  • jimmy webb master of his craft, great download jim's song with the voice of james taylor . just perfect.

  • This is a lovely version of an even lovelier song. Hell, it spurred me to record my own version and video respond. Musically, the song structure is gorgeous and the lyrics downright perfection. Nobody will ever touch Glen's version, but even if you just wrote these lyrics on a chalk board you could make a room fall silent for a bit...and it would be tragic to erase them.

  • @CJandthebreakfast God forbid you should upload the travesty.

  • @GoldZahava Thanks for the education on the allegorical nature of these trees. I kinda feel dumb that I didn't know the word belay, my dang dictionary is broken. By the way, I've already uploaded my own version, long ago. Good grief, get hooked on phonics and learn to read maybe?

Jeez, sorry this is outta hand. Relax, any decent artist understands some criticism and trust me I was just being facetious with my original comments. I find this song, this version & this vid, lovely.

  • @CJandthebreakfast: The song is rife with simile, metaphor and allegory. The lyrics are the utmost in romanticism. As for my ability to read, look up The Prometheus Society. I am a member de facto. Phonics are for lazy people who cannot master the King's English. Enough said.

  • @GoldZahava Dude, you really seem like a jerk. How would the King better say "asshat?"

By the way, the uploader of this video has long ago visited my versions page and commented. He seemed not upset at all at my original comments and even made a joke of his own in similar nature. So, again, relax, listen to this sweet song and just...relax.

  • @CJandthebreakfast :You seem to be the one egging Gold on. Let it go. The King would say that Balaam's ass was smarter than you. just let it go. Your ego is showing.

  • @GlorifyHim888 Jeez. I'm not the one in the Prometheus Society...give me a break. :)

  • @CJandthebreakfast : Prometheus Society: People in the 99.998 percentile of intelligentsia. Look it up. Only one notch higher: Mega Society. Must have 172 IQ to be in it. Mensa only requires 131 IQ and is the bottom notch of the intelligence societies. Enough of this plebian discourse. You go Gold!

  • I am in a blessed place. Feeling memories that dont even belong to me.

  • I loved this song when I was a little girl....

  • Warren Beatty is the subject of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain".

  • Beautiful Song !

  • great song.

  • gave me goosebumps!!!!

  • James Taylor could sing the phone book and I'd buy the CD.

  • @truck4jack

    I agree to that!

  • @truck4jack : LOL, Sweet Baby James does this song true justice, the best of all.

  • oh what lovely trees

  • @pagalley.. I believe Warren Beatty was the subject of the song.

  • i love james version

  • I lovey this song...beautifull ♪♪

  • I love James Taylor. I feel my life when I listen to his songs

  • Was James the subject of Carly Simon's song, "You're so Vain"?

  • nice song james

  • excellent video...!

  • i love this version..the music is superb and JT voice is so nice.

  • Your video is wonderful, thanks it does this lovely song justice.

  • @kalifson "Billy Joel said, and it was at the Songwriter's Hall of Fame ceremony, that it was a song about an ordinary man thinking extraordinary thoughts. That brought tears to my eyes because he came closer than anyone to getting it." This is a quote from Jimmy Webb the writer of this song. Thanks for commenting:)!

  • @granako: I disagree with Billy. Ordinary men do not take this type of job. They have to rappel and belay all day, and must be athletic and courageous to play around with the force of electricity. Also, James Taylor is the only other artist besides Campbell who has done this song justice.

  • I can't believe that you all have no creative imagination.hmmm..rap taking over?

  • @CJandthebreakfast LOL!! ya think?!?!?!?!.

  • wait a sec....in this video they show a lineman trying to climb a tree? I live in the suburbs so maybe I am ignorant about this but do they run phone lies through trees >?

  • @inkey2 I don't have a clue why there is dude on a wire in this song. Maybe he's the lineman? Makes no sense to me, either.

