The mox8 does sound thinner...but it has an audio interface, a ton of sounds and software bundled into it......value wise the mox8 wins hands down...but if you want to miss out based on 1 patch..go ahead...
if you own either one of the instrument like i do you know that you can make both of the instrument sound like the other, its all just up to your super simple tweaking. e.g. increase the cutoff on the mox or change the velocity switches to allow hard string from velocity 0-127 then you will have a kurzweil sound. enjoy the demo and stop bitchin yamaha and kurz does not pay you to promote them!!
Kurzweil has the more capable instrument. Sound is subjective and very personal - so listen and choose. Just keep in mind for playing music, the quality of the board, feel, it's editing capability, and versatility are important. I have a PC3 and have had no issues with integration of my DAW (Ableton). Not sure what problems others experienced, but likely they could have been easily overcome with little effort. The Kurzweil is a professional board and targeted at musicians who perform live.
The piano and orchestral sounds are definitely better on the Kurzweil, but given the price difference and the 355mb of waverom in the Yamaha, and not to mention the AD input that lets you run a guitar, bass, or mic through its effects and over 6000 arpeggios all at $1699. The MOX8 is a better board, and with the left over cash you could buy say the NI Komplete Ultimate softsynth bundle. Together the MOX8 and NI Komplete would be a better choice imho, for orchestral.
what was the first one. I may sell my mox8 for a piaggero cuz the mox8 is to complex and it needs good speakers for good sound which are extremely expensive. So
I tried the MOX and the sounds were really impressive, but the lack of aftertouch kills it as a master controller in my opinion. Kurzweil all the way.
If there's anything to learn from this clip, it's that you can't go wrong with a modern workstation synth. I'm a Kurzweil user, so I ought to be biased, but damn, they both sound pretty awesome to me!
This is what I heard... 1. Piano Demo Winner: Kurtweil PCLE8 Why: Notes very crisp/Wider stage with a brighter more dynamic presence... 2. Electric Piano Winner: Yamaha MOX8 Why: Smoother cleaner sound with a controlled amount of distortion to maintain character; More ambiance with more of a soulful feel than the Kurzweil 3. Organ Winner: MOX8 Why: More clean & composed / took me to Church 4. Strings/Orchestra Winner: Kurzweil Why: More of a Live//Dynamic presence Great Demo!!!
The pc3 is miles beyond the all plastic mox8. Own a pc3 and pc3le8, xs6 is not even close. Have Korg boards and roland. Huge korg m3-88 with internal and external radias installed and no match for the kurweils. You will never run out of new sounds with them but you will with the others. The programming is not hard at all and the little display is misleading as to how fast you can get anywhere on this all steel boards...Just Incredible
@Tyventia Agree.. I had a KORG and the programming is hell of a task. I can do it faster on the Kurzweil. and assigning knobs and controllers are so much easier on the Kurzweil.
The Kurzweil PC3 series is unparalleled in the world of professional performance keyboards. Whereas other brands including Yamaha and Roland might have certain appeal to aspiring "basement recording studios" (much like a Thomas Organ in the 60s--with all the drum accompaniments and one-finger chords would appeal to the masses versus a "bland" Hammond B3 with "drawbars and very few buttons"), if you are a musician and want the best board for performing--Kurzweil wins, hands down.
Au contraire, my Uninformed friend: The LE series REPLACED the PC3, 361 and X keyboards. You can no longer count on these being available for new purchase. So in the most traditional terms: The LE is BACKWARDS of what Kurzweil HAD. Budget version, for sure, but your response infers that the consumer has a CHOICE (which it no longer does). And as to the "failure" of Kurzweil vs. Yamaha in studio environs: That assertion can only be based on USER vs. HARDWARE. The Kurzweil excels.
Kurzweil went backwards with this LE series. The PC3s (without the "LE") were a far superior instrument for both live and studio applications. The KB3 (Hammond organs/Leslie effects) alone was worth the price of admission and rivaled the best clonewheels in the market. Kurzweil's pianos and strings are unequaled. I'd put a PC3 up against any of today's keyboards for live performing.
Your statement is a complete misnomer, because the LE series is simply a budget version of the PC3 series and wasn't designed to be a successor to the flagship PC3 series & therefore,it is not a step backwards, but a step down.
If the new flagship PC3K series cut corners in any way, than this could be defined as a step backwards.
While I would agree that Kurzweil has the edge for live use,Kurzweil as a company, fails miserably in terms of recording,in contrast to Yamaha.
Reasons being,is that the PC3,LE and K series don't have any real PC integration, apart from being a simple midi controller and having a sound editor for the LE series.
Recording in terms of sequencing,is a terrible joke,as the on-board sequencer & menus just kill your workflow and what compounds this problem 10 times over,is you don't have the option to use the on-board sounds as VST's,so only live performances can be recorded via an audio interface.

