Dale Earnhart Snr is still missed even by Australians who watch nascar. The man was, still is, and ALWAYS will be, a motor racing ledgend. R.I.P Dale Earnhart Snr.
@realcrazystuntmen The video is deceiving. He hit the wall at 160mph with the 2nd car pinned on his right. The nose of the car slid down the outside wall and did not bounce off the wall which made the impact appear to be less violent. There are still pictures which show the rear window and right rear tire bursting away from the call at the moment of impact.
Since open wheel is so much harder than explains why the numerous drivers who have gone from the "much harder to drive cars" to Nascar have sucked dick and half have left...right??????
MicFri123- not wearing the 5 point harness seatbel - impossible - what caused his death was not wearing a Haans device - stabilizes your neck & helmet with a brace that goes over your shoulders - he broke his neck without it.
it's funny how at just the right angle it could do so much damage like that. i'll never forget this day. my granddaddy was one of the biggest earnhardt fans i've ever met and he was at the race but left early for some reason, i honestly am happy that he wasn't there though.. rest in peace #3 and my granddaddy [hope y'all are racin together up in heaven <3]
I renenber watching this live. Immediately after the crash they had in-cear video of hitting the wall. I never saw it again. Is it out there somewhere?
I remember watching this thing with my sister while eating cereal that afternoon because we weren't so entertained by wrestling. What a fateful viewing choice we made that day...
i still dont understand how such a relatively inocculous looking accident had such a tragic ending. i know he wasnt wearing a hans device & he was wearing an open face helmet but it just doesnt make sense when compared to some accidents on you-tube.
being a brit i'm not a big fan of nascar however like all race fans i was shocked by his death.
He had a pretty good run at the wall and pivoted into a more direct angle just before impact. His closing speed to the wall was about 50mph. The car has a very stiff frame, unlike a passenger car. Also unlike a passenger car the safety belts afe very stiff and do not "give" on impact. The weight of head and helmet travel led forward and snapped to a stop, like cracking a whip. It basically pulled his spine and lower plate of his skull out of his head. A Very quick way to go.
It's sad. Sometimes we can see big crashes, cars flipping , or being totally destroyed. Dale's accident didn't seem so bad, and finally he's gone. RIP
Thing is you guys go on about hans, certain crashes, like if it was on open seater motorsport like F1, and your car flipped upside down so ur head was scraping along the ground, you'd probably get decapitated thanks to hans
thats why theres high points in single seater cars. without hans a single seater driver still isn't going to be able to safely 'duck' there head under the dashboard
Strange thing is , he was giving out about the Hans device, I saw a documentary about it and his death was largely responsible for it becoming mandatory
took it off while he was driving 190+? right.......he was blocking for his son and waltrip i believe it was..... he came down and was spun....... Rest his soul, but thats just one of the hazards of racing. like someone mentioned, it was the fact that he refused to wear the HANS device.....and a sudden stop from 190 will kill anyone.....
it looked as if it was a non-fatal crash; seen this clips in various compilations in youtube before, but never knew that it was a fatal one. RIP to the guy.
the "relatively" straight forward accident was actually Earnhardt hitting the wall head on at 180 miles an hour (290 km per hour). his head jerked forward with so much force that he basically snapped his neck.
Dale though, refused to wear a HANS device, referring to it as a "damn noose" if only he had listened to the medical scientists... still at least he achieved his life ambition and won the Daytona 500