  • @CJandthebreakfast yeah, that would really suck if lineman had to clomb 500 foot 300 year old redwood trees. Especially in a snow storm

  • @CJandthebreakfast: Not much of an artist are you? The meaning is as self-evident as the nose on your face!

  • @GlorifyHim888 LOL, more evident then your sense of humor I guess.

  • @CJandthebreakfast : What you wrote didn't sound like it was meant to be humorous at all, so I'll have to cast my vote with 888.

  • @GoldZahava Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely video, such imagery. I do fail to see what repelling in a redwood forest has to do with the song and I don't see how that's me not being "much of an artist." I almost think its failure to really understand the song and merely showing men on "lines" in a beautiful setting. Just my non-artistic opinion and apparently failed humor to some. Any Redwood forests in Kansas or Texas? ;)

  • @CJandthebreakfast RAPPEL means to ascend a vertical structure by rope. BELAY is the reverse procedure. Linemen rappel and belay, and the trees are allegorically representing telephone poles. Good grief, get a dictionary. These are common rock climbing and alpinist terms.

  • @CJandthebreakfast Quite the contrary, the maker of this video understood the song perfectly, and is also a visual artist of excellent caliber.

  • @inkey2 and that SURE ain't Kansas . . . . . .LOL

  • This song does not need references. The lyrics are just simple beauty. I love James Taylor haven't seen him live though. Thank you for posting. Please do take a look at Cassandra Wilson's version. I think she does a good job- just amazing!

  • saw him last year in n z with carol king brilliant .

  • JESUS

  • Who could not like this...I dont get it

  • This is one of my favourite songs of all time and personally I don't care whether Glen or JT sings it (though that's a bonus!) - it is a GREAT song in it's own right...err, Jimmy Webb - acquired taste sometimes...I have the original LP of 'A Tramp Shining' (Jimmy Webb & Richard Harris)...what a bizarre album that is, and the photos are hilarious! However MacArthur Park is one of my favourite songs ever...

...err just going to have to rescue that cake:o

  • beautiful, and those who condemn, are only envious

  • I miss the electronic noises in Campbell's version. This is alright, I guess.

  • Caught him in concert here in England recently.

He made a 20,000 seater auditorium feel as intimate as a little club.

    Superb.

  • Copy another man's work.....that's just great.

  • @BARRIEMOREBARLOW : Condemn Elvis, Streisand, Sinatra, and scores of others by your dumb yardstick.

  • @GlorifyHim888 LOL Also tons of people have sung james' songs. What a mixed up bunch.

  • Such soothing music...James Taylor and Witchita Lineman, perfect combination.

  • one of the better cover versions

  • Every time I hear this song, I am convinced anew of the sheer genius of Jimmy Webb. I live in Nashville and hope to shake his hand some day. I can think of only one other song that strikes me as so extraordinarily groundbreaking but also musically beautiful, and that is Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street."

Nice cover by James Taylor, but could you expect anything else?

  • @JimInNashville If you want you can email Jimmy Webb, I did. I mean it would be nice to shake his hand, but just google his name and you can find his contact info...

  • love this song thanks james

  • me gusta mucho esta piesa musical. Pero la instrumentacion que hace de esta cancion el maestro PETER NERO es grandiosa ojala que la pudieran subir . gracias

  • Jimmy Webb is one of the finest songwriters of our time, and his songs are divine to sing, if a bit difficult to play. I just learned it, I had no idea. Have never regretted it. Just amazing, singer and song.

  • This song is pure genius because no one ever wrote one like it before Jimmy Webb wrote it for Glen Campbell. It was somewhat of a sequel to "Phoenix" but it stood on its own as an individual idea and with very unusual chords and accents. Thank you, Jimmy Webb...James knew it too.

  • Enviromentalist are not crazy.. world cannot live without these trees!! Those are living creatures!!!

  • Slight artistic liberty applying tree ropes to this song about a telephone linesman. But the filming of these shots is awesome and it works nicely. Great work. Oh, and James can do no wrong.

