Well the good thing about Petula Clark (among many things) is that she will die in her bed sometime in her 80's or 90's possibly next to her husband and not in the bathtub of the Beverly Hilton like Whitney Houston had the honor of doing. Some people handle fame better then others and it helps to be famous nearly 50 years ago when a lot of people "manned up" better and now be somewhat forgotten then in the present day and age! It may be harsh but it is true!
while the sixties were a decade of change I still flashback to music which was more innocent and pure. You can close your eyes and by and large you can see the music and it's gooooood!
This hit by Petula Clark was the 90th #1 song on what is now Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts. It also hit #1 in Australia. It hit #5 on the Top 40 charts and in Canada. It was #12 in the United Kingdom. This was Petula Clark's last #1 hit on any chart.
What an amazing talent. I was only six years old when this song was released. This was the first song I heard when my parents gave my my first radio. The station was KFRC in San Francisco.
@ least up until around 1966 when people began to change their mode of dress to be more "with it". Up till then most people exercised a modicum of sartorial decorum. Enough on this subject!
Finally, except for the occasional casual weekend I am always wearing wool trousers and all cotton shirts in classic tailoring. I would wear a tie and suit everyday at my job but I would stand out like a sore thumb so go with the flow. Hail the 60's wear wearing a suit meant you arrived and wish to look good when out in public!
One more thing, I can't figure out why we have become such a nation of slobs! Unfortunately, I am a dinosaur as I own several expensive suits, 30 pairs of trouser, 100 ties and 50 dress shirts (and not one pair of jeans, I might add).
I listened to what my mum and dad did when I was little. A lot of the time I couldn't go to sleep unless my radio was set to 1170AM 2CH. It's songs like these that take me back to the mid 90's - those were the best times
theres something about her voice the songs and her looks . ime into bands like queen /rush /hawkwind /sabbath .but i could watch and listen to her allday .
People often ask me what the sixties were like? Just close your eyes and imagine a warm summer evening with the windows and doors open to catch a cool breeze, family members talking, maybe a hot rod or two going down the street. Then out of the speaker of the radio thats always on, and through all the crackeling and static noise comes this angelic voice of Petula Clark and everyone starts to hum, sing, or dance along to whatever joy she is singing. Maybe thats just my recollection.
@papoj1PVR We reserved them mostly for traveling on vacation. Now Big Boy restaurants and others had the jukeboxs at the tables which was very cool. I do remember thinking that those recording the songs seemed to be having as much fun singing them as I had listening to them. Sounds like you were there.
@johnnyu278 Totally agree on your comment, though I was just a 9 year old kid I knew I was experiencing something special "my wish would have been to have been a few years older so I could take in everything from that so magical era"... The 60's will ALWAYS be the era I loved the most...
@sxitezza Now the sixties are more of a fond memory and a state of mind. Keep going and it will take you there or back to a simpler times and the music was always fun to listen to because the people recording the tunes of the day seemed to be having as much fun making them as I did listening to their masterpieces. One thing the sixties taught us was its OK to be different. Be yourself and dream to enjoy.
First heard this when I was young that was actually in the 80's my mom loves the classics. I still love this song. There's the part that gives me the chills, where she was almost whispering. Petula Clark looks great and her hair looks modern only reminds me how we always go back to the oldies.
Besides being cute. adorable, and a great singer, she is maybe the most decorated British musician, having been awarded/knighterdas COMMANDER of the British Empire! Quite a gal!
Did you ever ask yourself why music like this isn't produced any longer? Did you ever ask yourself who produces the current "popular" music, and why they produce it? Did you ever ask yourself how and why we have sunk to the depths we have sunk to? Ask yourself those questions and be honest with yourself, and you'll come to revelations that it is high time you came to.
The chords starting at 0.37 and 1.46 are sublime. Focus [Dutch band] used them [uncredited?] on Focus III. The GREAT Tony Hatch of course. Are they featured in any classical pieces to anyone's knowledge?
@martinjp1958 Saw your post. The chords are bizarre (brilliant) for a pop song. From Gmajor, we get B major (III#) and then Abminor (bII). The effect is modulation by a third to B major. "Take off your coat" is yet another modulation by a third to D major. With the big crescendo, the chords create huge tension (resolved deceptively again in Eb at "Don't sleep in the subway). You can find modulations by thirds in songs by Schubert and Schumann although not so much even in Mozart and Beethoven.

