I think my bias comes not so much from hatred of the dubs, but a distaste for the the cookie-cutter types of voices that are done with absolutely no emphasis or emotion. The only one that comes to mind that does this really well in the dubs is John Bosch (Ichigo, Koizumi, Lellouch, etc). Also I hate how especially in the more popular anime they replace or abbreviate the opening song. I'm not a sub-purist or anything, but lacking emotion really kills a voice acting job to me |:[
I generally prefer to watch dubs, as it lets you concentrate more on what you're actually watching. A lot of the time I prefer the American dub to the original Japanese (like Eva and Sailor Moon), and I have a lot of anime I bought on dvd after watching it in Japanese with fansubs that I will watch in English. But there are dubs that I just cannot get use to and I think it's because they are just too different to the Japanese voices. For example I can't stand the Ouran dub. It hurts my ears:(
I think most of the dub haters are just crazy otakus.
It's ok to hate english voice acting if it's horrid, no problem, but to generally hate english language in any of the shows you watch is a clear sign that you're a moron.
It's one thing to dislike a particular dub for whatever reason, but another entirely to dismiss english voice acting entirely. Really, it should depend on the anime. I prefer watching something like Azumanga Daioh in Japanese because the jokes and references to Japanese culture feel more authentic. However with something like Outlaw Star, the dub fits the mature and gritty nature of the show perfectly. THIS is what should decide sub vs dub. Not "ENGLISH = BAD!"
I'll be honest. I admit that watching dubbed anime is not as authentic as watching it in original, but neither is watching it with subtitles. If a person really wants the ultimate status of "authenticity" they need to watch the anime in Japanese without any subtitles whatsoever.
Being a dub fan, I don't deny my crutch for watching the show outside its original language, but I think those "dub haters" should do the same especially if they do not speak Japanese fluently.
It actually quite depends, for example, School Rumble. The Dub IMO is much better, but another thing is that I also watched it in Dub first. I get the jokes easier in English. Same with Yu Yu Hakusho. I watched Angel Beats! in Japanese first, and now cannot stand the Dubs. My last one (though I have more) is Baka And Test. I like the Dub better.I think the point you made in people getting used to sub is correct (and elitists), but it doesn't mean there aren't bad Dubs. There are plenty, IMO.
The thing that always bother me with dub-haters is that they almost always preach about how Japanese voice actors always are more superior and professional to any one regardless if media. Which is b******p. Many American cartoons such as Superman The Animated Series Batman The Animated Series, Transformers and Justice League have terrific voice actors who do a fantastic job.
I was a sub purist until ADV's Ghost Stories parody dub showed that "different from the Japanese" did not have to mean "worse." As for dub haters, I get the impression that most haven't watched a complete dub since the days of the old DBZ and Sailor Moon TV dubs. It often takes 3-4 episodes for dub VAs to get into the roles, but after that, it's just the same show in a different language. As for Japanese puns not getting preserved, most of them aren't that great anyway.

The only thing I would say I actually dislike is the dubs which use high-pitched, ultra-girly voices for some of the female cast members - just a personal preference, but I find them somewhat annoying. However there have also been Japanese voices I've found grating, while their English counterparts were much more bearable.
For my own part, I tend to watch subs first, though I'll switch to dubs without any fuss if there's ever a reason for it. (I'll also give the dub of each series I watch a try at some point).
I do have my own personal preferences as to which is better, and these vary depending on the series.
Both have their good and bad points - the Japanese is the original, but English is my natural language, and it's nice to focus purely on the anime without the need to read subs.
I find the whole "I heard the original voices first" thing to be stupid. There have been animes I have watched subbed first and ones I have watched dubbed first. And I have had no problem with switching from version to version. Even as a little kid when I played Starfox Assault I noticed the English voices were different to the English voices from SF64 but did I throw a fit? Of course not. So its a bit sad when a 9 year old is more mature then dub haters.
It's taking it a little too far to use it as a reason to complain about the version you don't watch, and I've also switched from dub to sub and back again with a few series.
However I do think you get used to particular voices over time, and those are the ones you begin to expect. (Hence "preferring the voices you heard first").
Most of the time you can get used to changes of voices pretty quickly, but for some I guess it just sounds too weird for them to watch those few episodes
Japanese names will always sound awkward in English, it's hard to translate what the characters are saying into English because of how differently the languages are structured, more often than not this results in rewritten dialogue and lost meaning. I don't watch South Park's Japanese dub, so why would I watch an anime's English dub? Dubbing takes away from the experience, this isn't a matter of elitism, the Japanese voice actors are just as unique as the anime itself.
"Dub are not all bad" I thought that was obvious, it's like how anime is just a media medium, but some people hate it because of the medium itself, not it's product.
It sometimes pisses me off when the translation is horribly off, that goes for sub and dub.
Also, when the voice is way off the character, it's pretty hard to hear.
Still, not all dubs are bad.
But I think it'll be hard for dubs to reach Japanese voice level when Japanese voice actors are high paid and treated like celebrities.

