  • That sounds like a fretless bass.

  • 24 years old Pat .... WOW

  • Guy has camel toe?

  • Strange. Pat`s guitar looks larger than the size of Pat ??

  • @Ju105 not knowing that this song is called "jaco" and calling someone else a retard for it makes you retarded. do some research before you say something stupid.

  • @joerobot32 lol

  • @Ju105 It worked, too - 90,000 hits, ain't bad.

  • God, all the hair.

  • MUY BUENO EL VIDEO JACO ES UN MAESTRO UN SOLO LIMPIO CON ARMONIA Y SOLTURA, ES UN MAESTRO Y GRAN REFERENTES PARA LOS BAJISTAS.

  • A rare video of the Great PMG, thanks for posting !

  • Makes a mistake, slides wrong? Your an idiot!!! Can you play like Mark or Pat? Do you know what was going on in their minds when they played that pice? Dont copy. Feel and create.

  • at 2:58 pat makes a mistake...haha!

  • @neilraoufsw 2:47 he slides wrong too:)

  • If I could groove as well as Mark Egan .

  • Any 80's hair-metal band would have been be proud ;)

  • A Master Musician at a young age!

  • @bgstrat62

No one has ever claimed that this is Jaco. The name of the SONG however, is Jaco.

  • a good example of how difficult it can be to play in tune *exactly* like jaco.

  • @leokasper7107 that tight assed shirt really makes it hard,SORRY I could'nt resist, He is an awesome bassist but looses the hairstyle battle by a g string to Jaco,he was'nt known for his wardrobe he looks like he fell out of a goodwill box,as great as he was he looked like a bum,not sayin he should dress like Travolta but come on....Sorry,he is great but not well dressed.

  • @leokasper7107 I agree, the intonation just isn't there like Jaco had it; great ideas, but the tuning just doesn't make it, unfortunately...

@Mas122862 Pat is such a good guitarist, he could have used any bassist, there's no reason why he should have split with Mark Egan other than that Egan had other projects in mind. Im my opinion, Steve Rodby is the perfect bassist for the PMG, and I love the albums Pat has made with him...

  • "Jaco" is just the name of the song.

  • I don't like Danny Gotlieb's Vibe on drums just too frenetic & out of solid pocket too...he just isn't Alex Acuna is he??Oh and while we're at it "Pat's pocket is way better now that before!!!But he looks cute don't he??Ha!!!

  • I have always dug Metheny and this Mark Egan is absolutely fantastic!!!Pat needs to check his tuning on this cut!!!!

  • Well, after 30 years I think I finally figured out why Metheny dumped Mark Egan. Egan was simply a better bass player than Metheny was a guitar player at the time...and perhaps stole his thunder. Too bad. They sounded so good together...

  • Mark Egan on the Bass

  • @guitarfranzl yeah, he's awesome...god bless him for going for it

  • Hey wait a minute!!!! That's not Jaco!!! It cannot be!!! Jaco never used blue shirt.. I'm sure!

  • this guy is my friend on facebook ha

  • jajaja no es jaco pero ni ahi....

  • @carabata64 Ay, que es la canción llamada 'Jaco', no el bajista llamado Jaco.

  • AWESOME!!!! Best Music on Earth >>> period.

  • That's NOT JACO. what the hell?

  • @BungaEBiker

The SONG is called Jaco, the bass player is Mark Egan. This is a bit of a tribute to Pastorius.

And PS, Egan's a hell of a bass player too.

  • @MrStrangeSensation Yes, but Jaco was still very much alive...

  • @budator7

Oh yes, absolutely! I know my Jaco, hahaha.

This video is from 1978? Pastorius was pretty much at the peak of his career around this time, still working with Weather Report and kicking ass all over the place.

  • @budator7

Oh yeah of course. Just goes to show how awesome Jaco was. People were naming songs after him, paying tribute and mimicking his style while he was still alive. Jaco was and always will be a God in the world of bass.

  • amazing we are all playing music from THE REAL MUSIC TIMES from the seventies or realy early 80's bc after dat just nothing realy happend but iam glad god gv us these angels before for us

  • J'adore le haut de pyjama de Mark Egan...

  • That bass player is wearing pajamas lol

  • @bungholio80 "that bass player" ...lol

  • How old would Metheny be in this video ?

  • @MrBlack125 He is already an accomplished 25 years old lol

  • is that a jazz neck or precision? i know its a customised preccy with added jpup, but the neck?