Kurzweil has an incredibly flexible synth engine, great sound layering and excellent key-bed action-which makes it ideal for live use,but that's all.
Kurzweil should have never given their consumers the illusion that this keyboard is a recording tool,by including a sequencer, because it's virtually useless for complete song production purposes.
I've known several people who don't use the sequencer and my LE6 is nothing more than a expensive midi controller with really nice key-action.
I'm not out to trash Kurzweil or anything, but as a programmer who works heavily with sequencing and who's live playing is secondary, the recording limitations of the Kurzweil is absolutely terrible, compared to the Yamaha MOX series.
Since I have both budget versions of these keyboards,I have done some very close & extensive comparisons between the two and although each keyboard has it's certain advantages over the other...ultimately,Yamaha wins big.
..engine,but I spent a couple of hours today, just running through the program presets of my MOX6 and saving them into my favorites.
All of the brass, woodwinds, drums,e.pianos and synth sounds of the MOX are just as good to my ears and with the included sound editor in Cubase,I don't see any real advantage that the PC3 series has.
The e.basses in the MOX are much better and the effects of the MOX are on par with the PC3's.The best advantage of the MOX6,is the Cubase AI5...in fact....
..the MOX's overall package of options is better than anything else that is out there, amongst budget workstations.
I never even intended to buy another hardware workstations, because of the two software DAWS I have, but the MOX6 offered so much for such a reasonable price, that I couldn't pass it up.
With the MOX6,I have all of the bread and butter sounds that my software programs didn't provide and I saved myself a lot of PC processing power at the same time.
The Kurzweil patches are clearly more realistic and richer than the tinny sounds coming out of this Yamaha ! Kurzweil always stands out on recordings relative to Yamaha sounds.
I'm curious as to why you think so highly of the M50 and have so little regard for the MOX? I've owned nothing but Korgs for 23 years(including the M50) and I now own the MOX.
The MOX has a much better selection & sample quality of drum sounds, synth pads, piano sounds and guitar sounds, than the M50.
Even though the MOX doesn't have as much on-board insert effects as the M50,the MOX has better sounding effects and the MOX comes with Cubase AI5(with plenty of insert effects,48 tracks....
...& 2 VST's.The MOX has a built in audio interface,a complete array of DAW controls, built in memory, direct performance recording,key-triggered recording,355MB of ROM and the full sound engine of it's bigger brother....all of which the M50 does NOT have.
The M50 is a closed box with toy pianos sounds, only 256MB of ROM and you have to pay extra,if you want the Karma software(which is only a sound editor).
Buy an MOX and spend a week with it,before you say the M50 is so superior.
@dabull136 Depends on what are you looking for.. If you play around with a lot of arps. Yamaha have the edge. if you're more on the pro side. looking for deep architecture and controls. Kurzweil beats Yamaha. and pros don't mind paying 300 -500 more for that.
@dabull136 Well. Couldn't deny that Yamaha has done a good job in this. Low budget home studio... big bang for the buck.. This is probably made to compete with M50 and the Juno lines. but kurzweil is in a differrent category altogether. PC3 = performance controller.. means they did not include all that home studio stuff on purpose..
Piano sounds on both of these keyboards are very lush & authentic sounding,so it is ludicrous to have a debate over the piano programs.
These keyboards are both WORKSTATIONS,so it would be more useful to compare features, options and recording workflow.
While the PC3LE6 does have deeper synth editing & a true semi-weighted keybed, the PC3LE6 costs $300 more and you have to pay extra for the program editor software.
Aside from the program editing software and basic midi controller functions....
...the PC3LE6 has no other PC integration, whatsoever. The on board sequencer and effects routing on the PC3LE6 is very tedious & pretty much useless and the only way to record your on board sequences onto your DAW,is to run audio cables through your PC audio interface.
Incidentally, good luck trying to synchronize your PC3LE6's on board sequences with your DAW's sequences, because the starting point on the PC3LE6's on board sequences is a fraction of a second off.
As a matter of fact, the PC3LE6 is virtually useless as a recording tool, which is why I only use it as a midi controller and what a f**king waste of beautiful sounds this keyboard is.
As an instrument for live use and gigging, this keyboard is ideal-but apart from that, the PC3LE6 is a joke, compared to the MOX6.
Since I had the 61 key versions of these keyboards on the brain,I should mention that there is a $300 difference between the 61 key models, but you get the point.
Those ways "to compare" are senseless. Those instruments - both - have so many damn parameters and its always up to the programmer who pushed some frequencies up that make it sound "meatier, clearer, punchier, thinner" or whatelse. Both instruments have multiband-EQ´s that turn an AC from a bright hammering thing to a trashcan, with the same samples. Not to speak of filter-settings and more synth-parameters or DSPs.
Kurzweil wuld cut through a band better but the MO is way meatier. So the higher you move up the kurzweil, it gets more synthy, almost plasticky if you will. I like the MO more. IMHO. I guess everyone has a way they like to sound. :)
wow amazing. I never thought a Motif to sound thin- I always put that on Korg. But the Kurzweil definitely sounds fatter and warmer. This is disappointing because I was excited for this MOX8 and some of the features it has.
I've been looking for a new synth (I'm mostly a player, it would need to be useful live for my prog-symphonic metal band) going through the offerings of the top 3 brands Roland, Korg and Yamaha as they're easiest to find on the market.
This video really confirms something I've learned tonight from my e-research: I've made a serious, glaring omission!
The Motif has and always will have that processed ear candy sound......Kurzweil has the realism. When pit against each other as seen here, it becomes blatant. The only slight advantage I noticed the Yamaha have over the Kurzweil was the acoustic piano in the higher octaves. Other than that, It's a no brainer but strangely enough, ALL musicians i know love that Motif / over-processed sound.
You can definitely hear the difference between the two keyboards. The Yamaha mox *doesn't* have limited editing. It comes with an editor where you can edit up to 8 elements/ oscillators for your chosen sounds. Don't believe me, check out the review from SonicState.
@vierge99 If you want power.. Got for the PC3. sound processing.PC3 is really good for creating new sounds and in depth editing. If you want Brand. go for Yamaha. Limited editing. no after touch. but tons of arps. Key action. Kurzweil has got a better touch.
Kurzweil has a warmer and authentic sound. Hmm I'll choose the Kurzweil for its synthesis power, 16 layers on the Kurz plus keymaps editing vs 4 layers on the MOX and limited editing. Cheers
Most akkor vegyem meg mindkettőt? :-D

