@indycolts4 The MGS theme has a quite similar first melody (here played first by the clarinet) and an even more similar second melody (here first the oboe). They're not identical, but as many as two melodies being as similar as in this case would be a super-duper unlikely coincidence. Or done on purpose. :P

The japanese always steal things from westerners and refine them. Uetmatsu of Final Fantasy ripped off the movie the Rock for his Dollet demo alternative track. He ripped off sequences from Terra's theme from the good the bad and the ugly too.
And for you weeabo fangirls who want to bring up sergio leone ripping off a fistful of dollars from yojimbo, know that yojimbo first ripped off an American novel called Red Harvest.
@DarkestSymbiote look, fanbitch weeabo... I never said specifically that russia was in the west. Nice try. Notice how the examples I gave are western? So please just stfu and think before you think you have a charge to bring against me.
@DarkestSymbiote And if you think Kojima didn't know what was going on, I refer you to the character art from the original Metal gear. You know, the one where Big Boss is a rip off of Sean Connery's likeness and Snake is a rip off of Kyle Reese from Terminator.

Story made plenty of sense to me but kind of agree that the old RE camera style was good but the 3rd person view brought it to a new level.
@filipeflower Well, I was originally going to say that it was just a coincidence that the two themes have similar motifs, but then I listened to it and realised that, yeah, Konami definitely borrowed from it.

It's obvious that it's too similar, but like someone already said, as a composer you go through thousands of pieces, and some remain subconscient, to the point that you start making a tune and when the first three notes match, your mind does the rest without you objectively remembering the piece.I have no doubts that they didn't know before it was actually unvelied (in a non-fashion way to be honest). The thing we can all agree with, is that Sviridov got the recognition he deserved, even if late

