Guinea Pig was not a pet, i was a peruvian food , i can say it´s a nutritive food, until now peruvians eat it, im peruvian i must admit i eat it, but common its our culture , in the case of China about eating dogs and alive animals, that´s really weird :S

I wish to hell that people would get over the stigma and eat unwanted pets in this country. Specifically cats and dogs. And I'm vegan here. Used to work with and keep at home many large reptiles, had a six foot monitor that ate a neighbor's cat by accident. Thing is, the damned crazy cat lover lobby would crucify people for it, all the while they eat beef, pork, chicken etc. Hypocrites. So many damned unwanted cats here, and you can't even feed them to a snake without risking jail. What crap.

Wow, people are oversensitive. This is an area where guinea pigs are abundant and are a common food - EXACTLY like how we eat cow, pig and chicken in North America. @scarlet2589 Wow, okay, first of all, no animal was "made" to be eaten, humans developed to eat any animal that they could get. In Western cultures cows and chickens were the animals you could eat. However it's extremely racist and closed-minded to think that these animals are "meant" to be eaten. Guinea pigs are not pets to the people in South America, just as chickens aren't pets to us. And being 12 doesn't make your argument more persuasive, nor does terrible grammar.

@scarlet2589 Actually to people like Jesus, pigs were thought to be "unclean" and should not be eaten. Other cultures during this time ate different types of animals. Just because people living in the Middle East thousands of years ago ate these animals doesn't mean they're the only ones people can eat. Also, cannibalism as a source of sustenance is considered taboo in almost all cultures. You may not give "two shits" about grammar but if you want people to take you seriously, it's important.
