Oil and Gold is such a remarkable album. One of the best of the '80s. Oh for the days when you could buy an album and it would be worth listening to from begining to end.
This is, along with All I Need by Air, one of the greatest songs ever written. I could play this song from this moment in time to the day I die and I will never tire of it. Pure, pure brilliance. For those of you unfortunate enough not to have seen the film Manhunter, I suggest you see it asap and you will hear this song in all its glory. Never has one song suited one scene from a film.
@graywales Trully a brilliant and chilling film. Far superior to the Silence of the Lambs series. I remember feeling a real rush when this song came on during that beautiful and memorable scene. What wonderful, understated intensity and sense of time suspended, as if everything might turn out fine, before the horror finally unfolds. Brilliant.
Yeah, great sound there, but repeated listening tends to bring on a somewhat self-obsessed pointless melancholia, a bit of a mental wank really, try and balance it by listening to something happy now and again....
Lie back close your eyes let your mind empty let this song drift around your head and fill your senses then think of someone that has upset you someone whos hurt you broken your heart you feel that emotion welling up inside a lump in your chest tears rolling down your face !!! This song brings sooo many emotions its 10/10
@THUGALOT22 Nope, I prefer listening to it and thinking of place that it might be about... or places... I see a canyon in the night, trees where it ends - far above me, small river on its bottom, and stars! Oh my, Stars are beautiful! It's beautiful and so deep.... I lova this song more than any other!
You are all novices my space, facebook you tube e-bay you name it and I am on it as THISBIGHUSH I have never gone a day without listening to this since I heard it while cruising in Florida Manhunter is naturally my favourite film
THIS SONG HAS ALWAYS CREATED VERY DEEP, DARK, AND BEAUTIFUL IMAGES IN THE IMAGINATIONS OF ANYONE I'VE EVER KNOWN WHO LOVED IT .THIS MUSIC HAS THE ARCHITYPAL POWER OF WHAT PSYCHOLOGISTS CALL AFFECT IMAGES. THESE ARE IMAGES AND METAPHORS THAT SPEAK TO US AT BIOLOGICAL LEVEL, THERE IS ABSOLUTLY NO NEED TO INTELLECTUALIZE THEM. IMAGES ON THIS LEVEL REPRESENT PURE POWER, FOR BETTER OR WORSE. THEIR SONG'' HAMMERHEADS ''CREATES A VERY SIMILAR VIBE, CHECK IT OUT!
I was really impressed when I happened to be watching Miami Vice back then (SShhh Dont tell anyone) and they had a Shrieback song in the playing as the mood music for the scene. I thought it was very adventurous for Hollywood during a time when everything was commercial to use an obscure band which Shriekback was then in a mainstream show.
Pity,I'm from Budapest,Hungary.Shriekback is virtually uknown here.Back in the late 80-early 90's I was digging the rec.shops for any releases without any success. The keepers(owners)didn't even know the group.Collectorwise I've gotten many of their discs and I must admit:Oil And Gold is their best, incl.some PERFECT music as this example above.Haunting Fairlight II synth, dead, sleeping, deserted industrial landscape in vain...We will die one day,but there are some music never should be forgotten!
After all these years I still listen to it every day and it still puts me in a trance I have evn made my family aware that when I pop my clogs this is what is to be played
@thisbighush You were in a trance when you murdered the Leeds family! You stood in that tree and you watched them goddammit! You stood there and watched them, didn't ya!
@thisbighush Jeeze, you're SMILING? You're even more psychopathic than I first thought. Smiling as you recall your gruesome handiwork...it's chilling, absolutely chilling...
@diztanguy: Sure - I look at a mirror once in a while. What are you insinuating? That I suffer from an acute sense of dissociation? That I occasionally leave the house of a nighttime dressed in one of my dead mother's light blue floral dresses and break into the houses of the people in the nearby **** district where I nonchalantly proceed to torture and murder an entire family? Well are you! I don't know who you think you are young man...
@ofcoursehesthefarmer.don t forget to place the mirror shards in their eyes...you were hiding in the tree...weren t you...?you ve been observing them all this time...!
@ofcoursehesthefarmer.i m the zodiac...never got caught...getting old...in my cosy house in san francisco...wrote my will to be delivered to the police when i die...i do regret what i ve done.
@diztanguy :I've looked at your youtube pageZodiac and I see you're a KateBush fan. This alarms me.I too am an adorer of the bless-ed kate and I fear you may have her in your sights.I beseech you, If you had any thought of consummating your love with Kate and doing a murder on her, please, please banish any such thought from your head. Kate's demise would devastate the whole serial killer community(as well as many other lesser beings). The exquisite, sweet Katherine Bush must be permitted to live
This music has charachter. Which is something I think that is missing in much of today's music. I think the "change" started in the 90s. Most music since the end of the 80s has really sucked.
The quality of music started going downhill with the birth of MTV in December, '80. It was something you could see/hear happening almost immediately if you were around at the time.
You all have done better than me because this song has been my ANTHEM since the stunning movie MANHUNTER I have every version my twitter, e-bay, you tube, my space face book all as thisbighush every day I wake up to it every night I go to bed to it I live for it its simply the best EVER

My favourite song of all time. Pure class. Loved it when I first heard it in Manhunter. They were a very underrated band and I've been a big fan of Barry Adamson since his XTC days up to his work with King Swamp. Beautiful and atmospheric track.

"Holding up an animal fear, soaking up the waves underwater, tuned to music noone can hear... FOREVER IN THIS HALF LIGHT"
Iconic. This song alone MADE Dolarhyde and Manhunter. The creators of Red Dragon should be ashamed of themselves.
