Ed might not have had talent, but he more than made up for it in passion. Just goes to show you, never let people tell you you're bad at doing something you love--even if they're right.
With the history of Ed Wood, it's hard to criticize any of his movies. Their intentionally created by him to be bad movies. Ah, well, at least this one is more amusing with or without the MST3K riffs.
@RichterTheEternal -I think everyone acknowledges that it`s hard to criticise Ed Wood films...so very, very hard...You`re almost as big a genius as him.
@RichterTheEternal I'm afraid Ed thought every one of his films was a "good movie". He did NOT set out to make bad films-- They are not parodies. There was no sense of irony at all in the man. This really does represent the best Mr. Wood could do. His one admirable trait was his sincerity.
@GoblinXXX Really??...Wow. The man had his own vision. Shame it wasn't mutual to most critics and audiences alike on what makes a good movie. I suppose you can put him on the level as more of an artist than a movie maker. His "art" seemed more beautiful to him than anyone else could see.
@RichterTheEternal Wood's problem was, he just plain didn't know what he was doing: He had no idea what a director was SUPPOSED to do, as far as setting up shots or telling the actors how to act-- He never shot more than one take, for god's sake. And he was forever trying to do things his minuscule budgets couldn't pull off.
Start with Ed Wood. Fold in a generous helping of Bela Legosi and add one Tor Johnson. Let sit for an hour and serve atop stale bread. For additional appeal, season with saw dust.
Yeah, I suppose hanging around a barren, icky swamp is the hotspot for a local town drunk to get his drink on. Hell, he also might be able to fish for some "red herring" while he's there. Sheesh! I thought at first this scene at the police station meant this barfly had some connection with Bela, but of course he's just there for comedy relief (as if this film didn't have enough of that) with no connection at all with the plot, because we never see him again in the whole movie.
@negascoot23 Was this the film Wood made immediately before "Plan 9 From Outer Space" with Bela? I don;t know how far into Plan 9, but I think Bela keeled over dead. Anyhow PLAN 9 has consistently been voted the worst movie of all time. The stand-in they put in for Bela was hilarious.
Bela died before Plan 9 was even in production: His "scenes" in the film were footage Wood shot with Bela just for fun, basically. After he died, Wood took that footage and built a movie around it, using a stand-in for the rest of the scenes of Bela's character.
And Plan 9 is nowhere NEARLY the worst movie ever made--not anymore, at least...Most recent polls give that honor to "Manos" The Hands of Fate.

You're amazing for posting this! Thank you so much.
Although, admittedly, I no longer get anything done, as I'm typically too busy watching MST3K.
Worth it.

Wow, if you ever saw Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" you would appreciate the crappiness of this film in a much deeper way.

@negascoot23 All I know is that in the 80s Plan 9 was voted the worst movie ever made by a lot of critics. But thanks for the info.
