Kanchome, Kid, and Momon are my favorites. They may not be the strongest, but they definitly try the hardest. And they all have thier moments of pure kickassery (though it is to bad Momon's was never animated and Kanchome's best moments were also never animated due to early ending series).

They DO actually die, for the most part. All who are sent back to the demon world loose their bodies and exist only as floating souls. Only the new King of the Mamodo can decide whether or not they get bodies back and live, or simply die and are erased forever.

This is learned by the main characters only after there are just 10 remaining Mamodo in the competition (their books tell them). This, of course sets up the nihilistic villain of the final arc perfectly.
