One of the 4 judges was a Russian who gave her a 10 in spite of the big wobble. That is why she got an average 9.95.
Natalia had a nice personality, her exercises were original and ahead of her time but this routine could definately not get a 10 by 2 judges (out of 4).
This was in no way a 9.95 routine. All those mistakes. Shaposhnikova does not deserve to be tied with Nadia for the highest score in Olympic compulsories history. It is a shame that people actually are led to believe that Natalia Shaposhnikova matched Nadia Comaneci score for score in compulsories at the 1980 olympiad. Nadia was far superior.
I perhaps would have given this a 9.9 for the balance error and the rhythm break but no lower than that! Her flexibility and amplitude are some of the best of these games!
Shaposhnikova's beam routine score here was too generous. She deserved a 9.80, and being generous here, maybe a 9.85. She had that big wobble, and the break in fluidity/movement.The score was just way too high.
Your observation shows little insight. You should consider doing commentary for NBC along with the inept team of Elfi Schlegl, Tim Dagget and Al Trautwig. They continuously repeated the phrase "gymnastics is a sport of deductions".
On the contrary, a gymnastics routine back in the day was scored in view of virtuosity, form, technical precision and amplitude. It is about the "whole package" and not just jotting down the flaws and deducting .1 here and there as you seem to observe.
Very well said, I hate that hideous NBC Trio, when will NBC wake up and see how unpopular they are?.
I feel we could learn alot about gymnastics today when you look at this, it is true artistry and gymnastics....Its become such a mess of difficulty which totally outweighs any execution or artistry... I miss you gymnastics.
Gorgeous. How Shapo managed to be at once so thin, so strong, and so boneless, I'll never know. she never appears wiry, tense, or hard, and the totally balletic movement is one of the many former gymnastics virtues which are lost forever...
Natalia does match Nadia in the compulsory rounds with a 9.95 here-but Nadia scored a 10.00 on HER compulsory beam set. Natalia of course scored 10.00 on her compulsory vault and she and Nadia socred 9.95 on their remaining events. :)

9,90. would be right. 9.95 means that two judges gave her a 10 (on of them was a Russian judge). Bronze medal in the end.

i always loved the compulsory dismounts
they were so elegant and it wasnt like they were trying to fit in as many twists and flips as possible
and they almost always stuck them
those were the days (sigh)

You should see the BBC commentators, they really value all the work of the gymnasts, besides you can learn a lot of movements...

Exquisite. I just love Shapo to bits. Her optional beam imo is the greatest of her age as far as superb lines, and those planches of hers!! :)
