So funny how almost every country in the world still wants to play the biggest part in bringing the wall down. In fact it were ordinary people from east germany who started the process of the end of the iron curtain.
Politicans only reacted to it, because those people from east germany didn't leave a choice. Otherwise it would have taken another decade.
The Berliner Mauer is not there anymore, and we will not forget the People were shot and killed in those 28 years...But there is another Wall, the Wall between Israel and Palestina...DON'T FORGET this nation, there is still not Freedom, people are dying and killed by the Israeli brutality ...so many years ....!
After the fall of Berlin Wall, East Germans gained freedom and their basic human rights. After the fall of Saigon, South Vietnamese lost freedom and their basic human rights
Why should I have a minus with my comments about Lech Walesa? I just wanted to write something funny, I think that Walesa himself will out of this dare.
congratulations to all the germans on your anniversary. i lived 15km from the german border at the time and we all (the young ppl) cheered for you. we saw all those frightened germans crossing the border and looking to get to warsaw to west german embassy. we were happy to see you free and united. cheers mates.
Because if not the Poles (polacks in your language) in 1920 vs. the USSR, the whole of Europe could be under communism, the whole of Germany, all of France, the entire United Kingdom. That is why we are so proud of myself ;) ;ę ;D
The Berlin Wall fell, not because the Germans destroyed it. In Poland was free elections, democracy won. This was begin of the change in Middle and Eastern Europe. The Soviets lost power. In addition, of gas and oil prices fell, the Soviets did not have the money to maintain their empire.
Had it not been started in Poland, Lech Wałęsa don't must destroyed this domino and the cameraman on the Segway. The Berlin Wall fell, dominoes fell and cameraman too. All of this caused one man - Lech Wałęsa.
@skaw90 : You miss the point. It goes back further than the Polish elections of June 04, 1989. You need to go back to August 30, 1980 with the rise of Solidarity and Lech Walesa in Poland. You need to go back still further to the election of the Polish Pope, John Paul II and his inspiring visit to Poland in June of 1979. This is where the fall of the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall started. It was a long ten year journey that culminated in the fall of the Wall in Berlin.
@skaw90 : Yes, I agree with you....there were many people who were involved, many events that took place that did bring about the fall of the Iron Curtain.
I was there!!

The Polish elections may have played some part in the bringing down of the wall, but it was definitely not the sole and only reason.

You must excuse me SillyGrandpa, but I believe it is you who have missed the point. I directed my response at these sentences by jedrysik:
"The Berlin Wall fell, not because the Germans destroyed it. In Poland was free elections, democracy won."
Regardless of how big a role Poland and it's leaders played in bringing the wall down, it was by far not the main or only reason it came down.
skaw90 2 years ago
No disrespect to Poland whatsoever, I applaud their stand against communism just as much as I do the Germans.
