I think the aircraft is a Turkish Airlines A321 because if it is THY, they don't use 757's

forgive the ignorance b/c i'm not a pilot, but is that kind of maneuver legal/polite in terms of aviation? what are the "rules" for overtaking someone in midair? are there any?

It is not ignorance but in fact a good question. So in terms of aviation rules this is not an overtaking maneuver but our aircraft just flying faster on the same airway below the airliner under consideration of the cumpulsory spacing. The spacing is subject to the airspace in which the aircraft is flying. However, still a cool view ;)
