Most of historicians agree that the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been useless to the end of the war. Japan was destoryed.

U.S.A. knew that the Soviet Union attacked Japan at a place of Potsdam Declaration.
Truman should have understood that Japan was driven into the surrender immediately if the Soviet Union intervened.
Then the answer is simple why Truman used an atom bomb.

What strikes me as funny is Japan in WW2 ordered its civilians in Okinawa to commit sucide when the US soldiers where comming (Japanease soldiers even killed te civilians for them) is that in the future the Japanease gov. made textbooks saying that the people in Okinawa did it withou orders when it was truly wrong. The US warned japan of the bomb and when they dropped it japan still refused to surrender so the second one was dropped 3 days later. If the japanese had the bomb they would have dropped it the first day and every single day after that.

@dm001jp the US did not know about the radiation at the time and waited two weeks trying to bargain with japan before dropping it. They did suspect some spread though so Hiroshima and later at Nagasaki were chosen because they were isolated and had lower population, if we dropped it on Tokyo the numbers would be a hundred times that.

If the bomb had been dropped here, then we would have put whatever country bombed us into the stone age (they couldn't have developed more bombs then we did, giving us time to push before another strike). However, considering they didn't surrender after the bomb was demonstrated on a major city, I seriously doubt they would have surrendered if the bomb was demonstrated over the ocean. On 8-6-45, the "Little Boy" bomb claimed over 120,000 CIVILIAN lives.