I love Petula Clark's singing!! She was one of the greats from the sixties. She had hit after hit after hit. "Don't Sleep In The Subway" is my favorite song by her!
Thank you, StepheninLondon, for the posting. As a boy, I used to watch The Hollywood Palace. They had quite a number of major musical acts appear on their stage, Petula being one of them. "Don't Sleep in a Subway" always reminds me of how innocent and responsibility-free my childhood was. I really miss those times.
" It just captures the essence of the 60's--hope, joy, optimism and any problem in the world could be solved. Unfortunately subsequent decades just didn't live up to the expectations of the 1960's!"
that's so true, the world looked upwards and onwards into the stars! Now we're living in the aftermath and have to salvage what is left of whatever....
This IS my favorite Petula Clark songs and one of my favorite songs of all time. It just captures the essence of the 60's--hope, joy, optimism and any problem in the world could be solved. Unfortunately subsequent decades just didn't live up to the expectations of the 1960's!
She was married here and already had 2 children; they tried to keep it a secret from the americans; well..to say it sure wasn't publicized.......i still luv her
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderfully classic video of my all-time favorite song! Petula Clark was once interviewed about which one, of the many, was her favorite song? She said it was "Don't Sleep In The Subway". Great memories of being an 8-year old girl in the summer of '67 when this song came out. Was also the best year for music!
I knew her voice was pure as the driven snow, but I actually had never taken a close look at her. This video and a couple of others on YouTube showed me how stunningly beautiful she was. What a package! Thanks for posting it.
Didn't know that this was two songs put together..it's a great song by a marvelous singer..back in the 60's Petula & other performers could go on the Hollywood Palace, Ed Sullivan,etc..thanks for posting...
another little know fact on this song is hat it was actually TWO SONGS PUT TOGETHER! Petula once said in an interview..THis is a lip sync but rarely did she lip sync this gem is from the hollywood palace October 1967
With respect, that isn't quite correct. It isn't 2 songs put together. It was constantly mentioned in interviews back in the 60's (including by Pet, herself, and Tony Hatch), that three different pieces of music previously composed by Hatch were meshed together to play one after the other as the song progressed. In Tony's words: "from pop to symphonic to a Beach Boys-like melody for the chorus". So just one song, but 3 styles of music within it. Pure genius, imho... it's a beautiful song :)
I Love this Song! It looks like she's lip-synching , even back then? She could have held a mic to make it look authentic, but i'd have loved to hear her natural voice :)
I remember exactly when and where I was visiting in Pennsylvania (I lived in Indiana) when I first heard this song on the radio, and it has been my favorite Pet song ever since. I never saw a live version. Thanks so much for making my day!
Ahh got a pic of Petula,my Aunt Liz and Dad sitting on the bench in my grandparents garden. They were neighbours, She didn't look like this in the pic I have, lol
Jings its so great to see her perform this again - its great and wonderful to see her now, she still has great energy but love to see her as she was in the late 1960's
petula clark, the beautiful little lady with the great big voice. in my opinion the finest female singer ever. she put out some of the best hits of the 60s.
Actually the "subway" referred to in the song is a pedestrian tunnel, not a subterranean railway system (which Brits call the "underground" or the "tube"). Sleeping in a pedestrian tunnel is risky enough, but sleeping in the New York subway will get you robbed, raped and murdered -- and not necessarily in that order!
Maybe sleeping in a Canadian subway isn't quite as dodgy?
Thanks 4 clearing that up. I didn't know anyone who would sleep in Chi-town's subways over an argument. But I figured it had to be one hell of a fight.
I don't know which dress was more weider for Petula to wear: This one (on The Hollywood Pallace) with the top part cut out or the one she wears on The Dean Martin Show from that same year in which it was in yellow and cut out like a dog collar. I think I see what the two have in common: They had a mod edginess to it.
Exactly what I had been thinking. The way the chorus takes an unexpected turn from the verses is so like something Brian Wilson did with songs like "The Girls on the Beach." Beautiful...
Timeless, ageless, classic. Gems like this will shine in the wilderness of mediocrity that is modern 'pop' music. Petula Clark is and shall always be immortal!!
Well the good thing about Petula Clark (among many things) is that she will die in her bed sometime in her 80's or 90's possibly next to her husband and not in the bathtub of the Beverly Hilton like Whitney Houston had the honor of doing.

I never realized just how genuinely pretty Ms. Clark was in 1967.

Pet Clark sings "Beach Boys" (sound) - great combination!

When I hear songs likes this, it's somewhat bittersweet. It reminds me how much I miss quality music.
