You NEVER want to use bleach on a hoof because it not only kills the infected, thrushy tissue, but also the HEALTHY tissue in the hoof that is needed to grow in place of the thrush. Instead, try some diluted Apple Cider Vinegar and water.. it's supposed to do the same thing and not fry your horse's hoof...
@catandminot Agreed. When I bought my horse he had thrush. We used Apple Cider Vinegar. I also used sore no more after which because I am paranoid. I didn't think the sore no more was that much but the ACV was very cheap.

We had a farrier out this past week-end (1st time we've used him) who said 3 of our horses had thrush. He pointed out the white of the horses sole that he was scraping off as the "thrush". All the videos I've watched on youtube have said thrush is the black mucky yucky stuff in the frog area. Apparently I'm getting some misinformation and would LOVE to know more about the "white" scrapings of the sole. Our former master farrier never mentioned a thing to us about the white scrapings.
BEWARE !!!! anyone thinking of attending the RED TOMLINSON school of horseshoeing, DON'T DO IT. RED IS A THIEF! He hides behind PO boxes, emails and cell phones so you can't track him down once you give a deposit. I learned an$1800. lesson. Shame on me for trusting. BUT STAY AWAY FROM THIS THIEF.
As alumni of oklahoma Horseshoeing School (one of the elite and storied programs in the world) I endorse this video and technique. Well done. This is by the book. Butler endorses this as the only application a farrier should offer a customer. Pay attention gaipers. This is Truth.
Dilluted bleach applied in such a manner will NOT kill a frog and rarely damage it. Concentrated bleach, will burn live tissue or horn thats trimmed or worn close. It can also atrophy and shrink horn such as a frog, if the material is subject to CONCENTRATED bleach soakings. After working in the temperate rain forest for the last few decades and seeing the integrity of hooves absolutely destroyed by excessive moisture i cannot endorse SOAKING feet in any subtsance: salts, vinegar, whatever
Bleach destroys live tissue. Though I still use it occasionally, it is not good to use. White Lightening, huuf magic, lysol, apple cider vinegar are other ways but my hoof mentor with 60 plus years, plus oregon school of hoof trimming told me bleach kills/harms hurts frog. And people alos don't realize they should do preventive soaks, too. thrush is very serious
This horse has plenty of horn in an apparently moist environment i see no problems treating it with diluted bleach. If the necrotic, diseased material does not completely trim out i use something other than bleach because after agressive debridement, it comes close to invading infantile horn or live tissue. I will then use a topical treatment along the lines of fungal/antispetic. About the only thing i have not used short of battery acid, is 300% Oil of Oregano. Very potent and very expensive
My horses feet is not a toilet so why would I a caustic chemical like bleach on it. When you put bleach on, it can burn the living healthy tissue in the rest of the hoof.
I wouldn't put it on my own skin or wounds, so I certainly wouldnt put it on my horses open wounds
I use Virkon S, it is much Gentler, isn't caustic or burn and is a broad spectrum antiviral antifungal, so stops any secondary infection as well. Not sure if it is avail in the USA.
Read P-3 by butler. It is the farriers Bible. A horse stands in shit and mud. The horny structures of a foot are resiliant and its not skin. I bet you paint your nails. ThATS THE WAY GOD MADE EM' Hope you can always afford to waste your money ON GIMMICKS. think before you post long term comments over things you don't know much about. BTW Virkon is just a compounded Copper Sulphate. Its diluted. Just buy Copper sulphate, terpintine and pine tar. Thats what a good vet would do.
I could go on tearing you a new ass but there is no living tissue on a hoof dumbass. You should sell your horse cause you don't know shit. Thought I might help you out. Don't respond with your lack of whit. If I throw a dog a bone I don't ask if it tastes good.
Do you have to make the mixture fresh every day? When I worked in child care we used bleach water to clean, but we had to make it every day because when mixed like this it loses its antibacterial properties in 24 hours or so.
I tried that on my horse but his thrush got worse. So I called the farrier out and she put his foot in a water, iodine and epsom salt mixture and it cleared almost all of it up in 3 days! Bleach has always been our way with thrush but now im sticking to this new method! thanks for this video its very imformative!
Looks to me like that horse has an umbilical hernia not a dirty sheath like one comment suggests.

Might want to clean his sheath while your at it.

I don't use dilluted bleach. I use it straight and if theres a hole, I use a cl;ean cotton ball to hold off from more dirt enterng.

If anyone has any evidence, research or proof that dilute bleach will harm the hoof, I would love to see it.
chexmygold 2 years ago
Don't pussy foot around.
I use full strength bleach.
This also helps harden up a freshly timed sole to go barefoot.
Bleach goes neutral after a short while.
it's safe.
Hydrogen peroxide is a cheap thrush buster too. Watch that stuff go to work.
That frog could be trimed up a bit too.
Overgrowth with trap and promote thrush.
If no one agree's it's because they are inexperienced cemical fear mongers full of neglect denial and anxiety.........ha

Or if it doesnt work maybe get something a little bit stronger, as the bleach had to be very diluted in that much water.
