"natural" or "endocrinological castrati" are born with hormonal anomalies such as Kallmann's syndrome, or have undergone unusual physical or medical events during their early lives that reproduce the vocal effects of castration without being castrated. (Wikipedia)
@killerbunny123123 no. he suffers problem on his larynx. he is a specially condition which larynx did not develop thus, he did not break his voice. he could maintain his soprano vocal because of that.
being "natural born castrato" doesn't means he was literally castrated... a natural castrato, is the same thing with an endocrinological castrato. this doesn't mean his balls were cut off, but that because of a very rare hormonal disorder, called Kallmann's syndrome, their voice remained at that state, without being developed into a normal male voice, with it's known range. Of course, there may be various reasons for the the voice, such as medical or physical events suffered by the subject.
@ghetzy13 Well spoken, there are in fact various reasons possible. I often wondered why most of the listeners are so sure it should be a hormonal disorder. His appearence does not fit to this. Has anyone ever thought about a larynx-hypoplasis?
i like this! finally a modern performer wearing the clothing appropriate to the era this music was created in! the next time i see a singer dressed like Mr.Rogers doing a Farinelli number, I'll puke for a week in disgust!
The last castrato was Alessandro Moreschi (Rome, 1858-ivi 1922). Radu Marian is a phenomenal singer, but I do not think he's unmanned. Obviously the thickness of his vocal cords, that is insreased by testosterone, is not the same as a tenor. I am not a physician and I cannot say why he's got such a voice.
I've never heard a voice like this before, I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing. I would think his voice would sound richer and fuller even though it didn't break, since he has the body of a man and not a boy. It just sounds too squeaky to me; reminds me of bollywood music...
@StephenChin1 I would tend to agree with you in that all males can sing soprano (or higher). If they learn to adduct the vocal cords then they can sing it. It is a shame that people assume the gay or modern day castrato but I hate to admit that is the perception I gather from people. Singing like this isn't necessary a gay or castrato "thing". It is art. There are quite a few non-gay men singing high.
I spoke to some friends who played with him! He is not, he is speaking in normal voice! As I know there are just two endocrinological castratos who sing professional: Michael Maniaci and Leandro Bermudez Lafont (still student). Compared to their voice you recognise, that he uses falsetto.
i spoke to him, and his voice is not very high, but not low either. His singing voice does NOT sound like a countertenor or sopranist, nor like a woman's voice. When you hear it live it's something very unusual... :) to me it sounded like a natural voice, not falsetto.
Marian is an "endocrinological castrato" or "natural castrato". A natural castrato is a singer who never went through puberty and so kept his "unbroken" voice intact.
@RedPanda91 Due to an endocrinological defect he never went through normal puberty. Such people are often referred to as "endocrinological castrato" or "natural castrato" .
Your statement that "you can't be born castrated" shows that you seriously underestimate the wide variety of congenital disorders that humans suffer from.
@RedPanda91 Actually you can (Swyer Syndrome for example). It's not even about being male or female - the only thing (in terms of voice) that differed castratos from women is a fact that their bones grew more than normal because no testosterone nor estrogen induced puberty, which gave them some advantages with lung power.
@Neisza No, they had boy vocal chords (shorter than Women) with the vocal cavity of a man (larger than women) and large lungs. They were also able to train from boyhood into their teen years uninterrupted. Intact singers couldn't do that because it is dangerous to train the voice during the puberty period when the voice is changing, and largely useless since things like tessitura can change, anyways, during that period. That gave them huge technical advantages as well.
@RedPanda91 Hypoplasia is underdevelopment or incomplete development of a tissue or organ. In Marian´s case it is probably testicles. So I suppose one can call him a "natural castrato".
He is a natural soprano, but not a castrato. Castrati had huge chest capacity, and Radu does not. Notice at around 1:48 how he has to take several deep breaths to complete one movement. A castrato would have been able to sustain through this easily. Also, for whatever reason he was able to retain his prepubertal range, I don't believe he has Kallman Syndrome. Trademarks of KS are large hip and chest fat deposits, thin muscles, short crown to pubis length, and long, spindly arms.
It's not only a pleasure to listen to his voice, I also love his "performance", his look, his poised posture, everything is perfect!
Thank you infinitely for filming and sharing this. I would love to see him perform live, does anybody know anything about his scedule? He is performing in Vienna on December, 3. That's the only information I found
I believe it's an archlute (granted, I'm going on this from a Google image search, but that's what it looks like ^^). The opera being performed was written during the peak of the archlute's popularity, so it wouldn't surprise me if the instrument you're referring to is one.
This is one of my favorite arias he does. This is so awesome! Live Radu performances. I don't suppose you've ever heard him speak, have you? I'm keen to hear his speaking voice and see if it is anything like Medina's or Maniaci's.
wow, i'm surprised by how attractive he is. its just so strange to hear that voice with that body.
