I would say that 99% of drum majors mark time while conducting. Your feet are supposed to mimic the feet of the ensemble. When they are double time you mark time double time, when they halt you halt. It's drum major 101.
Actually rolling backwards is much more efficient than up on the toes. It keeps the look of the ensemble the same from forward march. At a certain step size it turns into an up on the toes style anyway. Up on the toes is horrible for slow tempos, and most bands look like a deer trying to stand for the first time doing it. I guess both have their pros and cons.
I was in the Pride that year and remember that performance well!
