how about we ask what people want in general. what does it take for a person to be happy? we don't have to play into gender roles or bring up stereotypes. i think, as a person, i just want [in this order]: food, shelter, and company. and that company is where the breakdown is. company qualifications: respectful and attractive, and that could be attractive in looks or personality. respectful comes first though.
Women want to be loved, and to feel like they have a place. They want guys to be honest, unless they ask those rhetorical questions like "do I look fat in this?". I'm afraid that question has no answer :P i.e., if it's true, lie your butt off, because she's happy as long as she thinks you find her attractive at what she thinks is not her best :)

People put to much thought into gender and their potential differences. Everyone has a different personality so that means everyone has different ways of behaving and different "wants" - generally what a person thinks they want will tend to not be present in who they will end up liking.
The most important thing is that people have fun whilst still respecting others' feelings (as much as possible anyway).
Male or Female, we're still just human. I think we all have issues understanding what other people want, but this problem is highlighted more intensely in a close relationship. If you get right down to it (past the food, sex and kittens) we all just want to be loved and appreciated.

Women just want a guy to care, really. It doesn't have to be expensive gifts or huge date nights or something (though I wouldn't be one to complain)... but if the guy just bothers a little, remembers small things she says, listens to her (and actually pays attention), and makes her feel special... that's all a girl wants.
Besides food, sex and cute kittens, of course.

I'm an 18 year old chick, and I think both sexes are just scared of eachother. Which is dumb, as we're all human. Talking helps a lot.