I don't think it is an exaggeration. There are so many parts of this piece that have the same rhythm, the same repetition, or even the exact same intervals as the MGS theme. I think 1:25 is the most telling part; though most of what comes before it is so very similar as well. Hell, even the opening three notes have identical intervals to the opening notes of the main MGS theme.
It's vaguely similiar, I see. But that doesn't mean he actually took this music. I don't think Hideo Kojima or anyone from his staff is incapable of inventing a theme song or any other piece of music (they're professionals, you know). Coincidences can happen and just because two people have similar ideas, that doesn't mean they actually stole things from each other. I created a story (for my comic book) about a bunch of creatures that gain life with a green liquid, but I didn't steal T.M.N.T.
@TheHauntedAngel Past the point of coincidence? So the themes are similar and that means they can't be a coincidence? So if I make a book about rotting decaying corpses coming back from life and I learn about zombies later on in my life that doesn't make it a coincidence?
I think they're more than just a little similar. The amount of intervals that are actually identical, which are also in an identical rhythm, make this more than coincidence. The person I quoted is wrong: it's more than just the '2nd beat of the 3rd bar'.
@HaipaYazoo No, but if you made a book about rotting decaying corpses coming to life, and your main characters are cops and one of them wears sunglasses and is actually evil, and he later drinks this potion that gives him superhuman powers, you'd have a hard time finding anyone who will believe you if you say that it was just coincidence that your book just happens to be just like Resident Evil.
A little imitation is fine. But there's a limit before it becomes plagiarism.
@HaipaYazoo Listen to the melodies at 0.14 and 1.25. You will see that not only a melody is similar, but 2. In fact mgs theme has that second piece I told too, and it's really similar... Anyway, there are of course some differences. Both amazing
Because if there is a genuine copyright problem then whoever is taking Kojima to court can claim that he's continuing to make money from someone else's work. Whether or not he is is a different issue, but if the people suing him have a credible case, then we may not see the songs in the HD collection. A shame, really.
@TheHauntedAngel " but if the people suing him have a credible case, then we may not see the songs in the HD collection. A shame, really." actually no. There was no legal proceedings with this as they never officially sued. That and they didn't change mgs1 on the ps3 release of the playstation classic. So since they aren't actually doing anything. That and konami realizes just how much backlash there would be fro gamers.
To be fair, most of the song is familiar. In some places it's the overall sound but in many places the note progression is practically the same. I wouldn't go as far as down right theft though. Possibly inspirational.
I can't even see how they could make a Metal Gear Solid film without it. Georgy Sviridov would likely be forced to approve by Solid Snake himself. All Spy's need themes, and I place Snake's up there with James Bond, passing Mission Impossible and The Jason Bourne tune.
What I find most amazing is how things like this are found. I mean, with the advent of the internet, it's become all but impossible at this point to get away with plagiarism. Music, movies, text, all of it can be digitized from recorded history and kept alive through it.
It's sad that Iwase clearly borrowed from it, but at the same time he made it his own unique piece. Still, proper credit should be given to Sviridov in future updates.
This Soviet score was pretty good. But when it was rewritten to sound more militant and aggressive, it becomes even better. All this score needed was ninjas and assault rifles.
this is truly beautiful along with the metal gear solid theme i love both i just wish they settled this and/or!!!! collaborated to make the best mgs theme ever :)
All Konami has to do is ask permission to play this in their Metal Gear games. Just in the credits, put this artist and say it's a remixes piece of the original.
I have such mixed emotions from this whole Metal Gear Solid plagiarism ordeal. I love this music, absolutely love it. But since my early adolescent years I've always identified it as an uplifting/patriotic melody because of Metal Gear (and of course because of Harry Gregson-Williams' wonderful rendition). Now I find myself hating Tappi Iwase for being such an obvious thief, and also resenting becoming so fond of the uncredited derivation that is his version.
@BOSSMK23 An obvious thief? Really? It's only one bit of the song that's similar(starts at 0:40) and it's just the tune. Tappy could have heard it in his youth and hummed it without even knowing its origin. That sort of thing happens all the time in music and it's called inspiration. Plagiarism is a calculated act of stealing someone's work. It's not even accurate to call the MGS Tappy's version of this song. It's about 30% similar.
@SolidSnakeRules Listen to the metal gear theme again, it's clearly similar, and it would not be the first time that some Japanese composers (not to mention yoko kanno for example) do plagiarism or a bit too much of inspiration.
By the way I love the metal gear series and I love the theme, but just to be fair I think Sviridov must own the credit for the MGS theme...
i personally think he was aware of them using it but he let it slide and didn't do anything about it so that he could bring it up after it was extremely popular so that he could gain publicity for his work. if that's what he actually did i'm not saying he's a bad person... just a very very smart one to think up such a plan.
@MariusChamberlin The composer for MGS2 likely experienced cryptomnesia when he made that theme. Sviridov's "Winter Road" was made in in the 1970's, meaning it predates Metal Gear for the MSX (and pretty much all video games entirely). MGS games stopped using the melody because it is still under copyright law, and had been 'used' without permission.
@Kladyos Pretty sure the MGS2 composer is different than the MGS composer. The MGS composer created the motif that is very similar to Winter Road. The MGS2 composer (Harry Gregson-Williams) based his composition off the theme established with MGS.
@msampson3d My apologies. Still he used the work of someone else without crediting them by proxy (he was in the clear legally). Thank you for making me realize this.
@TechnoTechnoBurger The whole metal gear solid series, pretty much lays out the illuminati plan. I did an analysis of MGS 2 on my own and it's very interesting the hypothesis I came up with. Looking at it symbolically-Raiden clearly represents the masses of sheep, for example and the colnel represents the unseen authority/puppet masters the story is also about the flow of information and poses the question of realities-an ode to the notion of holographic universe, perhaps?
@TechnoTechnoBurger the members of the patriots seem to be a representation of the 13 families. It has been said that they put their plans in movies for all to see; but so that many will not believe-the same seems to be true for games. Look at the stuff in Final fantasy 13. Also there is the part where the prez admits that it is all a show and even the term new world order is used-though it isn't new-they're just being more overt about it now.
Obviously, this melody is a very powerful meme that can extend itself from Russian classical music to a videogame series and continue extending itself to that fan-base as well. Scary stuff!
notice how this is A Russian involved with a snow themed song. and MGS being a guy along with Russian involvement with lots of snow themes? seriously this game has too many coincidences with reality. maybe it really happened!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

@m4a153 who cares really? So what mgs characters are a rip off? Who cares that? Everything is a rip off of something... and MGS is a excellent game and its all that matters. And MGS made this music famous, so its not a bad thing.

It's not just Japan, mind you. There are a lot of beloved creations from America that happen to be ripped off of other sources as well. Batman seemed to come from Zorro, and funnily enough, The Lion King had a plot based of off Hamlet, and a design based of off "Kimba The White Lion", which came from Japan.
Not many things are original nowadays, mind you. If you look closely at most things out, you'll find that elements of it are borrowed from other sources. And on the whole, it

Heavy Rain's music is a lot more similar to "The Other Side" in Gattaca and you don't see them suing out of nowhere, do you? I mean, really, I'd like to know exactly what Konami did after this came to light, because I find it a little hard to believe that whoever owned the original music was charging so much for it that Konami couldn't just play some minor royalties for later games.

