The C-5's gear is what the Russian's never had. They go through tires all the time. The C-5 had caster gears so the rear gears would turn freely when taxing the jet. Back in the day that was like the only classified part of the C-5 or so the old men at flight safety would tell us.
I love reading these little arguements about size lol Simple fact is AN225 is largest plane on gods living earth & there will never be anything else. Simple reason being, there are no requirements for any bigger then the 225!! The one thing that the 225 is flawed with is the lack of rear doors. So it isn't a roll on - roll off aircraft but never the less it is still the largest in the world. A lot of US & UK logistics in Iraq & Afghanistan are being delivered by Antonov's.
My father was the first person on McChord AFB to be trained for maintenance, he went TDY to Travis AFB for it. He came back and instituted the McChord program. MSGT Charles Overturf. On Ft Lewis they have a training mock-up of the body for training. Boeing was so sure of the contract they had it built there and until recently it displayed the insignia BOEING C-5A. A few years ago they riveted aluminum skin over that...
this aircraft came out in 66 and has had several up grades since then thats why you see so many of the older ones in the bone yard at davis monthan, plus the C-17 has picked up a big part of the work load with the retirement of the c-141 @ :016
Beautiful plane this is, used to love watching it land n take off here in aus with the Starlifter, cos i used to live at the end of a runway, it was amazing, could throw a rock n hit the underbelly of the plane lol.
i was on my way to flag football practice and i never heard it and then all the sudden i see this huge plane flying over my house and it looked so low because its huge
I walked through one. I went to the Dayton air show like 20 years ago and there was one we could walk through. There's a ladder up to the cockpit because it is way way up. Pretty amazing plane but they are going with a new jet cargo plane now.