No of course not, but there aren't enough to get me to bother looking to a dual audio release of a series. There just a handful of dubs I think are Good. The rest are just mediocre~okay and its usually just one or two voices. So why bother?
Also Dubs mean having to wait longer for DVD/BD releases.
It will always be subjective. I've seen a couple dubbed episodes of Cowboy Bebop, and I haven't been satisfied with one single voice actor. Good on the people who can enjoy it, not hating on that, but as i'm sure you will agree with, you cannot force someone to enjoy dubs.
I'm not gonna try to justify my dislike of dubs as I do not need to. It just doesn't feel right to me so i'll be choosing the other alternative, simple as that. No big deal. I do agree that "dub haters" are mildly annoying.
(Cont.) Not only that, but they're a great learning tool as well, especially for someone like myself, who is learning Japanese in college. Having been a fan of anime a good part of my life, hearing both dubbed & subbed titles have given me a bit more insight into what I'm learning in the language, & watching both helps my understanding of pronunciation & comprehension. So yeah, both sides have their good & ill points, but I'm still a fan of either... though I still like dubs.
I'm a fan of either side, truth be told. I've been watching dubs my whole life, because I live in the States &, until high-school, I didn't know of any other way to watch subs, nor did I have much interests in them. However, they do have their place in that they can convey parts of the original dialoge the dubs can't, just as dubs can appeal to an audience subs can't, & sometimes be better, as is the case with Baccano & Black Lagoon, because you can hear all the different accents & such.
I think you're right about people excessively hating dubs because of their pre-existing attachments to the subed version, however I also saw you putting up a lot of clips for Higurashi...You've heard that dub right? I'm not out on a holy crusade to say that the motion of dubbing is bad in general but that one and the dub for Gai Rei Zero, I would definitely prefer listening to subbed. Bad dubs do exist and they should provoke a bit of rage if it kills the experience the anime provided in its sub
I think the biggest reason I watch dubs is because I like quality writing and don't trust most translations. Of course, "quality" doesn't always mean Shakespeare when it comes to the English script, but it's certainly better than some of the ungrammatical messes I've seen on subbed anime. And the fact is that subs tend to be more or less direct translations, making for really awkward dialogue that sounds blocky and unrealistic in English, not to mention that they're just plain wrong sometimes.
I honestly don't care if I watch anime with subs or if its ubbed. I watch it for one main reason: a good storyline. That's what make a series great. As long as the story keeps me interested with its plot and characters, I wouldn't care if the show was dubbed in Namekian!
IDK, when it can to the dub for Akira, it wasn't bad, even for something that was done in the 80s. The Sailor-Moon DiC dub imo only had the issue of crappy dialogue, and Ocean Group and Funimation's dubs of DBZ 10 years and earlier wereshaky at best, where as 4kids had bad dialogue and voicing only because they do it all in one take. They seem to have improved somewhat VA wise, but the dialogue is still cheesy. >:)
I'm more of a gamer than an anime fan, but the subbed vs. dubbed argument still applies and makes my brains want to boil themselves alive.
Japanese dubs are -not- always inherently superior just because they're Japanese. See Xenoblade, for one; which somehow managed to miscast a certain Mr. Wakamoto.
@SeraphimSwordmaster Likewise (ran out of character space), sometimes English versions are far too literal and don't take enough constructive risks with how to translate. I cite Dissidia: Final Fantasy as a big example of this; where the dialogue was horribly wooden and, as a result, felt like a thirteen year-old drama student adapting the entirety of Hamlet.
@SeraphimSwordmaster Really? I didn't see those translation as too literal. Unless you're referring to the deep dialogue that made little to no sense for the story. Heck, I don't think any adjustable localization would've made the story better. Just like the Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere simulcast subs.
@EnvyMizuhashi "Literal" may have been the wrong word, but on the whole, FF dialogue just never seems "natural" to me, except in XII and XIII. The conversations just feel like the characters are using twice as many words to say half as much and the sentence structure often feels a tad uncanny valley for me in English.
@SeraphimSwordmaster So true. I'm currently replaying The Last Remnant and I still can't bear the original Japanese dub because of how bland and boring it sounds. The English one isn't top quality but still pretty good.
I mainly watch dubbed anime, because I can focus more on whats going on on screen rather than having to read the subtitles.
I used to HATE subs, but I recently started watching an anime subbed(I would watch it dubbed, but can't find the dubbed version anywhere) and find that subs really aren't that bad. Plus, it's an ongoing anime and Iv'e already past where the dub is up to.
I really only watch subs if the anime really interest me.
I /usually/ tend to prefer subs over dubs, but it also comes down to what I watched first. I watced the dubbed version of Fruits Basket (which was done VERY well), tried to listen to subbed, and I just couldn't do it. Cromartie High is another dub that just EXCELS beyond the original.
Really, the main problem I have with dubs are the annoying shrill girl voices, and the added unnecessary grunts and noises. Aside from that, I'm more than willing to try out a dub.
I don't watch too much anime, but when I do I try to enjoy both the dub and sub. What happens to me is I end up liking some characters in their dubbed voices, and other characters in their subbed voices. I usually end up liking a higher percentage of the Japanese VAs, mostly because I like the way they convey raw emotion. I definitely still love dubs though.
I've seen both dub haters and sub haters, I just don't try to reason with them, because they don't want to hear reason.
I have never encountered an anime that had dubs that I found more enjoyable than the subs. On the other hand, I have encountered many that had Subs that were far more enjoyable. I find that between the censorship that frequently accompanies dubs and the loss of humor/subtleties that comes with losing the original language makes it difficult for a dub to equal up. Baccano and FMA are both frequently heralded as animes with excellent dubs, but I still find their subs to be more enjoyable.
Well, I generally think dubs are more suited to action series than anything. Comedies/moeblobs/Ecchi/ usually revolves around Japanese culture more than anything. If it's translated into english, generally at least something is "lost in translation" like Japanese puns.
There are still a few bad dubs around... ugh, Higurashi (shudder). But yes, they're much less frequent. There are still a fair amount of just-mediocre dubs though.
I like subs, it's usually far better, there are a few good dubs, but subs to me seem better, I have watched some dubs, but I don't like how they translate them usually. I can complain about this because I do speak some Japanese. Also, the creator of the story is far more involved in the voice acting of the Japanese version, and they can get actors into their appropriate roles. Also there is the fact that I can decide for myself whether or not the translation is accurate by hearing the original.
While I don't really have anything -against- dubs as a whole, at least to the point where I hate the concept, I'll generally seek something out in it's original language if I can because, regardless of how much better or worse the localization and translation is, it's still a different version of the show and, as geeky as this makes me sound, I have an academic interest in the media I consume, and to that end it's better to see it as it was upon initial release.
Has anybody seen the movie name "let the right one in" ? a super good Swedish movie about a vampire girl, but because soo many people was too lazy too read the sup version they remake the moive in USA. they change the title and fuck-up the story so it better fit the america viewers, they even change the stating from somewhere not know to America! (America Fuck Yeah!) and give the makers of the real one a big fuck finger. This is my problem with Dub.
and the Durarara! dub is way better then the subbed version in my opinion, but then when i listened to the bleach dub for the first time after listening the subbed version for the first 4 seasons i didnt like it and after watching this video i understand why now
i agree with your theory. take shin chan fans for example. everyone in america who loves this show loves the overadult humor used in the show, (and that it is poorly translated with completely re scripting and reordering scenes and episodes) why is that? because the subbed japanese version is FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE to find. so they cannot complain.
Subbed or dubbed, it really doesn't bother me, you're seeing the same anime so who cares? But watching subbed anime's can get a little annoying, most of the time I miss what they're saying while I'm replying to a text or talking to someone XD
While I agree that over the years dubs have gotten a lot better. Compared to their japanese counterparts, most are still worse. Not to say all suck, as you said some are better. But the ones you listed were all featured on television. These shows had network backing and more money to buy better voice actors. I still love FMA dubs best, but they had money to buy that shit. I listend to subs because 9/10 the voice acting is better. Not as much as some would make it out to be, but it still is.

