How anyone could find this boring is beyond me, by the way. So much more interesting than the average game of 9-Ball in which players shoot balls in getting wide-open field position on roughly the better side of the next object ball - there's absolutely nothing to think about there!
Terrific safety shot @ 2:00!! Takes lots of guts, too - virtually no telling if one might leave a dead-on combination shot (off the stack, that is).
That shot on the 5, by the way, is no foul - judging from where he positioned the cue ball, one must assume the player called a safety.
What's intriguing is that Appleton then makes an intentional foul leaving the CB where one can easily go upstream, with no threats whatsoever, and later looks disappointed having to swallow the 3-foul penalty...
@brianakri You may still able to find the video of Earl's 1995 Maine Event Straight Pool match against 14.1 legend Johnny Ervolino (wonderful patterns to learn from, unfortunately a bit over the hill already back then, and sadly deceased). Apart from sloppy patterns, some reckless shots and generally awkward position play, his Straight Pool does not differ much from that of other players, and not at all in terms of the speed chosen for individual shots.

@brianakri He already played a straight pool tournemant. It was called the Maine Event (in Maine hence the little word play).
he finished something like 3rd loosing to Efren Reyes. It was the first 14.1 tourny for both players!!!

I think he announced a safety shot because he had no position on the next balls after the 3.
Just simple...

The shot on the 3 looked legal to me. Why would the player play it, if he thought he would foul?