  • やっぱスティングより好きだな

  • James Taylor seems more like a brother than a singer I have listened & cried to for over 30 years. He always seems to know just how I am feeling? I am sad to say that I have not seen him in concert yet but I will very soon. Dude, you are the only singer I know that could do this better than Glenn Campbell. Well done Bro, see you soon. ~sjhgm1~

  • @sjhgm1 .....Try if you can to get to one of his concerts ..i can personally assure you ...you will experience a show that you will never forget..and yeah ,your right ..he seems to know exactly how a lot of people have been feeling over the years through his music

  • I could cry this is so beautiful. I get a lump in my throat while i hear it.

  • When I was 19 I moved to Rome. I read in the paper that James Taylor was playing a small, intimate concert I was really excited couse I had no idea he was in Rome, however, I didnt have much money so I chose not to go.. I regret that to this day.

  • beautiful rendition and those redwoods take me to a different plane altogether. they are magical!

  • I just got the CD excellent. Someone needs to do a real video with this, about telephone linemen....

  • This Taylor rendition absolutely does justice to this extaordinary song. The musicians accompanying him add a nicely up-dated feel and they all perform perfectly.James is great and can't wait to see him live for first time.

  • I like Glen's version best, but James Taylor's version is beautiful.

I agree with bekindunlimited, got to see James Taylor at least once. it is quite an experience. He makes everyone feel welcome and it seems like he is playing in your living room.

  • Better than Glen Campbell.

  • i love the video and the song good job

  • What a beautiful video!!

  • Youtubers, please check out Alan Pasqua's version of this tune on piano. The vid is here on yt. It is SO beautiful, almost as wonderful as JT's.... Wichita Lineman really is a gorgeous song, but I never liked any of the older versions. :0)

  • I've never heard this song before. Will have to check out the original version of it but think James Taylor is a fantastic vocalist.

  • Glen Campbell owns this Jimmy Webb song and no one will ever do a better

    version than he.

I am also a James Taylor fan.

  • James Taylor has always been my favorite male artist and still is. This is a beautiful version of an old beloved song.

  • amazed at the photoes and are we cutting down those trees? Are we that nuts to keep destroying cause we can?Took so long to grow them and that wounder you just take away.Shame on that industry.

  • great tune.......amazing chanter

  • I agree James Taylor's has depth & feeling..

  • I find glen Campbells version ....a bit simple and bland....james Taylor has added feeling and depth.....but then I love james taylor...there is nobody better in my opinion...

  • Beautiful vid, still NOBODY does it like Glen...NOBODY! Nobody has EVER done a song that Glen has done first hit...NOBODY. Good try though.

  • wiki:The lyrics describe the loneliness that a telephone or electric power lineman feels while he works and his longing for an absent lover. The phrase "singing in the wire" indicates the interference of radio communication signals heard as a "whine" in the background during a telephone conversation.

  • Another suggestion "singing in the wire" derives from the experiences of telephone linemen who work in rural areas where some telephone lines still consist of old-style open steel wires attached to glass insulators on poles and crossarms . A breeze can make the lines whistle/whine,when a lineman is close to them, working up on a pole, the whine has a well-known ethereal quality;with multiple frequency harmonics. The eerie sound can sometimes approximate the singing of a child's or woman's voice.

  • Really enjoy JT's version of this wonderful song! Your selected video footage is the icing on the cake! Great expression and feeling! Thank you! : )

  • Quite impressed by this actually. Feared the worst. Not sure about the video, but JT does the song justice.

  • It is nice, but this belongs to Glen. It seems pushed in places, they should have pulled back in the production. The extra overdub of guitar blurs the basic beauty in places. Still nice.

  • Great video and song. Reminds me of all the big forests here in Oregon where I live. Thanks for the great post of this amazing man and his voice at work.

  • James Taylor, what a great version of this song. Love the video footage, spectacular.

  • @Hope2009pc Don't forget "You Got a Friend" by Carole King. James is a great songwriter, but he can recognized a great song by someone else too....