@uprising120 The only companies that do what you just said are 4kids, Saban, & Nelvana. Companies like Funimation, Sentai Filmworks, & Aniplex always release uncut subs AND dubs.
I personally really like dubs and think they're a great to have. On one hand I can relate a bit more to the characters since their voices sound more like something I'd hear around me and on the other it often pisses me off to pause the video sometimes only because I couldn't quite follow the subtitles or just not understand what is going on. (my dyslexia helps a lot)
In my opinion, I think any anime fan should watch their shows or movies whatever language they like (English, Japanese, etc.). But my problem with dub haters, like you said, is that they keep telling other anime fans to watch them in Japanese but yet they (dub haters) don't speak that language at all unless they watch awkwardly translated fansubs online.
I'd say I'm pretty equal opportunity. I've preferred dubbed where settings more or less made it feel more natural, i.e. Black Lagoon, Black Butler, Spice and Wolf,Cowboy Bebop and Baccano. I've also liked a few dubs that may not have fit the setting, but still liked it, for ex. Welcome to the NHK, Haruhi, BECK, and p3/P4.
To me , based off of what I've watched/played I would say 55% of Anime/JRPGs sound better with he orig, 35% have Eng. Dubs just as good, and 10% are better in English.
Not to say I don't like sound of the seiyuu in the subbed versions of anime also, although I would admit that in that case I can only gauge the emotion of the actingw/o a true understanding of its relation to the words spoken, meaning I can't tell whether or not they're just overacting. So I would say, my ability to judge Eng. VA is significantly higher than what scale I can use for the JPN/foreign voices. I mean, I'm Chino and I do notice that non-fluent speakers don't notice the overacting.

I mainly watch anime subbed the main reason being I like to read :) but there are times when I become lazy or have had a hard day and just cba and ill sit and watch dubbed but I do think the "sub purists" need to get there head out there ass and remember that 99% of people in the west started watching anime dubbed weather it be dragon ball pokemon sailor moon or other popular anime
i agree with your theory. its like when a book has a movie made of it. everybody has their opinion of what they think it shld sound like. they see the japanese subs and get used to it. i admit i have experienced this. (though i dont through a fit...i just dont watch the dub) but recently ive been going back to rewatch anime in dub form just because at some point i realized that while im reading all the text, i miss the animation. especially when talking during an action scene.
Yeah these dub haters get on my nerves because they automically thinks dubs are trash without giving them a chance.I watch anime mostly dubbed and like it better. The only two animes I would watch it in Japanese is Naruto and Bleach since they english dubs sounds bad. These dub haters forget that thanks to dubbing in America it got more people exposed to anime
english animes are better when the anime has something to do with western culture, cowboy beebop, ect.
the animes that rely on heavy influence from japanese culture are worse in english, because it doesnt fit, just as japanese doesnt fit well with western influenced anime.
Oh, have engaged in this argument so many times, it's actually started to become painful every time I hear it. Dub haters need to realize that anime, at it's base, is a form of entertainment, not some high brow piece of art that needs to be kept pure of any western influence. Yes, there are anime out there that can be labeled as artistic, but overall, anime exists to bring enjoyment. Therefore, with subbed and dubbed, when asked which one I prefer, it's always the one that entertained me more

For example, with the anime, 'Black Lagoon', even though I watched the dubbed version first, and had no problem with it, I actually found myself to enjoy the subbed version more, as I felt those voices better fit the characters. Then, with anime like 'Baccano', I of course prefer the dubbed, not because the subbed is bad, oh no. In fact, I find the Japanese track a superb effort, and the acting was top tier. It's just that culturally, american english
fit better, as 20's New York gangster speak is so inherently American, that no other language could pull it off with a proper degree of believability, so the acting felt more natural. That is my opinion on the dubbed/subbed argument. Not sure if this will change any minds, but felt it needed to be said, and hey, if I can at least make one person listen up, then I felt I have at least done my duty as a fellow lover of anime.
I have to agree with you on how stupid the Subs vs. Dubs argument is. I actually love both, although I prefer dubs more (simply because I tend to do other things while I watch anime so I don't have to constantly look at the video), I still love subbed anime. For example, Fairy Tale is better subbed in my opinion (Natsu has an extremely nasally voice in the dub). So I would have to say that I find the complete and total Subs vs. Dubs debate pointless
This is so true for me, especially because of Natsu for the english dub of Fairy Tail, I just can't love the english voice, really good video by the way.
I prefer the original language, but I don't hate the dubs because they're not ALL bad (Some are better as you say and some are even downright fucking hilarious)
On a different note "Persona 4" the game, I really liked the dub there (not ALL, then again I don't like ALL original voice acting either)

There's one Anime which I'll say unilaterally has a terrible dub, and that's Azumanga Daioh. I know the VAs involved put a lot of work into it, especially trying to mimic the styles of the original characters, but it doesn't excuse the fact that they ultimately failed.
Otherwise, I'm neutral on the debate. I loved the dub for Fullmetal Alchemist, and while I prefer the Japanese versions for most of my other shows, I generally don't mind the dubs.
Most sub fans reasons why sub is better is invalid because THEY CAN'T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE. Japanese people don't watch anime with subs so why should we? If you want to read, read a manga
i dont hate dubs, i dont rage upon people who like dubbs, and i dont feel "more of a fan" by hearing the original soundtrack, but i definetly find the dubbed versions cliched (yes, even an entire episode of an anime (black cat- which was actually quite a good dub) in dub that i never watched before) -i simply prefer subs over dubs
i actually tried to find a flaw in that rant........and failed :/ i try to keep an open mind about subs and dubs and honestly i dont care if it's in dub and sounds better, if it does then i'll watch it simple as.