I love all kinds of racing, and am British, but, i still cannot understand how on earth Dale was killed by such a -relatively-, straight forward accident, it wasnt as if the impact angles were particularly bad!
I you want to call yourself a racing driver, go prove it on road circuits.
Yes it is harder!
You have to brake hard...control traction out of slow corners, know the limit og the car in every corner, and oh yes...maybe even turn right from time to time!
Excuse me... but you don't know how fast they are going... every turn risks there lives... do you know how much force is on there bodies when they are going over 100? Do you know how hard it is to handle a car going at those speeds? I don't think so. So hop on your go-cart and think about it while you go 15 mph!
@Micfri123 I know! I have heard that some drivers leave their cars to others drivers when they come to real racing circuits, not ovals!
If this is true it might be the saddest thing Ive heard, related to racing!
But wellIf you enjoy it so much then fine by me!
Personally I will never get it!
It seems like its more a cultural statement than racingholding on the old American muscle car philosophy with low-tech but high powered cars that handles like a bathtub on wheels?!
For those that dont know, the first wreck in the clip is not a fatal wreck even though it looks bad. The second wreck with the #3 sliding up and hitting the wall nose first was fatal to the driver Dale Earnhardt. Its hard to believe when you watch it but its true. He wore an old school open face helmet with no neck support. Full-face helmets and neck support is now required for all NASCAR drivers.
Okay, transbamm, if you will look in the video the number two car hits him, granted he was already losing control, still, you cant say "at no point, something didnt hit his car" f-in retard
I cried for weeks while watching races after that...Especially when Everyone in the crowds held up 3 fingers on the 3rd lap of every race of that year
let's think about it this way. earnhardt looked like he was going at 100 mph, maybe more, maybe less. the hans device wasn't fitted properly or sometin. if we were to hit a wall at 100 mph head-on we would die. obviously that's what's happened...
that accident doesn't even look very serious compared to some others I've seen where the car flips over a dozen times and the driver gets out and walks away.
Dale's accident looks very routine and boring. But he died. Go figure.
of course dick cheney was the ceo of the company that makes right side tyres so they developed a sport that involves only turning left. turning right is the devils work. you're either with us or against us. sadam has a car that turns right. get him! colon powell is up for the next "voice of darth vader" and american money is worth nothing. love the 'sport' though. can't play football without ma pads!
I think they were all surprised by that unexpected curve in the track. really threw them off. nascar is such a dynamic and unpredictable sport....not!!!!
I read the final report over and over..Dale incorrectly installed his safety harness (wrapped around roll cage)and had for years..on impact it streached to the point of the clasp releasing tension allowing the belt on left side to go slack allowing his head to strike the steering wheel breaking his neck and killing him instantly..a HANS Device would have saved him...a full face helmet would have saved him...but he WAS DALE-BY GAWD-EARNHARDT...his own Hubrious killed him..
Incredible how dangerous those cars are! He just hit the wall and died from that. But the other one who rolled and rolled, stayed alive. Ironic frightening game
you know with all my respect to friends and family of mr dale, he lose control of the car for the reason of nothing, is a very strange situation maybe he was in some kind of pain like a heart atack or something, anyway rest in peace.
I remember seeing an interview a couple of weeks before the accident where he was going on about how he never snapped his "brain stem" as he called it, couple of weeks later hes dead after he snapped his brain stem. how ironic
Yah, I was going to say I'm not a race car fan at all. This crash didn't look bad at all and I wondered about this. So he didn't wear his HANS device. Well I guess that's his mistake that he'll have to take to heaven with him them. This crash didn't look bad though, I kinda wonder about this.
because Dale refused to wear a HANS device. the device was trying to be fased in because it prevented exactly what happened to him, basal skull fractures...
...he was going close to 200mph. when he hit the wall almost head on, he went from 200mph to 0mph in an instant, and his spinal column/cord detached itself from the bottom of his skull (basal skull fracture). it's just one of those freak accidents that happened. strange thing is, before the race, his family was urging him to wear one, and he didn't want to cause he was too set in his ways and it was uncomfortable to him. sad, another life gone.
I agree, it didn't look that bad really. I've seen races where the drover walks away after flipping the car 300 times, the car explodes, driver is on fire, people shoot at him, ninja attack him, he's listing to Celine Dion, a tree falls on him, he gets hit by 12 other cars, a speeding piano blindsides him out of nowhere, he gets cancer, commits suicide, drives through a wall of tires and STILL walked away. I guess he WAS going really fast when he hit the all though.
It does not "look" like a terrible accident as far as professional racing goes but remember at that speed with the weight of a car and a cement wall vs. the human body, The right angle of impact. It can happen. If you were up close you would see it is much more devistating than on camera from a distance.
I was thinking the same thing, man. I bet he's been in far worse looking accidents himself. But you never know...when your numbers up, I guess it's up.
There should be a rule that you must possess at least the equivelant of an eighth grade education before being allowed to post comments on any subject matter portrayed on "You tube". Please , if you know nothing of the topic, spare us all your opinions. Go get ready for the prom.
Your are really not too clever. Take a look at what the F1 drivers survive compared to this crash...Yes it is minor. 200 miles my ass, yes...If he'd hit the wall straight on a 90 degree angle....Look more like he skippped off the wall.....
Stupid waste of life becuz of poor safety measures.
minor? he hit the wall dead-on at 150 miles per hour.
and yes, it looks like he skipped the wall... because if you're going 150 miles per hour in one direction and hit the wall at any angle, you're still going to go in that direction you idiot, especially with another car pushing you along.
when you're going on a left hand turn at that speed and someone clips your left rear quarter panel, your car goes down the track... until you get to the bottom, and then it slingshots you toward the outside wall.
There is one camera angle that they showed that day but havent since. It showed a better angle and the car hit harder than any other camera angle. Also, that day Dale wasnt wearing two of his honse device straps to keep his head stright up and down. Not snap forward like it did that day.
poor guy. just doing what he loved to do.