  • I think if you are going to do a video of the title of the song...At least have the respect to go to that part of the country to shoot the video....Not stupid California!

  • Gentlemen, this is a perfect match: a beautiful song and a beautiful singer.

  • @michealati2 I agree as it was written by Webb just for Glen Campbell. He does it even better today with more maturity.

  • Beautiful! Thank you!

  • LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH MOUNTAIN AIR...OR A PRAIRIE BREEZE-

  • Magnificent ... one of the most brilliant artists on the plant performing one of the finest compositions by one of the foremost composers ... don't even bother to criticize this.

  • The marriage of Webb and Taylor? OMG, simply magnificent. If you do not recognize the brilliance of this artist performing this composition, you may need to be removed from life support!

  • I never knew he did this song, beautiful , thanks for the share

  • I'm not sure what climbing trees has to do with a song about a guy who works for the power company in Wichita. Looking for a blown fuse ,"Searching' in the sun for another overload", should be the cue If you get ice on a poorly maintained power line it could snap from the weight "If it snows down south that stretch won't stand the strain". Especially IF you go on vacation.

Believe me when you're up high on a power pole and the wind blows real hard, I can hear you singing through the wires too.

  • @agf1219 I bet everyone loves your stories at dinner parties

  • This doesn't look much like Wichita.

  • @smujismuj And the reason for that is .... it isn't. But who cares, apart form the odd nerd. Called poetic licence mate. If it looks good and fits the bill, go with it.

  • The Wichita Lineman is NOT a telephone lineman. He works for the power company.

  • 14 people hate the phone company

  • @jferg7159 Only 14 in the whole wide world of the Internet? Wow.

  • My favorite song of all time performed by one of my favorite musicians.

  • I didn't think he sang through his nose until Hope2009pc mentioned it :-s

  • @Hope2009pc

Why would you make such a definitive statement without first educating yourself on the topic? Please, do some research and learn about the music of James Taylor. I think you'll be surprised at what you find.

  • This tree climbing looks like great fun but why was it used in conjunction with a song about a lineman? I've always loved the song and of course anything James Taylor sings is great!!!

  • Everyone should at least ONCE in their lives go to a James Taylor concert....This man has a way of making everything seem bearable in life ...you just have to listen........

  • @bekindunlimited I've been listening..... :)

  • @bekindunlimited i am going to see him for the 5th time in dublin next july.last time during the interval james stayed on stage signing autographs and never got a break just went straight back into the set when the band returned.there are a lot of others who have their head so far up their ass and should take a leaf from his book

  • @TheConorMc96 .....Totally agree ..I will be there on 12th July....this guy is fantastic

  • @bekindunlimited You got that rigtht !!!! but even more than once would be better

  • @bekindunlimited

Totally - I saw him last month in Cardiff, UK. What a lovely, witty, self-deprecating man; a brilliant musician who absolutely adores his fans. Took my non-JT un-fan husband with me and (although he didn't like the music that much), he was blown away by how talented and professional JT was - yippeee!

    Korrieification 1 second ago

  • @Korrieification So glad you enjoyed the Cardiff show ...We saw him in Dublin on 12th July ..he was simply superb ..we had a great night ,he signed my 12 yr old daughters wrist J.T. and she had a photo taken with him at the interval....they were dancing in the aisles at the end of the show...That voice of his just seems to never change ,its amazing after such a long career....5000 fans went home very happy ...he is a true true legend ...they simply dont make them like James Taylor anymore

  • Glad to see the forest for I never would of if not for your films.I wouldn,t hear the songs eather. This is why we work that maybe someday we can aford to go see it.Thank you.

  • awsome.