I like dub so much better than subs. I hate having to read the bottom 1/3 of the screen to know what the fuck is going on and would prefer to have the show done in a language that I actually speak so that I can watch the art. Because the artwork is half of what anime's about anyways. But if someone prefers subs, who am I to care what they like?
Personally, I don't find that Japanese dialoge and English voices mix all too well. And no, not even with Cowboy Bebop.
Then there's also the fact that 90% of all anime dialoge is campy and schmaltzy as fuck (By my Western standards). So I'd rather have it filtered into my brain through the written word than through voices I can actually understand.
I prefer dubs because they are easier to get into the series and also I can comprehend voice acting and emotions WHEN THE'RE DONE RIGHT. Japanese it's hit and miss because I don't speak the language I can't judge the voice acting and sometimes I have to imagine how they deliver lines and that just takes the fun from watching anime.
The main issue for me with dubs is localisation and th length of time it takes for them to become avalible, both of these araise because of the EXTREMEILY widely critiqued 4Kids dubbing/localisation of One Piece, no guns, no blood, no smoking (even by a character named SMOKER) and a shed-full of plot holes. While i'm fairly sure that was about as craply as you CAN dub an anime, its still disturbed me to the extent that i just prefer subs. That said, i respect someone feeling otherwise
I prefer subs MOST of the time. The Japanese dialogue just sounds more natural to me, dubs are always awkward and I feel they don't capture the emotions or the personality of the characters properly. Plus it doesn't help that every character in dubbed anime is American. British accents would be much better for the majority of dubbed animes. That being said there are some exceptions, I have watched some damn fine dubbed anime in the past so I don't hate dubbed at all.
lol....your theory is amusing and might apply to other people. For me personally i think its because i live in Malaysia, affected and hence understand Japanese culture to a certain extent, everything from tone of voice to the way a person eat their ice cream makes up their personality. the American dubbed portrayals simp;y throw things out of whack, where a character is not...uni-directional but just strange. things just dont make sense.
Example, Dragon Ball, Goku's voice is a high pitched kid's in original japanese lending to the fact that he's naive, always believing in the power of good and doesn't understand how the world 'works' (sort of like a forrest gump who can fight)
the Americans dont understand this, and gave him a manly voice cause they thought that the main character must be manly and pitch of voice deoesnt neccessarily translate to a person's naivete... or something like that
I always watch the show subbed first (mostly because that's what comes out first), and often watch the show dubbed afterwards to give me a reason to watch it. But even then I've only found so few good dubs most of them just seem like the actors were just reading seem were just reading their the lines, even recent shows like Chaos;head that have been dubbed, have this problem.
Anime dialogue sounds awkward in any language. Even in Japanese. Real Japanese don't speak like anime characters. I guess why people hate dubs is because it's more offensive to the ears because they can't tell how awkward it sounds in Japanese.
I agree with you for the fact that SOME dubs are good but it is a sliver.
Most dubs are god awful for the fact that the voices barley match the personality and usual have little to no emotion in them compared to the original.
I only have one issue with dubs. AMERICAN ACCENTS! I hate it. I don't want to hear AMERICANS making annoying AMERICAN ACCENTS in my favorite anime shows. Where the fuck are the British voice actors? Or any other English speaking country? I have nothing against dubs per se. I DO have a problem though with it all being American voice accents.
@Mopantsu That's because most Anime's don't take place in a setting where an accent would be appropriate, sure if a foreign character would speak in an different accent but if its not implied or clearly stated none the rest of the cast has need to talk in an accent. In some settings an accent would be entirely appropriate, take Baccano! for example.
The only reason I watch anime is because I'm learning Japanese and I'm watching tons of raws to help. Otherwise, they are just shitty chinese cartoons.
Personally, when I watch anime, I always go to with the cast that I feel has the best acting, and best personifies the characters. Sometimes the best is the English cast; sometimes the best is Japanese.
L!!!!!!! Sorry haven't seen alot of anime. I like the dubbed and its hard to find on Youtube. When I do find it I watch the whole series before moving on. So Death Note is my all time favortie
If there is a dub available, I watch it. If not, subs it is. I find I can pay more attention to the animation if I am listening to it in the English language. And heck, I don't speak Japanese so if the voices are good or bad, I CAN'T TELL. They have different voice stereotypes for different people. I want the voices to match with the stereotype over here if it's dubbed so I actually *prefer* the voices be different in the dub. Honestly, it's personal preference. :D
I once made the argument that I don't watch cartoons to read. I admit that could've been worded better but that doesn't mean I'm lazy or hate subs or not wanting to learn about the Japanese culture, as one user accused a bunch of us of. I have a brain. I can tell a bad dub when it turns up. A normal sight is something like, "the jap version is better!" or "horrible dub. Horrible, horrible dub." How can you tell? I can't. They could be saying it's awesome when it's not. It's stupid!
It's also very true when you showed clips of the Madoka Magica trailer. Out of curiosity, I scrolled down to see not only complaints, but someone with pure hatred over Homura's VA, Cristina Vee, and gave Aniplex the middle finger. Now, I don't know much about Cristina Vee, but she seemed pretty good as Homura. Then again why place judgment on a trailer when I could watch the whole thing before making the verdict?
First off, I would like to like to thank you for pointing out the pet peeves of fandom such as the immature tards of the main three shounen anime (even though I like two of them) who constantly bash each other while others like me just enjoy them but know there are better ones out there. Second, rabid yaoi fangirls.....Yeah, I don't need to explain any further. With those aside, I sometimes have preferences between dubs and the original, but I like to give dubs a chance once and a while.
for me its simple, i find it easier to watch animes dubbed, i dont want to read the bottom text cause then im essentially reading a manga, cause i cant fully watch the animation
not to say that i havent watched things subbed, but the anime has to be pretty damn good for me to care that much
i understand english, i cant get the nuances of the japanese language. i actually find alot of japanese voices overacted imo, but i think that is more of a cultural difference
I've seen both the sub and dub of Fruits Basket & Ouran High School, and didn't care. Same with Haruhi series. I watched the Haruhi movie in subs, until the last part, where I could no longer find a sub, only dub, and I didn't give a shit. But alot of anime, including my two favorite, Maid-Sama and Shugo Chara, have not been dubbed. I have two points. Some anime is more suited to subs and cannot be dubbed well. Some can be dubbed excellently. And as long as you get to watch it, who cares?
i have to agree, i like dubs for some and subs for others, i always watch the first ep in dub then in sub and decide which i like more, things like FMA and ouran host club, and bleach i prefer the Dub. but things like Highschool Of the Dead i just have to watch in sub, the dub version is so anoying with all the pointless swearing, i can see it for a bit cuzz ya kno omg a zombue apac is here but god theres a limit. saying jesus and FU*K every other sentance is retarded as hell.