TheHauntedAngel 6 months ago
@TheHauntedAngel Yeah, youre right. I have to say that mgs would be great also with this
27Markarian 5 months ago
@HaipaYazoo No, but if you made a book about rotting decaying corpses coming to life, and your main characters are cops and one of them wears sunglasses and is actually evil, and he later drinks this potion that gives him superhuman powers, you'd have a hard time finding anyone who will believe you if you say that it was just coincidence that your book just happens to be just like Resident Evil.
A little imitation is fine. But there's a limit before it becomes plagiarism.
Sanguiluna 5 months ago
@Sanguiluna There is, but this doesn't seem to be the case. At most, it's borderlined, but that's just my personal preference.
HaipaYazoo 5 months ago
@HaipaYazoo Listen to the melodies at 0.14 and 1.25. You will see that not only a melody is similar, but 2. In fact mgs theme has that second piece I told too, and it's really similar... Anyway, there are of course some differences. Both amazing
27Markarian 5 months ago
@TheHauntedAngel why wouldn't they be in the HD versions? They're the exact same games, just in HD.
sunset261 4 months ago
@sunset261
Because if there is a genuine copyright problem then whoever is taking Kojima to court can claim that he's continuing to make money from someone else's work. Whether or not he is is a different issue, but if the people suing him have a credible case, then we may not see the songs in the HD collection. A shame, really.
TheHauntedAngel 4 months ago

Тем более, что музыкальных тем вполне могло быть и больше, да и создавались они далеко не перед самым релизом игрушки, но в финал вышла именно наша, любимая, от Свиридова! =)

BOSSMK23 1 year ago
@BOSSMK23 An obvious thief? Really? It's only one bit of the song that's similar(starts at 0:40) and it's just the tune. Tappy could have heard it in his youth and hummed it without even knowing its origin. That sort of thing happens all the time in music and it's called inspiration. Plagiarism is a calculated act of stealing someone's work. It's not even accurate to call the MGS Tappy's version of this song. It's about 30% similar.
SolidSnakeRules 8 months ago

@m4a153 doesn't even happen to be a bad thing either. Ever heard of the phrase: "Imitation is the best form of flattery"?
So yeah, please consider the fact that while Kojima may have borrowed things from many other sources, keep in mind that:
1. Many other people have done it before him, and many people still will, and
2. It doesn't always have to be bad. Sometimes it can become something all on its own. :D

Wha......that's the Metal Gear Solid Main Theme!? It's already composed!
MariusChamberlin 1 year ago
@MariusChamberlin The composer for MGS2 likely experienced cryptomnesia when he made that theme. Sviridov's "Winter Road" was made in in the 1970's, meaning it predates Metal Gear for the MSX (and pretty much all video games entirely). MGS games stopped using the melody because it is still under copyright law, and had been 'used' without permission.
Kladyos 1 year ago
@Kladyos Hahah no I know that, I was quoting Raiden. You know? "That's Metal Gear? It's already active!!" etc....
MariusChamberlin 1 year ago
@Kladyos Pretty sure the MGS2 composer is different than the MGS composer. The MGS composer created the motif that is very similar to Winter Road. The MGS2 composer (Harry Gregson-Williams) based his composition off the theme established with MGS.

FUCKING ILLUMINATI
TechnoTechnoBurger 1 year ago
@TechnoTechnoBurger The whole metal gear solid series, pretty much lays out the illuminati plan. I did an analysis of MGS 2 on my own and it's very interesting the hypothesis I came up with. Looking at it symbolically-Raiden clearly represents the masses of sheep, for example and the colnel represents the unseen authority/puppet masters the story is also about the flow of information and poses the question of realities-an ode to the notion of holographic universe, perhaps?
IronBobcat2278 1 year ago
@TechnoTechnoBurger the members of the patriots seem to be a representation of the 13 families. It has been said that they put their plans in movies for all to see; but so that many will not believe-the same seems to be true for games. Look at the stuff in Final fantasy 13. Also there is the part where the prez admits that it is all a show and even the term new world order is used-though it isn't new-they're just being more overt about it now.
IronBobcat2278 1 year ago
This piece would have been so much more fitting then the "original" theme. They should have just paid for the licsencing
IronBobcat2278 1 year ago
Obviously, this melody is a very powerful meme that can extend itself from Russian classical music to a videogame series and continue extending itself to that fan-base as well. Scary stuff!
