this is one of the first records I ever owned. Was always curious about Gamma Goochee. What is his real name and did he make any other records? He sounds like someone from New Orleans.
I like the Monkees version, where they just let go and "throw a wobbler" to break the tension of the more straight material on theiir first LP, and it's ridiculous and funny. This version's fine also, as it's completely different and funky and a perfect party tune (and the harmonica is a nice touch) to dance to, and it's fun in its own way as well.
@MrJamesrnolan According to an interview the Monkees gave on the Dr. Demento show back in 1987, they were supposed to record the song straight, but they just couldn't manage it when they got in the studio. I'm thankful they released the silly recording, since it's a lot of fun to listen to.
But this version by Gamma Goochee is really a neat recording, too.
The record label for this record, Colpix, and the Monkees' record label, Colgems, were both subsidiaries of Screen Gems/Columbia Pictures. Screen Gems was the television outfit that put together the Monkees.
Obviously originally influenced by the Rufus Thomas hit "Walking the Dog".
Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart ( who were the original songwriters hired for The Monkees project ) wrote this. I had no idea there was an earlier version until now. Thanks for posting.
copycat the monkees wrote that song grr i am disgraced i have a tribute band to the monkees and on my behalf i said thats outrageous but ours is much funnier
The Gamma Goochie had 3 45 records on Colpix, and one on MGM.

Now that's cool-a Rolling Stones/Johnny Rivers style.
The Monkees version never did much for me, but this sounds very good !
Good post!
