The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, WY, just received its first bird, a great horned-owl, for our new program to educate the public about raptors and vultures. When, as a volunteer, I went over to our mews to feed him, as the gal in charge of the program was out of town, picking up two more birds, I had my first experience with gular fluttering. Before I joined the volunteer team, I had never even heard of it. Nice that you have captured this on film to share with bird lovers.
@Jah2070 Owls can control the size of their pupils, and they can adjust the size WAAAAY faster than humans. Plus they work independently so they can have pupils of two different sizes at the same time.
@cerbosu Alice's left wing is permanently injured. It was severely dislocated when she fell out of her nest as a chick, and she also broke the end of her humerus. So her elbow is permanently messed up and she can't fly.
@basoco1 The baby owl you found needs to get to a wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible. Young owls always leave the nest before they can fly, and at this stage their head and body are fuzzy, but their wing feathers are fully grown. Owls at this stage normally don't need any help, as Mom and Dad are usually hiding nearby. If it's overrun with lice or other parasites, it needs help.
She's so lucky to have you guys to care for her like that. Funny to see them panting. One of our cockatiels had to have that done regularly when he got older. It started needing it after he was in his 20s. He used to pant like that afterwords too. It was intimidating to do on my tiel, I can't imagine doing it for such a large bird.
@BLW2008 In captivity Alice's beak isn't exposed to the wet and dry, hot and cold, rough surfaces, and as much tearing of prey as in the wild, so it gets overgrown in captivity when it wouldn't normally in the wild. Thus the need to trim it every so often.
@dethmaul Yes, they are just tufts of feathers, but their position is an indicator of mood in combination with how she holds the rest of the feathers on her body.
@ld0ne Beaks grow continuously just like our fingernails. In captivity they don't get as much wear as they would in the wild, so they need to be trimmed.
Ah man I want to give her a juice box!

Why is her beak filed down? They don't do that naturally do they? Is it for your protection?

Just like rodent teeth.
Her horn feathers are laying down? I thought they were just tufts, I didn't know they had directional control, like dog ears.
