  • This is my favorite Bacharach/David composition. Dionne Warwick sings the breathtaking definitive version, but Dusty handles it quite well here. Poor Burt should stick to writing songs and leave the microphone alone.

  • Without doubt Dusty was one of the all time greatest singers....sadly missed.

  • they didn't call her The White Queen Of Soul for nothing ........ she just wrapped a song up and made love to it !!!! beautiful

  • Burt's a great writer. Can't sing worth a shit, but boy can he pen a classic. Funny how he skipped the second half of the first verse in this rendition. "A room is still a room, even when there's nothing there but gloom". Love his writing, but his vocal ability is a friggin JOKE!

  • They would have made beautiful children...

  • FU 1%

  • Dusty adds something to this wonderful song that no one else does. A remarkable version of a timeless classic

  • incredible lyrics, truth, plain and simple

  • I love the honesty in his phrasing as he sings the first verse,

    and Dusty is a treasure.

  • When was this recorded?

  • @carmelo3750

    September 12, 1970

  • @Plutootjes- Sept 12, 1970--- my 6th birthday... nice to know!

  • Brook Benton, the first to sing this classic from the 1964 film of the same name, did not really have a hit with this song. It reached #75 on the Billboard chart in 1964. Mr. Bacharach recorded two versions himself: an instrumental version in 1965 and a vocal (I believe his first full vocal) in 1967.

  • Burt has a special feeling for the lyric of Hal David that who cares that he has no great voice - he puts the song over and I love it! Dusty was the best! RIP... We loved you so much and your one of a kind voice. GREAT!

  • @ManagerGuy1 Kind of like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire - they didn't have to be great singers - they knew how to put over a song (and of course, they knew how to dance beyond anyone else - just as Burt is the songwriter supreme!)

  • @recovering16 Well said! I agree. Thank you.

  • I wish that Burt would not have sung because he is crap at singing, and he seems to be an attention seeking twat. Good songwriter though, and Hal David's lyrics are amazing.

  • awesome

  • OMG, I didn't realized that Burt Bacharach is so handsome at that time, the song always be evergreen :D

  • I'm not being a hater, but i see a big difference when I hear Luther Vandross and Jacob Lusk sings this song...It seems like this one is just lacking the soul..I'm just saying

  • @OnlyChild28- if you think "soul" amounts to melisma and shouting, then you'd be right. But soul is a lot more than that. Keep in mind the song was already 20 years old when Luther first sang it. Dionne Warwick sang the original, and she pretty much sang it straight as well.

  • @mnmcv1 good point...I like the ladys part of this version...but I still think luther just gave this song a little more life when he sang...he made u feel it...

  • I was blessed to find this performance on a DVD of her live performances recently! I will eventually wear a laser hole thru the disc on this one!!!

  • It is impossible to listen to anyone else sing this song.

  • This is amazing it is truly a privilege to listen to this!

  • Burt is one of the greatest composers of all times, but singing is not his thang... his intro was awful. Thank God Dusty was there to save the day!

  • Why such a long intro??? Music begins at 1:45

  • Talk about emotion, I was nearly in tears as she sang. She would go anywhere to find a good song, leaving the "Springfields" was a good move Dusty.

  • The best version of this song... EVER! Eat your heart out, Luther.

  • @lorraineagee He can't he's dead....

  • Oh my God I will never get tired of this song.

  • Loved this woman. Another gem taken away from us way to early.

  • @skipper8257 .......From that dreaded breast cancer.

  • The best song, and the best singer in the world. Period...

  • dusty has the sexier voice ever

  • What a powerhouse, Dusty was great. We will never see this stuff ever again. The greats are gone. Thanks for sharing a beautiful piece.

  • dusty and burt ... it doesn't get any better than this!

  • chinese curls part deux (:

  • Don't sing, Burt

  • A wonderful rendition but the greatest, I promise you all, is Pearl Bailey's. It was her favorite of her recordings and it best captures the full meaning of this heartbreaking song.

  • O.M.G. .....nothing better than Burt & Dusty.....I don't care if he can't sing......he wrote the most gorgeous music....I listen to him all the time

  • Charming chat to warm up, and a killer performance by Dusty.

She said years later that she was quite proud of this performance, and that it took real courage to hit all the right notes with Burt sitting there. This is a tough song to sing, but she makes it look easy, caressing each word and making the melody soar. Thanks, Plutootjes, for this wonderful treasure.

  • I cringe when Burt sings his own songs. But, when a siren like Dusty interprets one of Burt's songs, I forgive him for not having a voice.

    John-Niles of California

  • Thanks .

  • two masters at the height of their powers...

