Congress originally supported the contras, then changed their mind, then after all this, they again supported them. What North saw was the inconsistencies, and the impact on the contras. So he tried to help them during the brain fart happening in our congress.

He swore an oath to support and defend the consitution. Providing support to the contras was against the law. A group of individuals within the executive and CIA deliberately pursued their own secret and unaccountable foreign policy, breaking the law and lying to congress.

If breaking your oath of office / enlistment, and acting illegally makes someone a hero in your eyes, you have a very odd sense of honour and propriety.
