  • Great video, I have question. I'm looking to connect my XS to my computer and get a .wav or .mp3 for sharing with friends. What do you have to do to be able to do this? Are you able to use the sounds of the Motif itself or will they be replaced by the midi sounds of your computer? Thank you.

  • what about with mac?

  • Hi, great work man..thnks 4 putting this up..but have got a question??..under the utility information do i need to enter all those information manually??.. or the internent will detect all those information??..x

  • Hi this is great, can you tell me how to connect my motif xs8 to my mac so that I can transfer songs I've recorded on the motif to the garage band app on my mac, Thank you

  • cmorganis,

I am writing from Mandeville, Jamaica W.I. I appreciate yoru videos, they really help. I realize that the network does work with windows 7, so I imagine the crossover cable would be the ideal setup for me. I do have my wifi router and tried connectin git that way but wasn't succesful. Do you know wehre we can find more instructional videos like yours?

  • can i use this as a controller with fruity loops studio 9

  • do you know how to connect the motif xs to a imac running osx using a crossover cable?? thanks

  • thanks for the video... do you know how to use the crossover cable with an imac (osx) ?

  • hey dude i was wondering how to get a usb via vista connected to my motif xs6 working??? can u help when i first bort the motif xs6 it only came with a owners manual, headphones and cubase ai4 how do i connect it to cubase???

  • you need to convert your song into a .wav file. Currently you are saving as a motif song as you mention. You must go and record in 'integrated sampling' into a song track as audio. Once done (i.e. you got audio on track 7 of your song 35) you can save as .wav into USB stick that track 7 -which is the audio of the rest tracks-.

  • @cmorganis

    thnx 4 reply!

cant i make a midi file? becuz i jst used d internal motif sounds.. i hav tried doing dis, make .mid file, but wen i play it on d pc, al d diff. instrument tracks are converted 2 piano n it al sounds jumbled.

i m realy sory if my questions sound silly :P

    plz help

  • @9manav you must convert to audio. A midi file is just a bunch of notes (data no audio) so your PC goes and adds piano sounds and it sounds jumbled like that. Follow my tutorials - check out the 4rth tutorial there is a lot for you to learn there.

  • @ 2:16 - "Once you've finished upsetting your computer..." LOL!!! I know that's not what he meant but, he is using a PC, after all.

  • it does sound like that but i am sure you know i said 'finished up setting your computer'. My native language is Greek, I wonder if you could speak Greek as I do English?...ha!

  • cmorgan, you are a great instructor! One question please. Must I have internet access to get the ip addresses?

Also, can I insert a microphone to motif to record audio track? if yes, which port?

Please give me the step by step vocoder processes...

    God bless!!!

  • You do not need internet. You can use a router if in the room with motif or just a crossover cable like in this vid.

As for the vocoder check out my second tutorial.

  • Great instructional video. i set up the connection between my XS and computer but when I go to the file menu to "mount" my computer I am asked to enter a user-name and password. Did I miss a step or something.

  • you can just enter any username. This is normal. Yamaha asks for those 2 even if you don't want them and you must give at least a usename (whatever you put in is the same)

  • Just a great job I have many synths and the MotifXS is new for me .. what a great help your videos are !!!! Thank You..

  • ur welcome

  • Could you please tell me how I can change the sound on my motif xs6 in a fast way.... I am playing alive and need to change sounds fast but I don't know how. Is there any way to pre set sounds and have them ready for when I need them right away?

  • check out motifator website for that info i believe you can use a pedal to change voices in master mode for you live playing

  • Hello Morganis, I have a question about the crossover cable. In your video yuo say that it´s not a standar network cable, ¿what kind of cable is it? . Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • just ask for a crossover networking cable from any computer store that's how its called

  • you look like an arab...you must be from greece or mediterranean.

    its a compliment, btw

  • i am not of Arab decent I am actually Greek of Spartan decent and currently live in Greece.

No offence taken - i like Arabs- but you have just given me the opportunity to say to everyone that life has taught me that the best way to judge humans is by their quality as living beings and not their race. I've been lucky enough to meet people from around the world and in the end what counts is how we live our lives and promote our beliefs in our everyday life helping our fellow humans.

  • this is SPARTAAAAAAA!!!!!!????

  • hey dude whats better for motif? mac or pc?

  • 100% mac for anything concerning art and computers. Only downside is that software is more frequently available for PC and is updated more quickly. But macs rule and are virtually without bugs...

  • Thank you so much for this video. I tried for weeks to set up my MotifXS to my router without success. Bought a crossover cable for $3 and in 10 minutes I am hooked up like you show. Thanks so much for your helpful videos!! Jim

  • u are welcome

  • hi, thanks for all your videos. i already got the cross cable, i know my pc Ip address, but i dont get why you have 2 ip addresses (.38 and .77) is one from ur motif xs? where can i find it? also can you explain a lit bit more how to set up subnet mask and default gateway please? and also in motif dns 1? please im totally new at this

  • hi you are correct about the IPs: one is PC the other is Motif. All you ask is under network connections. You do not need DNS if you are following my setup I have it there from previous experiments. Default gateway is your router access IP it's usually the one I provided but can vary with router model and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

  • can this connection be achieved using USB cable instead?

