A beautiful rendition. That suit really doesn't suit him, though. Although I get that it is relevant for the 'I love each feather and each spangle' lyric.
This is so much more emotional than the "studio" or TV performance version. Live is often so. Loved it, appreciate his I(for lack of a better word) gyrations. Bravo! Bravo! Encore! ;}
He surely is one of the greatest musical singers. This version of "I am what I am" is very Broadway during the 50s, so magical. I'd like to see a duet between John Barrowman and George Hearn, that would be awesome!!!
@federicotedeschi they did do a song together for putting it together, at least i think it was george hamm, just type in john barrowman putting it together and it should be one of the results/
@mmcharacter1 & @federicotedeschi - John Barrowman & George Hearn had a few duets in Stephen Sondheim's anthology musical called "Putting It Together". It was performed in LA and on Broadway in the 1998-2000 timeframe. There is an official dvd available called "Putting It Together" which can be ordered from the usual online stores (HMV, Amazon, Play.com, etc.).As I recall, George Hearn played Albin/Zaza in the original run of "La Cage aux Folles" on Broadway nearly 30 years ago.
i hate that he sings this song. he does not have the right voice for it. yes, he sings beautifully, but this song is not written for him type of singing. just leave it alone.
ooops the Tyskerudify comment was supposed to be on my account, i forgot it was on my brother's....
but this is now one of my favorite show tunes, one that really means a lot to me, because this describes how i feel a lot. no, i'm not a guy that dresses up in drag, but i still find it hard to be myself sometimes. this song is a song people can relate with, and i know it's one i'll listen to on a day when i don't feel great about myself.
I totally agree this song is so amazing because it can speak to so many different people and it resonates so well with the battle we each have to fight to be our selves
I love the way John sings this song, his performance is so full of life and fun. As I haven't seen La Cage Aux Folles I have nothing to compare it with.
Great song for John as John, but he is not old enough to play zaza yet. when zaza looks in the mirror and says "this tired old face that I see" come on there is nothing tired about john. But that's show biz.
I saw him in it on thurs and would have to say that before i would have had to agree with you but its amazing to see what a bit of makeup can do, from the 5th row back he looked like an old drag queen in mascara anyway, go see it its fab =D
The other thing that bothers me. He is jumping around too much. This song is sung as Zaza has just been informed he is supposed to leave for the dinner party. He is heartbroken, defiant, and rejoicing in his own identity, surely, but not quite so energetic in a bouncy way.
I would agree completely with you if this were Zaza singing... but it isn't, it's John singing as (and about) himself. We haven't yet seen how he will sing it when he plays Zaza, when he's singing the song in the context of the story. I do agree that he may look too young to be a fading drag queen though, he's simply beautiful. We'll see...
great performance, although I'm used to Zaza having a deeper voice, which gives the song a different element. other than that, I love him. Look up George Hearn or Gary Beach doing the song. They are the original Zaza's from the OBC and Broadway revival.
I am not quite familiar with John's work both as an actor and a performer (he is relatively unknown in my native France), yet I was completely blown away by his rendition here !!! What a charisma ! And such a powerful voice... His final ten-second note left me SPEECHLESS ! Bravo !!
He did this one towards the end, and I remeber sitting there thoughout the entire thing thinking "please do I am what I am, plaes do I am what I am" and then he did and I was like, hell yeah!
Sigh....... :]

We can all take a cue from this song. Even those of us who aren't drag queens. xD And having John singing it, if anything, just makes it better.
Love from US.
