I remember watching this when it aired on PBS in 1980. I also had the fortune of seeing him play this live at the Hollywood Bowl about a couple of years before this telecast (when he rerecorded this with Mehta and NYPO for CBS). That evening concert featured Eugene Ormandy and the LAPO. Of course, Stern's earlier CBS account with Ormandy and his Philadelphians, from 1959, reigns supreme over all others!
If I have a violin. And you have a violin. And I have a bow, there it is, that's a bow. Are you watching? And my bow reaches acrooooooooss the room, and starts to play your violin, I PLAY YOUR VIOLIN!!! I PLAY IT UP!!!
not to be mean, but he doesn't have enough tone out of his violin. Some parts of the concerto is out of tune, but just some parts though, not a lot. but nice job Isaac.
Isaac Stern; what can you really say about him? He was one of the greats. His music will live on forever. I just love his intensity; he really knew his repertoire and he really knew his del Gesu. It's the perfect instrument to use for this violin concerto because it just breaks out the fire in the piece, combined with Stern's undoubted technique and skill. I can only dream of playing as well as he did. Long Live Isaac Stern.
I love Sarah Chang, but I really don't think that we can compare the two of them. As Itzhak Perlman and Hilary Hahn did say; violinists like Isaac Stern came from a different time, and when Yehudi Menuhin died in 1999 and Stern in 2001, it really was an end of a generation of violinists. Different styles and techniques. It's impractical to compare Chang and Stern. A more reasonable would be Perlman and Chang or someone within that time frame. Don't get me wrong though, I love Sarah Chang.
A true master @ work.

I think in the end, it's not about technique anymore, it's about artistic expression and emotion, and Isaac Stern is quite a genius at that. <3

I agree. Have you ever heard Istomin-Stern-Rose playing the Archduke Trio? Unmatched.

Unfortunately I have not, but I will certainly look into that. Thank you.

I like the third movement of this music and purchase his CD and listen well. His performance is impressed very fantastically.
