I only saw the Stones once - when Brian Jones was still with them in the days of "Sweet Lady Jane" , and I will never forget the impression I got of Bill Wyman , who I had never paid much attention to before !
He was a presence that radiated an amazing power - I was struck with astonishment , and I always paid attention to him ever since , as the years went by !
@matias1962 En Silver Train y Jumping Jack Flash toca Keith Richards el bajo. Keith es bastante basto tocando el bajo, pero en algunas canciones suena bien: JJF, Sympaty For the Devil, Pretty beat Up.... En otras canciones, Keith simplemente la caga: Casino Boogie, Soul Survivor, Live with Me, etc...
@matias1962 BUt everything Bill played was much superior and totally underrated. Hot Stuff, the whole 1981 tour or any tour really. He was the perfect bass player. Every single song he played on.
bill was very classy and had a great feel as a bass player, i feel sad that he was so overshadowed by the glitter twins...brian too....and even charlie...u watch him play live in the old recordings on tv...and its like he's bored out of his mind...but then again...charlie was always llke that lol
@BobBerkeley From what i read, the frets were worn on a second hand bass he bought so he removed them with the intention of replacing them, but found it sounded better without the frets so he left them off.
@wiecbb on feb.4 2011 I think a bassist can also get known, as John Paul Jones and John Entwhistle are, for their fantastic bass playing. Neither of them are lead vocalists, or do they go nuts on stage, either. Of course, their names aren't quite as well known as the lead singers are of their respective groups. More so, in the circle of musicians I would think. Thank you.
@hkyoutoob I absolutely agree. Mark Andes of Spirit, Firefall, JoJo Gunne and Heart, to name a few of the groups who benefited from his innovative yet rock-solid bass lines, is a classic example...
B.W. is the "COOLEST" Bass Player on Earth! very simple bass play'n hardly ever moved around on stage & always had a smile when possible though ( w/ his short scale basses) he keeped his rhythm in the pocket along w/ C.W. on drums who held dwn the steady beat, they were the dynamic duo of the STONES! =o]
MY FAVORITE STONE! Bill You rock man...u kept it down and were rock solid all those years...very underated bass player....i can only imagine how hard it would be to have to share the stage with such ego's as mick and keith...i mean...i can see y he got tired of it....what was great was that he was afraid to go..."i have enough thanx"
I totally agree with you . But it was Andrew Oldham who created the Jaggar Richards vs the others . Wyman is such a great guy and musician. I'm reading Stone alone, if you still haven't do it ,it's fantastic.
I always admired Bill's bass lines. He contributed to the Stones sound more than they give him credit for. He kept it simple. He stayed on time with Charlie's drumming and stayed in the shadows allowing Mick and Keith the spotlight.
@PAULLONDEN ??? Jagger never miked their "bad boy" image, it was Brian Jones
, he was the one who started the Long Hair /Not Dressing with same uniforms / Not conforming to society / Having sex with underaged girls/ Pregnanting chicks and dumping them / Drinking a lot and taking plenty of drugs
@PAULLONDEN Youre so right. The Stones themself know this .Why do they hide their other bassist in any way.He was a body-part of them and a really great rock-bassist.
i really like Bill. he complained about the Fans mistreats done by policemen. he said " the public don't deserve this" and he was the only one that did this.

I miss Bill. If they go out in 2012 and do their last tour, he needs to come back into the fold for at least one show.

Is it true that Bill Wyman made the first fretless electric bass in the early 1960s? By pulling the frets out of his bass?

in general bass players are likely to be overlooked or underestimated.
the only way a bass player can get known is to be the lead singer as well (aka sting...macca)...or being F#*#ckn nuts on stage (Flea)

People tend to underestimate Wyman's contribution to The Stones.
Especialy in the early days when Jagger milked their 'bad boy ' press to the limit,he was an integral part of their image.
Untill '76 he looked just as cool as
Jagger & Richards.
He got a lot of slag from the 'Glimmer Twins' for being too straight.
Yet,Wyman was wise, for him it was
Sex & Rock'n'Roll.
He has to be given credit for not wanting to be part anymore,of the cabaret act ,that is The Rolling Stones today.