  • nope - it's an ethernet connection- unless you can come up with some software solution I am not aware of

  • Thanks for your help!!!

  • the mic is a Rode

  • Hey, this is a GREAT tutorial. Is there a tutorial on this same subject with regards to doing this with a Mac G4 computer or would it be the same process? Just wondering. Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing this video.

  • Yes same process probably different menus although you might want to check into the cable needed. There is a possibility that a Mac just needs an ordinary CAT 5 ethernet cable due to its more sophisticated O/S. You would have to look into that only.

  • Great information. Thanks for the reply and the help.

  • sorry if I offended you but I never said to be an authority in motif XS just trying to help others. This setup works ok anyway so no harm done. Next time pls IM me if you notice something so I can correct it. No reason to be negative publicly. Your first point is incorrect..Just to get the record straight the message is for a local connection not wireless I used wireless as an example of the alert that will show up...

  • Hey man, I was wondering if you could make a video about how to connect PC to another PC like with two monitors, I just can't figure it out. Thanks.

  • check out virtual chaining or vst system link

  • thanks for the kind words texnewwf1968 sorry i erased your comment by mistake...they got the reply and remove buttons too close

  • thanks for all your motif xs videos. u need a good haircut though!

  • i did the vid some time ago but i generally don't care about the outside appearance but more so the inside

  • I have a question, which model or brand Dimm memory can I use in my motif xs7

    thank you

  • right off the top of my head I remember a spec about the memory type in the manual...i'll check it up and let you know

  • ei can u teach me the step by step on color coding the crossover.

  • it's simple. Get the firmware upgrade from yamahasynth website and put into a flash-stick alone. Don't have any other files in the flash-stick! Connect to Motif XS while it's turned off. Turn on the XS while keeping the up cursor and the utility button pressed simultanuously. Installation will begin. If the file you download is compressed don't forget to uncompress it

  • mlan is best if you have it but not necessary. It will allow you to do audio recording too. The firmware upgrade is MANDATORY! The latest yamaha software only works with the latest XS firmware. The dimms are not necessary -> The extra mem will help you in the vocoder usage and in having extra voices downloaded not in recording midi

  • ok so you downloded an .SMF file (a midi file). Sounds like your tracks are unassigned and some crappy midi piano is doing all the playback in your DAW.

  • So you either assign to each track a virtual instrument or you use the Motif XS as an external instrument in combination with Studio manager and the Motif XS editor

  • After some minor setting from your XS ('SEQ SETUP' and Utility) make sure you are in SONG mode so you can assign each track from the Motif.

  • download Studio Manager and the Motif XS editor from yamahasynth(dot)com -i am writing it like this because youtube is preventing me from writing dot-com

  • Dude, seriously, you're the MAN!!!

  • Great video!

Can you do one with sampling thru MLAN?

  • hey cmorganis...your videos seem very helpful but u havent quite figured out MY problem....could u do a tutorial on how to set up a connection but with using an ethernet cable and a router....i need to know how to set up a folder and all that so could u please do a video on this??

  • Thank you for tihs information I have done my answer

  • Geia sou patrida!

  • se euxaristo file gia ta kala logia, eimai kainourios sto Motif kai prospatho mazi me allous na moirasoyme plhrofories gia to xeirismo tou Motif, spoudasa 6 xronia ameriki kai eksou kai h profora! ---> Thanks for the kind words, I try to share with others info about the Motif. I've studied and lived in the US for several yrs.

  • Hey C,

Just wanna let you know that this video was very helpful for me, even though I have my Motif XS connected through network router. Planning to put up any more videos? Yamaha should pay you for this, your instructional videos are great.

    Mike

  • Hi Papa,

Actually it is of no importance when connecting directly to your PC because the only important aspect is your computer's IP that is needed for the motif xs to gain access.

I assume that if you want to do the opposite ''access your Motif XS from the PC'' you want to know the IP address of the Motif XS. That is why you set it manually (192.138.1.77). If someone does this I think the File server option from the Motif XS network menu must also be selected.

  • hi C Morganis, all is running fine, i can load and save from Pc to XS.

The only problem before was to set up on my firewall the IP's to autorise the connection.

don't you have post your video link to the motiforum ?

I will update Moessieurs with your video link.

  • Thank you for posting this video on Moessieurs! It's an honor Papa. I'll see about announcing the video in Motiforum soon and mentioning about the posting on Moessieurs too :)

I am happy you found the video useful/

  • You're welcome, the update is online with your video, i have also wrote a tutorial in french with capture from my computer and two capture from your video.

    Thank's for All.

  • Papa,

I just checked out the ethernet section on Moessieurs. Your tutorial is excellent and really complements my video. I just posted the links to this video and to Moessieurs on the Motiforum

  • Thank you i have done my answer.

  • Great C morganis, i will try, i have a cross over cable.

Just one question on the computer network connection you have register 192.168.1.38 for your XS (and you write for device in the mount the same ip adress).

But on the Xs screen network you have put in the ip adress 192.138.1.77, where do you take this ip adress ?

Thank you for this great tips !