  • Hope2009pc-You're showing your ignorance. That is why this album is titled "Covers." Ever hear of "Fire and Rain," "Country Road," "Don''t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," "You Can Close Your Eyes, " "Steamroller," "Walking Man," "Mexico," "Your Smilin' Face," "Lighthouse," "Millworker," "Secret O' Life," "Her Town Too," "Shower The People," "Copperline," "Shed A Little Light," "Something In The Way She Moves," "Sweet Baby James," "Blossom," "Sunny Skies," "Summer's Here," "Line'Em Up,"16StudioAlbums

  • @Donniemona I wasnt talking about one album. i was talking about his career. He sings thru his nose.

  • JT really screwed this one up royally.

  • @infinera06 Explain.

  • beautiful video.. thanks for posting!

  • Powerful words! I need you more than want you and I want you for all time. SO beautiful!! If a man said that to me, Oh boy!!

  • @truluvwaited Seriously powerful! Probably one of the best song lines I've ever heard!

  • @truluvwaited me too!

  • James was never creative enough to come up with any substantial amount of original material.

  • @Hope2009pc That is an unbelieveable statement

  • @Hope2009pc He is a cover artist. Look at the songwriting credits on his songs..

  • @Hope2009pc the REASON that this recording is SO unique is that James does ONLY his own material and has done so for 35 years. He is strictly a singer songwriter.

  • @jessthehorse What about "Handyman"... "Up on the Roof"..."Mockingbird"..."Everyday".

  • @Hope2009pc Yes, James Taylor has occasionally covered a song he did not write but he is known first and foremost as a singer songwriter who performs his own compositions and most people who are familiar with him associate him with music he has written. It is not reasonable to call him "a cover artist". He is a singer/songwriter who has thrown in a non original here and there.

  • Respond to this video... I mispoke and should not have said he is "strictly" a singer/songwriter ... I should have said he is primarily a singer/songwriter

  • @jessthehorse You are correct. No problem. I should'nt of commented to begin with.

  • @Hope2009pc :

    Are you kidding me?

  • @Hope2009pc I know others have commented on your statement but you really should do some research before posting.

  • Ist time I have heard Taylor's arrangement, finally someone has done it right

    sunaj

  • Antispetic? Glen Campbell's version? How does one respond to that? I realize music is all a personal-taste thing, but antiseptic? Glen Campbell's "Witchita Lineman" remains one of the most achingly beautiful songs of the modern era. His melancholy vocals and those enigmatic lyrics couldn't be more perfect for each other. I've listened to several covers, some of them passable/competant. But GC's stands at the top of the heap, far as I'm concerned.

  • @sjplwc Everyones entitled to their own opinion, I don't really like Country, and this version is not Country whereas GC's is. I think that's the difference.

  • @veda1954 Cambell's was not really a country style recording. He simply is a southern boy and sings with a southern drawl as he speaks but the recording was pop and was done in the parlance of that era which is now quite a few years ago and thus less modern in recording technique, instrumentation etc

  • @jessthehorse You're probably right, I'm not a connoisseur but I still maintanin that JT puts a different slant on this song. It's probably more as Webb envisioned it, more "folky".

  • @veda1954 - yes, that is fair. James truly makes everything he sings his own.

  • I never knew James recorded this. A lovely version. Heartfelt, if not a bit over-orchestrated for JT. I'm used to hearing James barebones & front porchy.

Nevertheless, this is a lovely cover, surpassing, imho, Glen Campbell's rather antisceptic rendition (which I say as someone who logged many miles of beautiful nostalgic moments listening to this on the 8-track in the car w/ my folks & little brother (all 3 gone now), and my sister, who remains.

Thanks for sharing this JT's version.

  • @enilegnave21 I hear you on this!

  • "Billy Joel said, and it was at the Songwriter's Hall of Fame ceremony, that it was a song about an ordinary man thinking extraordinary thoughts. That brought tears to my eyes because he came closer than anyone to getting it." quote from Jimmy Webb

  • @granako Its been awhile since you remarked on this song .. but I have to tell you Im very happy you posted it. Very nice words and very worthwhile and I couldn't agree more.

