Good technical death metal isn't easy to come by, it takes research niglet. Try Legions of the Serpent by the Faceless or Horizons of Chaos pt 2. In the 80's metallica, slayer, and exodus were considered punk bands. Metallica was one of the first of heavier metal bands to play with melody progressions. All metal has punk influence, because punk was the first genre to focus on speed and brutality. I never said it was punk. Punk also was the first screaming vocal genre.