  • Awesome song and Talents !

  • Love it

  • This is easily the best version of this Bachrach tune EVER. And live and in person (no lip sychning!) and with the composer right there next to her at the piano.

The sensitivty, the emotion, the vulnerability--can not be matched.

Dusty was one of a kind--she will never be replaced.

  • Dear LuvDusty it's not . . . really, it's not. Luther Vandross owns this song. I mean he REALLY owns this song. Dusty did her thing but Luther repossessed it.

  • I don't think anyone "owns" the song.

I love Luther and I do think he is one of the best male interpreters of Bacharach for his generation.

But for the previous generation..it was Dionne Warwick and in this case with "A House Is Not A Home", I think this is the best LIVE version of this song.

Maybe Luther had the best recording?

  • @LuvDusty2007 Well, I like Dionne on Burt Bacharach/Hal David productions.

  • EyeCon2U, after reading a couple of commentgs on how much better Luther Vandross' version was I decided to check it out and I have to say..sorry but I completely disagree. His is good. Dusty's is amazing.

  • @lasktguy

Sorry. I still your wrong. Dusty and Burt's version is really sweet. But, Luther convey's the emotion of the song a lot better.

  • @cartdcdonut no, I'm not wrong and neither are you. Opinions can't be right or wrong because they are just that..opinions, not facts. You're opinion is Luthor shows more feeling. My opinion is that Dusty does.

  • @LuvDusty2007 --ABSOLUTELY--she owned this from the first note, much better than Dione Warwick

  • Oh, Dusty, we hardly knew you...and then you were gone. "Darling have a heart; don't let one mistake keep us apart." Always in our hearts, Dusty...ALWAYS! xo BklynBoy

  • Dusty!! XXXXXXX

  • One of the premier vocalists of all time. There has never been anyone like her. This is one of the greatest vocal performances of all time by any artist in my opinion. Simply stunning.

  • The two of them are absolutely charming when they're telling that story, but not a word of it is true, except maybe the length of the cab ride from the airport. He didn't write Wishing and Hoping for her and came out only a few months after she started her solo career. I don't mind a bit of myth-making if it leads to perfomances like this, though.

  • Also adding to her range, she could sing ANY style of music as if it was second nature to her. Not many singers can do that.

  • And don't forget that she recorded and sang in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Italian.

Can you imagine any contemporary pop singer doing that successfully?

  • I did not know this about her many Talents ., What Spanish songs ?

  • She sang a wonderful version of "El Baion" and recorded an excellent cover of "La Bamba" as well.

  • Do a search in You Tube for

    DUSTY SPRINGFIELD and ANNA

    Check it out!

  • no one my friend no one!!

  • Oh Dusty she just melts my heart away....she's the best! Her emotions as well as her style and her loyalty to her fans -- she was truly a blessing. Sorry to see the 60s end -- the 70s were just so passe!

  • She might not have had the range many great singers have but when she was at her best like here nobody interpeted the songs from an emotional and performance standpont the way Dusty did. This performance is a gem. Spetaclular.

  • Not sure what you mean? Burt B himself said that Dusty had tremendous range - both of the notes she could sing and the emotions she could convey. On some of the Dusty in Memphis tracks her voice is stratospheric.

  • First of all probably my favorite Female singer ever, rich syrupy voice and wonderful styling, ability to 'put over a song' when performing, super cool 60s style and the looks! But definitely not great range when you think of Striesand or Mariah Carey Minnie Riverton. Not outstanding compared to the greats in that realm. Her greatness lay in other areas.

  • By the way this performance is a gem that almost knocked me off my seat when I first saw it but if you haven't seen her 24 Hours from Tulsa youtube its also spectacular. Also "Y Rascals' song 'how can I be sure is not far behind the other 2. Appears to have hit her peak in late 60s TV days. Start of 70s she was still super great but the decade saw her decline. Even great talents are just human.

  • The 24 Hours Rrom Tulsa I'm talking about is the 67 TV performance not the 64 recording utube which also sounds good but y have to see her performance which is perfection in my humble opinion.

  • I'd say Dusty had at least a three octave range, probably more, which is considered very wide. A larger range, such as Ripperton had, can be impressive technically, but is somewhat superfluous as far as performances needs go. How many times does a singer encounter a five octave melody?

  • Absolutely. Just watch a few of her BBC shows and you can see her voice reach down in the depths, soar high with a belt and even higher with a sublime falsetto. Add her ability to powerfully convey emotional highs and lows and you have quite an enviable singing range to behold.

  • Vocal range is one thing and nice, but that alone does not a good singer make. Stylistic and emotional range, which Dusty had to spare, is what makes a true Pop singer brilliant!

