Phil wrote this song for his father, who was dying of cancer. I played this song almost constantly during 1995, the year my father (and Uncle Jerry) died.
@InspectorRuss yeah, this must have been around the time when Phil was starting to lose the ability to sing because of years singing in the wrong octave for his natural voice or something. It's in his book and such, they talk about it in more detail.
@Millarpro I still can't get how he sounded SO good on the original American Beauty recording. They didn't have auto-tune back then, and even if they did, it still wouldn't have done that good of a job.
Maybe his singing just degraded over the years. Who knows. Still a great song. The American Beauty version still brings a tear to my eye.
The Grateful Dead...A true AMERICAN band. I love it.
This was a great show! I had just flown back from the Bahamas and brought a big conch shell. We got folks to line up along the back rim of the amphitheater and when I blew the conch, we all rolled down as one 'unbroken chain'. If you were there, you remember getting kicked in the head! Thanks for the memories.
i so miss the family i had all these years ago. thanks for uploading this vid....it helps to bring back the feeling i had then....prolly the best time of my life.
I was at the Hampton Spring 86 show when they broke Box Of Rain out again. I was the first person in the building, 1st on line with my taper friend, and I remember the security guy saying.."the keyboard player said they have something big in store for you all tonight."
hahaha i hear you on those shorts haha i have some deadhead friends who were on tour for 20 years and such, they say that bob sucks! we will be listening to an epic show and a good bob tune would come on.....they would say fuck this and skip to the nest tune. i always got pissed. lol but they had no reason. ide ask y and all they would say is he just sucks! haha
He often kills the mood. He has some of the worst song choices in dead history totally derailing some epic segues that were building. He has many shining moments but I understand where your buddies are coming from.
I was there at Shoreline the day before this concert, and it was so cool 'cause they made a movie of the Summer Solstice concert and I saw some people in it that I had seen when I was at the show the day before. I was visiting my sister in Mountain View and a 'miracle' occurred - her then boyfriend got me a ticket to the show!!
I missed them this time around unfortunately. I remember in 2004 it was $35 to see them on the lawn. I hope there's another tour like that. they can't go out like this. Stick with the outdoor amphitheaters PLEASE! You need to be out on a lawn to appreciate a dead show.
totally, although I saw em in 04 and then caught them in some of the big boxes they played and it was so different. Almost like the difference between a good sounding 60s tape at fillmore east compared to west. I loved the outdoor stuff. Spring-Summer '10?
Phil that is horrible. Bobby come on with the shorts man!

I remember a guy asking the Dead why Bob looks like a girl to which Garcia replied:
"Hell, back in the '60s sometimes Bob looked better than a girl..."

LOL, I guess it his lounge singer voice and his goofy personality; e.g. "I'll be stir-fried." It's an acquired taste.
Although Ace is one of my all-time favorite albums.
Peace
