My opinion is: You are truly one of the coolest and most creative drummer of the 60's ( and probably still is.)
I have admired your skills in Heartfull of soul and Shapes of things and of course many other songs for 'bout three years now. Keep rocking with love from Sweden ;-)
An absolutely wonderful video, one of the most informative and historical I have ever seen, out of hundreds. It is great that two of the Yardbirds went on to form Renaissance, my second favorite of all prog bands. Further, I learned just today, that the Yardbirds are together and touring.
Ravi Shankar's sitar has been a big influence on R&R, more than a passing fade or gimmick, it was called Raga-Rock in the 60s: G. Harrison on Norwegian Wood & Brian Jones on Paint It Black. Roger McGuinn's Byrds used the drone of Indian music's sitar adapted for guitar, so did Jeff Beck with The Yardbirds, The Velvet Underground (both John Cale's viola & Lou Reed's guitar), The Stooges' guitarist Ron Asheton, Jimmy Page with Led Zeppelin, etc...and these bands influenced a lot of what came later
Other rock musicians who played sitar are a guy that wrote manic depression , a guy that wrote tuesday afternoon, a guy that sang freedom at woodstock, a guy that wrote i aint marchin anymore [and there was the time donavan went on pete seegers tv show and said he mastered the sitar in 3 months when ravi shankar heard that he said ive been playing sitar for 30 years and i still havent mastered it ] .
Well I am really in awe! Sorry for the spelling. Snusmumriken you take the credit of getting me in touch with him!! Hey Jim I have been a great Yb fan in the 60s and have most of your records but I didn't know about your reunion with the New Yardbirds! Are you ever going to come for a concert to Italy? (of course not in San Remo!) I have also seen your song dedicated to Keith Relf, it's quite touching and sincere - were you good friends?
Well, I'd like to think they were good chums!... ;-) They were certainly best friends in the later years of the Yardbirds, because they were going through the same kind of experiences together at the time...
Speaking of which, I often wonder if this is one of the reasons why they named their short-lived band "Together" (just before they formed Renaissance)...
Yes I've just read about their experiences in their biography which I just bought. I think that Keith was always a little depressed because of his health problems. Anyway do you think the "New Yardbirds" will ever hold a concert in Italy? I think they're real good, including the drummer (!), and the lead singer's voice strangely sounds like Keith's!
I have no idea now, when and if they will tour in Italy in the close future... Maybe next year?! The members themselves sometimes don't know about their own touring programme, you know!... ;-)
I believe the fact that John's voice is similar to Keith was part of the reasons why he was recruited as a Yardbird!...
Wos, I really enjoyed this; I have never seen Keith Relf talking! Then also Jeff asking questions to Ravi. Thanks for posting this. By the way are you the real Jim MacCarthy?
Once again, I take the opportunity here to ask the copyright owner(s) to contact me directly if they don't want to see this clip broadcasted on Youtube!
To mr. Jim McCartey

Relf really had a great voice for RnB, one of, if not the best.