  • The person who added that fake laughter...I just wanna punch them...it almost ruins the clip...but Dusty and Burts fantastic performance saves it!

  • I've heard a few versions of this song (including Streisand's and the Luther Vandross one), but I like it by Dusty the best!!! I think she conveys the emotion of this song (or any other) like no one else!!!!!

  • Will never ever die in my heart!

  • Absolute bliss.

  • At her best. Marvellous.

  • This is, quite simply, one of Dusty's finest ever TV performances. Thank you so much for posting - it's heaven to be able to watch it complete and uninterrupted.

  • Beautiful song!

  • Burt was just as good as Paul McCartney, John Lennon, & Brian Wilson. And Bob Dylan, although Bob was more from a lyrical standpoint. It makes life so much better when there's songwriters like this in life. Thank you so much. Thank you!! :)

  • Oh I dunno....Hal David is no slouch as a lyricist

  • We love you Burt, but please don´t sing...

  • I know, lol! He sang nicely at first and then near the end I just wanted to hear Dusty ;-)

  • Tom Jobin com certeza abrendeu tudo com Mister Bacharah

  • Dusty died about a month before my dad died. I will always love you Dusty, there will never be another female recording artist like you!

  • Burt + Dusty = MAGIC !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Was this in 1969?

  • 1970.

On TV program "Another Evening with Burt Bacharach".

  • Thanks :) I always appreciate a response :)

  • You are welcome !

  • Only Burt (genius) could do lyrics like "a chair is not a house"

  • Crazystarsguy: Burt is a genious alright, but he never wrote any lyrics, his lyricist Hal David wrote it all...

  • IMHO the phrasing of the lyrics is the star of the show - even over the excellent lyrics. And with the superb and compelling melodies it all comes together as an amazing collaboration.

  • God she was pretty , and what a voice

  • wow i neva knew that Dusty Springfield had this song before Luther...Luthers is by far better(sorry if it offends) but compare tha 2...even if this may b tha original it doesnt compare

  • @0Duece24- this wasn't Dusty's song- the originals were by Brook Benton & Dionne Warwick.

Luther took a nearly 20 year old song by one of his idols & put a different spin on it. That version is patently Luther's. The song was already covered multiple times at that point & has been covered countless times since.

For my money Dusty is one of the best live versions- no Luther vocal runs but very emotional on its own terms. And particularly impressive with the composer of the song on piano.

  • Burt Bacharach was so handsome

  • Dusty is the best! Period!

  • Did Dusty record this..she is fantastic on this..just in a league of her own.

  • Dusty never recorded this in studio. This live version on video is all that remains, sadly.

  • wonder if his wife angie was jealous?

  • Not at all. From all accounts Dusty was good friends with Angie Dickinson. Apparently, she knew Angie much better than she ever got to know Burt.

  • @LuvDusty2007 what?! Was Angie...en...having hots for women too?

  • The song writer, the song interpreter. What a moving performance.

    Thank you, Plutootjes,

  • Dusty OWNS this... has this live version been released on CD? This sooo should have made the "Heart & Soul" compilation!

  • My kids got me an ipod for Christmas so I started investigating what I wnated on it and rediscovered Dusty Sprinfield who I remember when I was 7 or 8 as a cool mod chick had some good songs but wow I don't remember all I'm seeing. Now this video shows her as a star with a capital S. At least for this song I would say spectacular.

  • Thanx for posting this...wow!!.. ive never seen this before.. i LOVE it.....Dusty's version way out weighs other versions ( only with Luther Vandros coming a close second).... God bless her..x

    Nikki x

  • this version, even live is nothing more than dionne's original reading of the song.

  • Give us a break georgis, Duty's version blows Dionne's out of the water. Dusty is so amazing singing this.

  • The Orginal is Brook Benton

  • No, it's not.

  • Head and shoulders the best rendition of AHINAH, Dusty makes it sound effortless, much more soul and power than Dionne's version and without the big drum/strings break in BB's own recorded version, it still rocks the soul. Viva BB. Viva Dusty!!

  • I couldn't agree more ..Dusty was the very best indeed!

  • absolutely stunningly phenomenal. as good as anything i have ever heard from any artist. the definitive version of this song and live no less. Dusty i love you.

  • Burt, so nice to hear you sing and thank you very much for all the wonderfull songs you wrote for us.

  • My god what a stunning performance. I have never heard it sung better. Dusty was the greatest.

  • Hey this is brill please do not apologise!!

  • Do you have Promises Promises from this show?

  • Woooooo thank u as always!!:0)

  • AWESOMMMMEEEEEEE