I always judge each equally, and after hearing each make a decision, though I do find myself generally preferring japanese with subs. There are some great dubs out there, but there are also some terrible ones. There are also some that had brilliant japanese acting and should be heard as such, and the same can go for dubs. Look at Cowboy Bebop for a great dub example, and Angel Beats for a great sub example.
There are also sub haters that bitch about anything not dubbed. Draw attention to them.
I still have this annoying subconcious bias against dubs, since whenever I find a show available in both, I choose the sub without even giving a single chance to the dub, even though I've seen animes in english and german (also french and spanish, but those were plain hilarious) and had absolutely no problems with them in most cases. It's kind of similar as the bias that I have against anime I have already read the source manga of, except this one has some sense in it at least.
While I certainly don't go around bashing people who prefer dubs, I will always, always prefer things in their original language, whether it be anime, movies, or literature. This is because nuances of language are hard to translate outside of different language "families" (ie. Japanese to Chinese translations are generally better than, say, Japanese to English translations. Of course, as I can only passably understand five languages, I have to make do with translations sometimes.
Of course, having watched anime for 10+ years, I have the benefit of actually being able to understand the original Japanese voice acting :P In my opinion, though, the Japanese voice actors are always better. There are some dubs that have come close - Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, etc, come to mind - but somehow the Japanese voices seem to "fit" better. This also applies to anime where I have deliberately watched the sub before the original. I think this has something to do with the size of the
Japanese seiyuu industry, though. Larger industry = more voice actors = more variety = higher chances of finding the perfect voice. I do have to admit that my aversion to dubs is partially caused by the 4kids fiascos, though *cough*OnePiece!*cough* Scr*w executive meddling. And the constant mispronunciations of Japanese names and places. I mean, really? Do they not have the five seconds needed to, I don't know, find out the correct way to pronounce THE CHARACTERS' NAMES??!! *pantpantpant*
Also, I think that the Japanese VAs are simply more talented. The ~30 most known ones are simply amazing. They can voice characters that are spectra away from each other and make them all sound awesome, and even when they're voicing like characters, they manage to make the characters similar, yet distinct. In short, thems got skillz.
@CallistaRhian I really don't think you should judge the quality of the industry just by it's size. I mean, that fact that it's so large, if anything, just means that anyone can get in, talented or not. As for the "More talented" argument, There are just as many talented English VAs as there are Japanese ones and they all have an equal amount of variety under they're belt. The reason why there aren't as many well known VA's is that fans usually won't give dubs the attention they deserve.
@CallistaRhian as for name pronunciation, I think's it's more to do with the accent than it is to actual pronunciation. It's become less and less of an issue in recent dubs. Also, I think most of the problems with pronunciation seem to stem from the fact that fans get so used to hearing someone else say it that it always comes out wiered when a different person does besides, it's also present when the japanese try to pronounce english words and names also. It usually never comes out right.
Shit iv got no problem with subs i just prefer dubs cause its hard to read subtitles about the only anime i can watch in sub is naruto shippuden only cause dub is like hundreds of episodes behind it.
In the English dialect the seriousness or tone of how you say the word strengthens the meaning and or depth, in most other languages there's just another way to pronounce that word more seriously either way subbed or dubbed it doesn't matter it's what people prefer and not what you prefer
I tend to enjoy something a lot more in the original language. Not that I have anything against dubs, think it's great that anime gets a bigger audience. There are also Americans who hate subs, but will gladly enjoy dubs.

I obviously watch older anime dubbed if they have one. And I watch also whats fresh out of Japan. And when I hear the licence and dubbing of an anime that I had followed seasons back that I liked, I'm over the moon. Now I can listen to it in english, paying more attention to the animation of the anime than subtitles. This way, I can find a lot more touches that I missed before. I've also found that I have a lot more tolerance when it comes to "bad" dubs

Anyone who understands Japanese that prefers English dubs? I doubt there are many. Even if the English dub has better voice acting, you always lose some things in the translation.

But yeah, I get so attached to an Anime and it's characters that I hardly ever give dubbing a chance. Sometimes they suck, sometimes they're good. It's all a matter of preference.
I think my bias comes not so much from hatred of the dubs, but a distaste for the the cookie-cutter types of voices that are done with absolutely no emphasis or emotion. The only one that comes to mind that does this really well in the dubs is John Bosch (Ichigo, Koizumi, Lellouch, etc). Also I hate how especially in the more popular anime they replace or abbreviate the opening song. I'm not a sub-purist or anything, but lacking emotion really kills a voice acting job to me |:[

I generally prefer to watch dubs, as it lets you concentrate more on what you're actually watching. A lot of the time I prefer the American dub to the original Japanese (like Eva and Sailor Moon), and I have a lot of anime I bought on dvd after watching it in Japanese with fansubs that I will watch in English. But there are dubs that I just cannot get use to and I think it's because they are just too different to the Japanese voices. For example I can't stand the Ouran dub. It hurts my ears:(

It's one thing to dislike a particular dub for whatever reason, but another entirely to dismiss english voice acting entirely. Really, it should depend on the anime. I prefer watching something like Azumanga Daioh in Japanese because the jokes and references to Japanese culture feel more authentic. However with something like Outlaw Star, the dub fits the mature and gritty nature of the show perfectly. THIS is what should decide sub vs dub. Not "ENGLISH = BAD!"

I'll be honest. I admit that watching dubbed anime is not as authentic as watching it in original, but neither is watching it with subtitles. If a person really wants the ultimate status of "authenticity" they need to watch the anime in Japanese without any subtitles whatsoever.
Being a dub fan, I don't deny my crutch for watching the show outside its original language, but I think those "dub haters" should do the same especially if they do not speak Japanese fluently.

