@ROCChinese1911 A more Christ-like behavior is to NOT hate evil. Augustine isn't Christ. Here is the thing: love God and have your heart broken by evil. There is no need to retaliate with hate. It may be Augustinian, but hate is not Christian.
Sin is like a cancer. If my friend is dying of cancer am I not allowed to hate the cancer that is killing him without hating him? Of course I am ! While I appreciate your irenic approach, it is important to "ˆspeak the truth" as Paul says even while do it "in love". The truth is sin kills, separates, divides, destroys. Yeah, I think that's something I can hate because of what it does to me and the people I love. Sorry, Matthew, I'm afraid you're wrong on this one.
In my understanding, hate is a sin, even hating sin. This is different than "speaking the truth in love" which is very important. And you are right that sin kills separates and destroys. But if you hate it, then sin will have a wide open door to walk through. I think the only option before us in the face of sin is to speak the truth and weep for sin, not speak the truth and hate the sin.
"Love the sinner, hate the sin" is not even in the Bible. Christ is all about forgiveness, and even when our cheeks are striked, we are only to turn the other cheel so it can be striked as well. No mention of hate from Christ anywhere.
I enjoyed the video. I have watched a bunch now, however I will have to disagree on this one. I feel like what we do does not define who we are. Who we are is in Christ, however we still have a sinful nature. So I do separate what I do with who I am, and If God hates sin, shouldn't I. And If God loves the sinner should I? I feel like the fence we could cross is just accepting sin, and not really addressing it. I understand what ur saying. good to see stuff like this on youtube. Keep it up.
Father, thank you for this posting. This is saying I too shiver when I hear, although I used to embrace it as sort of a middle ground. I've come to realize, though, that it's really a cop-out. Sin is committed by bodily creatures, so, how can you separate the sin from the sinner? This was actually part of what led me to the Epsicopal Church...thank you.
Thank you for another wonderful video just wish it was as easy said as done when the sinner is not a friend but someone that actually tries hard to make your life as difficult as they can every chance they get.
"It is quite proper to resist and attack the system, but to resist and attack its author is tantamount to resisting and attacking oneself. For we are all tarred with the same brush, and are children of one and the same Creator, and such the divine powers within us are infinite. To slight a single human being is to slight those divine powers, and thus to harm not only that being but with him the whole world."
well, i have to admit, i'm a lot like Jehosephat (bad temper...ruins scrabble games a lot, and jumps up into chandeliers when frustrated)...but the lesson you gave is very profound, and yet simple- love one another.
it's best to leave the judgement of sin to God, after all even Jesus himself forgave the woman who was about to be publicly stoned for her sin. as St. Augustine says: "love and do what you will".
So funny. I laughed so hard. It is hard to say you have Christ in your heart, and still have a place to hate. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as your self. I love the way you powerfully bring truth in a easy to understand package.
I enjoy your brand of Chritianity. I'm very concerned about the others. I'm not sure yours can exist without endorsing the validity of harmful interpretations.
Father Matthew, thank you for touching on this subject. This was something that I had problems with for a while. The season of Lent is a wonderful time for us all to re-evaluate ourselves. Thank you so much for posting this video.
I don't see anything wrong with that statement. St. Augustine, who coined the phrase, has an excellent explanation that, to me, makes more sense.
"the man who lives by God's standards and not by man's, must needs be a lover of the good, and it follows that he must hate what is evil."

Father,
just curious but isn't death the separation of soul and host (body).

@funnyguytoo That is more of a Greek concept than a Jewish/Christian understanding

I particularly like this one. Not just for the message, which isVG, but the presentation is as well.

I don't know if Jesus was the Son of God or not, but I'm guessing if he was, this is exactly the kind of guy he had in mind for his P.R. department.

I definitely agree that hate has no place in Christianity. However, the idea of separating action and the body could be debated.
This was a very thought provoking video. It's a shame there aren't many like this on Youtube.

That was beautiful.
Especially when you consider you tortured that poor monkey by laughing just as you won.
You ought to be the one to ask for forgivenss & perhaps the church should take that stance for their past without being a pansie though.
Luke 12:5 is explained by Matthew 10:28 & no one has the power of forgiveness unto salvation save Jesus or God per Psalms 51:17.
The arm of the Lord is not short for He is mighty to save.