@Keysquall I play in a band covering all the symphonic stuff too. and nothing beats the Kurzweil sounds and dynamics.

Em timbre de piano, o MOX é melhor sem duvidas !

You can definitely hear the difference between the two keyboards. The Yamaha mox *doesn't* have limited editing. It comes with an editor where you can edit up to 8 elements/ oscillators for your chosen sounds. Don't believe me, check out the review from SonicState.

@CristiPuiaProduction
The superiority of the piano tone synthesizer from Yamaha is unquestionable. They are two great keyboards, but the Yamaha is much better

You are comparing Kurzweil's 90's samples with Yamaha's 2010's samples. But still the Kurzweil samples win hands down.

How does the keybed compare on these two units? Also, does the PC3 offer any kind of sampling capabilities?

@vierge99 If you want power.. Got for the PC3. sound processing.PC3 is really good for creating new sounds and in depth editing. If you want Brand. go for Yamaha. Limited editing. no after touch. but tons of arps. Key action. Kurzweil has got a better touch.

@cvl85 Now PC3LE have new OS 2.0 and VAST is open, so you can edit sounds as you wish.

@vierge99 Yes, the PC3K. It uses the Fatar TP40L keybed which is wonderful.

For strings and Orchestral patch.. Kurzweil really out done the Yamaha. But Yamaha did a great job on the audio interface

Kurzweil has a warmer and authentic sound. Hmm I'll choose the Kurzweil for its synthesis power, 16 layers on the Kurz plus keymaps editing vs 4 layers on the MOX and limited editing. Cheers

Kurzweil poops on Yamaha in the synthesis terms.Maybe the acoustic piano is better in the Mox,but ALL the other sounds??Nah,I prefer Kurz, for sure.

Most akkor vegyem meg mindkettőt? :-D

Thank you the comparison. Very helpful.
I liked the Yamaha MOX much better.
Both sound very good to me.
Thumbs up to Yamaha!