It actually quite depends, for example, School Rumble. The Dub IMO is much better, but another thing is that I also watched it in Dub first. I get the jokes easier in English. Same with Yu Yu Hakusho. I watched Angel Beats! in Japanese first, and now cannot stand the Dubs. My last one (though I have more) is Baka And Test. I like the Dub better.I think the point you made in people getting used to sub is correct (and elitists), but it doesn't mean there aren't bad Dubs. There are plenty, IMO.

The thing that always bother me with dub-haters is that they almost always preach about how Japanese voice actors always are more superior and professional to any one regardless if media. Which is b******p. Many American cartoons such as Superman The Animated Series Batman The Animated Series, Transformers and Justice League have terrific voice actors who do a fantastic job.

I was a sub purist until ADV's Ghost Stories parody dub showed that "different from the Japanese" did not have to mean "worse." As for dub haters, I get the impression that most haven't watched a complete dub since the days of the old DBZ and Sailor Moon TV dubs. It often takes 3-4 episodes for dub VAs to get into the roles, but after that, it's just the same show in a different language. As for Japanese puns not getting preserved, most of them aren't that great anyway.

I find that sometimes I have trouble processing spoken dialogue, and this means either rewinding (losing the flow and feel, and annoying anyone who may be watching with me), or risk missing something which may later be vital to the plot.

The only thing I would say I actually dislike is the dubs which use high-pitched, ultra-girly voices for some of the female cast members - just a personal preference, but I find them somewhat annoying. However there have also been Japanese voices I've found grating, while their English counterparts were much more bearable.

For my own part, I tend to watch subs first, though I'll switch to dubs without any fuss if there's ever a reason for it. (I'll also give the dub of each series I watch a try at some point).
I do have my own personal preferences as to which is better, and these vary depending on the series.
Both have their good and bad points - the Japanese is the original, but English is my natural language, and it's nice to focus purely on the anime without the need to read subs.

I find the whole "I heard the original voices first" thing to be stupid. There have been animes I have watched subbed first and ones I have watched dubbed first. And I have had no problem with switching from version to version. Even as a little kid when I played Starfox Assault I noticed the English voices were different to the English voices from SF64 but did I throw a fit? Of course not. So its a bit sad when a 9 year old is more mature then dub haters.

It's taking it a little too far to use it as a reason to complain about the version you don't watch, and I've also switched from dub to sub and back again with a few series.
However I do think you get used to particular voices over time, and those are the ones you begin to expect. (Hence "preferring the voices you heard first").
Most of the time you can get used to changes of voices pretty quickly, but for some I guess it just sounds too weird for them to watch those few episodes

Japanese names will always sound awkward in English, it's hard to translate what the characters are saying into English because of how differently the languages are structured, more often than not this results in rewritten dialogue and lost meaning. I don't watch South Park's Japanese dub, so why would I watch an anime's English dub? Dubbing takes away from the experience, this isn't a matter of elitism, the Japanese voice actors are just as unique as the anime itself.

"Dub are not all bad" I thought that was obvious, it's like how anime is just a media medium, but some people hate it because of the medium itself, not it's product.
It sometimes pisses me off when the translation is horribly off, that goes for sub and dub.
Also, when the voice is way off the character, it's pretty hard to hear.
Still, not all dubs are bad.
But I think it'll be hard for dubs to reach Japanese voice level when Japanese voice actors are high paid and treated like celebrities.

No of course not, but there aren't enough to get me to bother looking to a dual audio release of a series. There just a handful of dubs I think are Good. The rest are just mediocre~okay and its usually just one or two voices. So why bother?
Also Dubs mean having to wait longer for DVD/BD releases.

It will always be subjective. I've seen a couple dubbed episodes of Cowboy Bebop, and I haven't been satisfied with one single voice actor. Good on the people who can enjoy it, not hating on that, but as i'm sure you will agree with, you cannot force someone to enjoy dubs.
I'm not gonna try to justify my dislike of dubs as I do not need to. It just doesn't feel right to me so i'll be choosing the other alternative, simple as that. No big deal. I do agree that "dub haters" are mildly annoying.

I've been watching dubs my whole life, because I live in the States &, until high-school, I didn't know of any other way to watch subs, nor did I have much interests in them. However, they do have their place in that they can convey parts of the original dialoge the dubs can't, just as dubs can appeal to an audience subs can't, & sometimes be better, as is the case with Baccano & Black Lagoon, because you can hear all the different accents & such.

I think you're right about people excessively hating dubs because of their pre-existing attachments to the subed version, however I also saw you putting up a lot of clips for Higurashi...You've heard that dub right? I'm not out on a holy crusade to say that the motion of dubbing is bad in general but that one and the dub for Gai Rei Zero, I would definitely prefer listening to subbed. Bad dubs do exist and they should provoke a bit of rage if it kills the experience the anime provided in its sub

I think the biggest reason I watch dubs is because I like quality writing and don't trust most translations. Of course, "quality" doesn't always mean Shakespeare when it comes to the English script, but it's certainly better than some of the ungrammatical messes I've seen on subbed anime. And the fact is that subs tend to be more or less direct translations, making for really awkward dialogue that sounds blocky and unrealistic in English, not to mention that they're just plain wrong sometimes.

IDK, when it can to the dub for Akira, it wasn't bad, even for something that was done in the 80s. The Sailor-Moon DiC dub imo only had the issue of crappy dialogue, and Ocean Group and Funimation's dubs of DBZ 10 years and earlier wereshaky at best, where as 4kids had bad dialogue and voicing only because they do it all in one take. They seem to have improved somewhat VA wise, but the dialogue is still cheesy. >:)

Japanese dubs are -not- always inherently superior just because they're Japanese. See Xenoblade, for one; which somehow managed to miscast a certain Mr. Wakamoto.

I cite Dissidia: Final Fantasy as a big example of this; where the dialogue was horribly wooden and, as a result, felt like a thirteen year-old drama student adapting the entirety of Hamlet.

Heck, I don't think any adjustable localization would've made the story better. Just like the Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere simulcast subs.

@EnvyMizuhashi "Literal" may have been the wrong word, but on the whole, FF dialogue just never seems "natural" to me, except in XII and XIII. The conversations just feel like the characters are using twice as many words to say half as much and the sentence structure often feels a tad uncanny valley for me in English.