...he was going close to 200mph. when he hit the wall almost head on, he went from 200mph to 0mph in an instant, and his spinal column/cord detached itself from the bottom of his skull (basal skull fracture). it's just one of those freak accidents that happened. strange thing is, before the race, his family was urging him to wear one, and he didn't want to cause he was too set in his ways and it was uncomfortable to him. sad, another life gone.

Dale didnt die in this wreck liar!!!! No oe died!!!
nascarboy07 4 years ago
I agree, it didn't look that bad really. I've seen races where the drover walks away after flipping the car 300 times, the car explodes, driver is on fire, people shoot at him, ninja attack him, he's listing to Celine Dion, a tree falls on him, he gets hit by 12 other cars, a speeding piano blindsides him out of nowhere, he gets cancer, commits suicide, drives through a wall of tires and STILL walked away. I guess he WAS going really fast when he hit the all though.
juggler007 4 years ago
Lol. What killed him was he wasn't wearing his neck brace because he said it was choking him before the race. How sad.

lol celine deion?

it because the car didnt gradually slow if it did slow gradually he would still be alive

It does not "look" like a terrible accident as far as professional racing goes but remember at that speed with the weight of a car and a cement wall vs. the human body, The right angle of impact. It can happen. If you were up close you would see it is much more devistating than on camera from a distance.
ianbillen 4 years ago
that was all dale's fault he crashed he tryed to block 30 some race cars but still
RIP

Thats bullshit. Ive seen people walk away from flipping a car 20+ times and Earnheart dies like that. Why
6650roger 4 years ago
i heard a the thing around his neck broke but he kept racing knowing it was broken.
italianoheat 4 years ago

jumperdude8108 4 years ago
I was thinking the same thing, man. I bet he's been in far worse looking accidents himself. But you never know...when your numbers up, I guess it's up.

R.I.P
which one was he? the one that rolled?
mybizuk 4 years ago
he was number 3. they zoomed in on him at the end
jumperdude8108 4 years ago
not to belittle the death in any way, but it didnt seem like a massive crash. What actually killed him? broken neck or something?
turkeylips17 4 years ago
He was killed by the debrise of the impact. Poor guy
XFILE7 4 years ago
no he wasn't, his skull separated from his spine from the impact. read the facts before you state something so ignorant.

Stupid waste of life becuz of poor safety measures.
naughttube 4 years ago
minor? he hit the wall dead-on at 150 miles per hour.
and yes, it looks like he skipped the wall... because if you're going 150 miles per hour in one direction and hit the wall at any angle, you're still going to go in that direction you idiot, especially with another car pushing you along.
PooPoo2U 4 years ago
when you're going on a left hand turn at that speed and someone clips your left rear quarter panel, your car goes down the track... until you get to the bottom, and then it slingshots you toward the outside wall.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
A guy in a F1 car would have survived that easily....
Nuff said...

There is one camera angle that they showed that day but havent since. It showed a better angle and the car hit harder than any other camera angle. Also, that day Dale wasnt wearing two of his honse device straps to keep his head stright up and down. Not snap forward like it did that day.

Weak cars. No one should lose a life from a relativly minor accident like that.
naughttube 4 years ago
Omfg...just hit the wall and die, so unsafe, thats stupid that they had not better security in thoes cars.
babygu 4 years ago
NOT BETTER SECURITY???