  • does anybody know what the chord progression for this song is?

  • @anthonysimeon It is one of the old Real Books and there is a Pat Metheny Song Book that has it.

  • Comment removed

  • in my opinion, the '80 version here on youtube is superior to this. the faster tempo really brings out the energy of the compisition.

  • Mark Egan playing a song called "Jaco"

  • What a classic. Mark must have taken the fret wires off his bass to get that sound.

  • Funny how after all these years, what do I play every day? This Pat CD, George's Breezin and Blood Sweat & Tears 2nd album (God Bless the Child). Great songs, great musicians, they got every part of it right. Listen to each of them real close, and loud. Makes you happy.

  • @gaspo218 used to go to sleep with God bless the child or Sweet baby james every night for years on my 8 track / 33 1/3 am fm stereo unit i won at bingo. luckiest day of my life.that and the music saved my life. (my sister bogarted the only other record player in the house). thanks for bringing back the memory.

  • He was born on August 12th 1954, so on tihs video he was probably 23.

And I agree with JustAintthatWay, the album version is uncomparable, even though I like these live versions I see on youtube, I think they just don't quite capture it

  • the studio version track of 'jaco' clocks in over 6 minutes the last 90 seconds or so is absolutely musical magic

i mean it takes you 'there' like very few songs can

this live take doesnt quite capture it

but then again those magic moments are

indeed very few and far between

and so im thankful the original album take

    was caught for posterity

but this 'tube is way cool too

    t/y for it

  • i'm having the same feelings with 'lone jack', i think it's this mix, very muddy, what caused the record to sound that awesome.

  • @JustAintthatWay yes, the guitar sound here especially isn't recorded as cleanly as on the album.

  • @JustAintthatWay yes the last 90' are divine!!

  • Are you sure that is Jaco?

    It just can't be

  • Mark Egan on bass ....not Jaco.

  • Its Mark Egan, the song is titled "Jaco".

  • The best Metheny line-up ever was his

trio with Jaco Pastorius and Bob Moses IMO.

  • how could one disagree ?

    except ...

    i gotta have lyle mays

tho i think jaco was just too wired to go

    'subtle' w/ pat

moses tho ... good call there

    much as dig wertico's stuff

  • @JustAintthatWay The one in the drums is not Wertico but Danny Gottlieb

  • @dgmquito yes friend im aware i was mistaken tho about the length of the

    studio version track

that one there's that short bridge thing about 4:24 when the great mays

comes back then to 4:40 when pm hits a chord that's 'it'

there to the end around 5 1/2 minutes ...

that's 'magic time baby' as the (also) great phil hartman doing his frank sinatra imitation used to say

& yeah they do look young hell doing overseas gigs while still in your

    early 20s? pretty cool ...

  • How old is he here... 20 something?

  • I believe he was 27 here and those are real clams-after all it's the head not a solo., but so the f*ck what? This was my favorite band in the world (and still is and I am lucky to have seen this lineup in a small club in SF in 1978. One of the best shows ever. I still remember it clearly. They even played "Close to Home" a tune that eventually made its way onto Lyle May's 1st CD. Tney called it "Mars" (lol)

  • Great performance! I was shocked to hear Pat make a mistake at 2:47 AND at 3:00. He hits a note in the major scale a couple of times. It happens to everyone. It won't make me stop admiring him. Maybe it was the new guitar that he had to get used too......

  • I've heard those kinds of things a lot from Pat at that time. He may have done it on purpose. You can't blame it on the guitar he had been playing for 11 years at that time.

  • Mmm don't know if it's a mistake, Metheny goes of the scale a lot lol. He's so damn good he can just play w/e sounds good, he doesn't even think about scales and frets.

  • so he is human!!!!! :)

  • These guys were smokin here, just like the album !! Gives me chills. 12.5.09

  • The very first bass song and bass solo that I learned was this song when I was 20 years old!

  • This was the original PMG lineup. Metheny, Mays, Egan & Gotlieb.

  • and still the best Pat lineup ever.

  • They're little kids! Hilarious

  • I THOUGHT THAT LOOK LIKE MARK!!!!!!!!

  • This is the song "Jaco" written by Pat, my mistake. Lol!

  • This is Mark Egan on bass, not Jaco. Great solo Mark!

  • is someone making FUN

  • great music..........thanks for public this video...