I mainly watch dubbed anime, because I can focus more on whats going on on screen rather than having to read the subtitles.
I used to HATE subs, but I recently started watching an anime subbed(I would watch it dubbed, but can't find the dubbed version anywhere) and find that subs really aren't that bad. Plus, it's an ongoing anime and Iv'e already past where the dub is up to.
I really only watch subs if the anime really interest me.

I /usually/ tend to prefer subs over dubs, but it also comes down to what I watched first. I watced the dubbed version of Fruits Basket (which was done VERY well), tried to listen to subbed, and I just couldn't do it. Cromartie High is another dub that just EXCELS beyond the original.
Really, the main problem I have with dubs are the annoying shrill girl voices, and the added unnecessary grunts and noises. Aside from that, I'm more than willing to try out a dub.

I don't watch too much anime, but when I do I try to enjoy both the dub and sub. What happens to me is I end up liking some characters in their dubbed voices, and other characters in their subbed voices. I usually end up liking a higher percentage of the Japanese VAs, mostly because I like the way they convey raw emotion. I definitely still love dubs though.
I've seen both dub haters and sub haters, I just don't try to reason with them, because they don't want to hear reason.

I have never encountered an anime that had dubs that I found more enjoyable than the subs. On the other hand, I have encountered many that had Subs that were far more enjoyable. I find that between the censorship that frequently accompanies dubs and the loss of humor/subtleties that comes with losing the original language makes it difficult for a dub to equal up. Baccano and FMA are both frequently heralded as animes with excellent dubs, but I still find their subs to be more enjoyable.

Well, I generally think dubs are more suited to action series than anything. Comedies/moeblobs/Ecchi/ usually revolves around Japanese culture more than anything. If it's translated into english, generally at least something is "lost in translation" like Japanese puns.

I like subs, it's usually far better, there are a few good dubs, but subs to me seem better, I have watched some dubs, but I don't like how they translate them usually. I can complain about this because I do speak some Japanese. Also, the creator of the story is far more involved in the voice acting of the Japanese version, and they can get actors into their appropriate roles. Also there is the fact that I can decide for myself whether or not the translation is accurate by hearing the original.

While I don't really have anything -against- dubs as a whole, at least to the point where I hate the concept, I'll generally seek something out in it's original language if I can because, regardless of how much better or worse the localization and translation is, it's still a different version of the show and, as geeky as this makes me sound, I have an academic interest in the media I consume, and to that end it's better to see it as it was upon initial release.

Has anybody seen the movie name "let the right one in" ? a super good Swedish movie about a vampire girl, but because soo many people was too lazy too read the sup version they remake the moive in USA. they change the title and fuck-up the story so it better fit the america viewers, they even change the stating from somewhere not know to America! While I agree that over the years dubs have gotten a lot better. Compared to their japanese counterparts, most are still worse. Not to say all suck, as you said some are better. But the ones you listed were all featured on television. These shows had network backing and more money to buy better voice actors. I still love FMA dubs best, but they had money to buy that shit. I listend to subs because 9/10 the voice acting is better. Not as much as some would make it out to be, but it still is.

I personally really like dubs and think they're a great to have. On one hand I can relate a bit more to the characters since their voices sound more like something I'd hear around me and on the other it often pisses me off to pause the video sometimes only because I couldn't quite follow the subtitles or just not understand what is going on. (my dyslexia helps a lot)

In my opinion, I think any anime fan should watch their shows or movies whatever language they like (English, Japanese, etc.). But my problem with dub haters, like you said, is that they keep telling other anime fans to watch them in Japanese but yet they (dub haters) don't speak that language at all unless they watch awkwardly translated fansubs online.

I'd say I'm pretty equal opportunity. I've preferred dubbed where settings more or less made it feel more natural, i.e. Black Lagoon, Black Butler, Spice and Wolf,Cowboy Bebop and Baccano. I've also liked a few dubs that may not have fit the setting, but still liked it, for ex. Welcome to the NHK, Haruhi, BECK, and p3/P4.
To me , based off of what I've watched/played I would say 55% of Anime/JRPGs sound better with he orig, 35% have Eng. Dubs just as good, and 10% are better in English.

Not to say I don't like sound of the seiyuu in the subbed versions of anime also, although I would admit that in that case I can only gauge the emotion of the actingw/o a true understanding of its relation to the words spoken, meaning I can't tell whether or not they're just overacting. So I would say, my ability to judge Eng. VA is significantly higher than what scale I can use for the JPN/foreign voices. I mean, I'm Chino and I do notice that non-fluent speakers don't notice the overacting.

(though i dont through a fit...i just dont watch the dub) but recently ive been going back to rewatch anime in dub form just because at some point i realized that while im reading all the text, i miss the animation. especially when talking during an action scene.

Oh, have engaged in this argument so many times, it's actually started to become painful every time I hear it. Dub haters need to realize that anime, at it's base, is a form of entertainment, not some high brow piece of art that needs to be kept pure of any western influence. Yes, there are anime out there that can be labeled as artistic, but overall, anime exists to bring enjoyment. fit better, as 20's New York gangster speak is so inherently American, that no other language could pull it off with a proper degree of believability, so the acting felt more natural. That is my opinion on the dubbed/subbed argument. I have to agree with you on how stupid the Subs vs. Dubs argument is. I actually love both, although I prefer dubs more (simply because I tend to do other things while I watch anime so I don't have to constantly look at the video), I still love subbed anime. For example, Fairy Tale is better subbed in my opinion (Natsu has an extremely nasally voice in the dub). So I would have to say that I find the complete and total Subs vs. Dubs debate pointless

I prefer the original language, but I don't hate the dubs because they're not ALL bad (Some are better as you say and some are even downright fucking hilarious)
On a different note "Persona 4" the game, I really liked the dub there (not ALL, then again I don't like ALL original voice acting either)

There's one Anime which I'll say unilaterally has a terrible dub, and that's Azumanga Daioh. I know the VAs involved put a lot of work into it, especially trying to mimic the styles of the original characters, but it doesn't excuse the fact that they ultimately failed.
Otherwise, I'm neutral on the debate. I loved the dub for Fullmetal Alchemist, and while I prefer the Japanese versions for most of my other shows, I generally don't mind the dubs.

