in the UK they have "council tax" which you automatically have to pay to your local authority, even if you built your own house brick by brick, have self-sufficient water supply, recycle your own waste and sewage, use your own electricity, and use no council services whatsoever. All to justify the 6 figure salaries of the local councillers (similar to Mayor in US towns) and the thousands of staff they employ.

I don't think that many people genuinly cared a month or so ago, but the mainstream media and celebrities went into full-throttle for the past 2 weeks (endlessly talking about the wedding) and the sheep became hypnotised.
I had BBC radio on at work on thursday and they mentioned the wedding at least 200 times an hour.
If you ask people WHY they love the royals - they never have any logical answers except "well she looked gorgeous in that dress!"