  • I presume JT desired to cover this song because it is so drop-dead beautiful, and he is a top-level artist who can sing what he wants so I guess he decided to give it a try. Oddly, this to me was not instantly recognizable as James Taylor -- maybe his voice is changing or I'm just not hearing it as well. And his version does not replace Glen Campbell's in my affections. But it's certainly a pleasure to listen to.

  • @voiceofmegatron

I agree. It took (& I've been a fan for more years than I care to admit) me to mid-2nd phrase to be certain it was JT, (and in many parts it sounds nothing like James.) And although my affection for Campbell's version will never die & his version represents a cherished time of my life that is gone; I just listened again & found it "antisceptic" & devoid of the depth of feeling found here, or in the author's version. Listen to Jimmy Webb, he grows on you w/ his special magic!

  • @voiceofmegatron His voice has changed, it is more mellow now. I think this song was quite a challenge for him, particularly that high, elongated note "still on the liiiiiiiiine", but he manages it, and even live he does it well. I don't think he could have sung this song 30 years ago.

  • This is such a good song that is nearly impossible to screw up. Very enjoyable - Jimmy Webb's version is excellent, Glen Campbell's is sublime. Agree it is not a contest - each has its good points - this version is very Chris Rea in arrangement.

  • "and Oakland Raider lineman....

Is still far behiiiiind " Go cowboys !!!

  • Why, James????

  • why does there always have to be a best or better version? Music isn't a competition for Pete's sake! Try not to be a music snob and find what merit there may be in every version.

  • JT is great, but this is substandard after hearing Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb's versions of this all-time great song. JT sounds extra nasal, and the performance and the arrangement don't capture the image of the lineman up there and his loneliness and sense of duty the way the other two versions do. In other words, this is too James Taylorish.

  • @rdangelo I agree James does a great job as always but, Glen is better. Why did James choose to cover this song? It's weird.

  • TAYLOR IS ONE OF THE GREATEST

  • OUT OF ALL THE DIFFERENT PERFORMERS ON YOUTUBE....JAMES TAYLOR IS THE BEST..I THINK!

  • @furley523 ....you are right!!!

  • I've always loved this song and "By the time I get to Phoenix"...Great Glen Campbell tunes and a a great version by JT who never ceases to amaze me...

  • are you sure this is james Taylor?Doesn't sound like him! I'd have to say the better version is Glen Campbell-he knocks it outta the park!

  • @thecharlotteharvey

This is definitely James Taylor. I like the Glen Campbell version as well but James is my favorite... hope you liked it too!

  • are you sure this is james Taylor?Doesn't sound like him!

  • I love this song - one of my favourites - the very definition of wistful. Bit of a fan of James Taylor too, so hearing this version for the first time was a treat.

    Thanks for uploading.

  • this could get more views, more music like this please!!

  • Beautiful song, beautiful video!

  • I've seen you in concert James and your voice captures my soul, for that I thank you.

  • Wow...hearing this version actually made my eyes a bit moist! Not many songs do that to me, ya know? And the video's beautiful, too! I've gotta try some of that redwood climbing!

  • I don't even know how I stumbled on to this song or video - but sure glad I did. JT's version is great and you've done it justice with this beautiful video. Don't know why it makes me so sad - but still can't stop listening/watching. Thanks!!!

  • granako... trying to let you know "HunterMann" is Glen Campbell... check out comments to Dennis Brown rendition; I believe Glen MEANT to say.. he believes every single rendition of this song... HIS, James Taylor, Keith Urban, REM's, etc., and of course THE ULTIMATE.. Dennis Brown... are ALL beautiful individual renditions of this hauntingly beautiful tune... timeless... thank you for posting it granako

  • Congrats on a fabulous video granako. Fab version also of a great song.

  • My heart and feet stop everytime I hear James Taylor. You can identify him instantly, just by a chord. This was an awesome video...

  • JT did a nice job, but NOBODY can touch Glenn on this song for me. Glenn's version makes me cry every time. Just perfect match of artist and song.