Personally, I don't find that Japanese dialoge and English voices mix all too well. And no, not even with Cowboy Bebop.
Then there's also the fact that 90% of all anime dialoge is campy and schmaltzy as fuck (By my Western standards). So I'd rather have it filtered into my brain through the written word than through voices I can actually understand.
Plus, I'm Dutch; I was raised on subtitles.

The main issue for me with dubs is localisation and th length of time it takes for them to become avalible, both of these araise because of the EXTREMEILY widely critiqued 4Kids dubbing/localisation of One Piece, no guns, no blood, no smoking (even by a character named SMOKER) and a shed-full of plot holes. While i'm fairly sure that was about as craply as you CAN dub an anime, its still disturbed me to the extent that i just prefer subs. That said, i respect someone feeling otherwise

I prefer subs MOST of the time. The Japanese dialogue just sounds more natural to me, dubs are always awkward and I feel they don't capture the emotions or the personality of the characters properly. Plus it doesn't help that every character in dubbed anime is American. British accents would be much better for the majority of dubbed animes. That being said there are some exceptions, I have watched some damn fine dubbed anime in the past so I don't hate dubbed at all.

For me personally i think its because i live in Malaysia, affected and hence understand Japanese culture to a certain extent, everything from tone of voice to the way a person eat their ice cream makes up their personality. the American dubbed portrayals simp;y throw things out of whack, where a character is not...uni-directional but just strange. things just dont make sense.

Example, Dragon Ball, Goku's voice is a high pitched kid's in original japanese lending to the fact that he's naive, always believing in the power of good and doesn't understand how the world 'works' (sort of like a forrest gump who can fight)

I always watch the show subbed first (mostly because that's what comes out first), and often watch the show dubbed afterwards to give me a reason to watch it. But even then I've only found so few good dubs most of them just seem like the actors were just reading seem were just reading their the lines, even recent shows like Chaos;head that have been dubbed, have this problem.

I only have one issue with dubs. AMERICAN ACCENTS! I hate it. I don't want to hear AMERICANS making annoying AMERICAN ACCENTS in my favorite anime shows. Where the fuck are the British voice actors? Or any other English speaking country? I have nothing against dubs per se. I DO have a problem though with it all being American voice accents.

@Mopantsu That's because most Anime's don't take place in a setting where an accent would be appropriate, sure if a foreign character would speak in an different accent but if its not implied or clearly stated none the rest of the cast has need to talk in an accent. In some settings an accent would be entirely appropriate, take Baccano! for example.

If there is a dub available, I watch it. If not, subs it is. I find I can pay more attention to the animation if I am listening to it in the English language. And heck, I don't speak Japanese so if the voices are good or bad, I CAN'T TELL. They have different voice stereotypes for different people. I want the voices to match with the stereotype over here if it's dubbed so I actually *prefer* the voices be different in the dub. Honestly, it's personal preference. :D

I admit that could've been worded better but that doesn't mean I'm lazy or hate subs or not wanting to learn about the Japanese culture, as one user accused a bunch of us of. I have a brain. I can tell a bad dub when it turns up. A normal sight is something like, "the jap version is better!" or "horrible dub. Horrible, horrible dub." How can you tell? I can't. I've seen both the sub and dub of Fruits Basket & Ouran High School, and didn't care. Same with Haruhi series. I watched the Haruhi movie in subs, until the last part, where I could no longer find a sub, only dub, and I didn't give a shit. But alot of anime, including my two favorite, Maid-Sama and Shugo Chara, have not been dubbed. I have two points. Some anime is more suited to subs and cannot be dubbed well. Some can be dubbed excellently. And as long as you get to watch it, who cares?

I always judge each equally, and after hearing each make a decision, though I do find myself generally preferring japanese with subs. There are some great dubs out there, but there are also some terrible ones. There are also some that had brilliant japanese acting and should be heard as such, and the same can go for dubs. Look at Cowboy Bebop for a great dub example, and Angel Beats for a great sub example.
There are also sub haters that bitch about anything not dubbed. Draw attention to them.

I still have this annoying subconcious bias against dubs, since whenever I find a show available in both, I choose the sub without even giving a single chance to the dub, even though I've seen animes in english and german (also french and spanish, but those were plain hilarious) and had absolutely no problems with them in most cases. It's kind of similar as the bias that I have against anime I have already read the source manga of, except this one has some sense in it at least.

While I certainly don't go around bashing people who prefer dubs, I will always, always prefer things in their original language, whether it be anime, movies, or literature. This is because nuances of language are hard to translate outside of different language "families" (ie. Japanese to Chinese translations are generally better than, say, Japanese to English translations. Of course, as I can only passably understand five languages, I have to make do with translations sometimes.

Also, I think that the Japanese VAs are simply more talented. The ~30 most known ones are simply amazing. They can voice characters that are spectra away from each other and make them all sound awesome, and even when they're voicing like characters, they manage to make the characters similar, yet distinct. I mean, that fact that it's so large, if anything, just means that anyone can get in, talented or not. As for the "More talented" argument, There are just as many talented English VAs as there are Japanese ones and they all have an equal amount of variety under they're belt. The reason why there aren't as many well known VA's is that fans usually won't give dubs the attention they deserve.

@CallistaRhian as for name pronunciation, I think's it's more to do with the accent than it is to actual pronunciation. It's become less and less of an issue in recent dubs. Also, I think most of the problems with pronunciation seem to stem from the fact that fans get so used to hearing someone else say it that it always comes out wiered when a different person does besides, it's also present when the japanese try to pronounce english words and names also. It usually never comes out right.

In the English dialect the seriousness or tone of how you say the word strengthens the meaning and or depth, in most other languages there's just another way to pronounce that word more seriously either way subbed or dubbed it doesn't matter it's what people prefer and not what you prefer

I obviously watch older anime dubbed if they have one. And I watch also whats fresh out of Japan. And when I hear the licence and dubbing of an anime that I had followed seasons back that I liked, I'm over the moon. Now I can listen to it in english, paying more attention to the animation of the anime than subtitles. This way, I can find a lot more touches that I missed before. I've also found that I have a lot more tolerance when it comes to "bad" dubs
