Well, I kind of have to disagree there. What people don't seem to get is that Mangini did nothing at all with the drumtracks on this album. Petrucci "wrote" them, and Mangini simply recorded them, which is actually bad for Mangini concidering how he was to replace Portnoy (who we all know is a god).

But just wait. When they make another album, Mangini's greatness will shine through, and people will stop whining about who's best. DT will continue to be the best for ages.

Was anyone else surprised by the fact that On the Backs of Angels was nominated? I'd have more hope in, say, Breaking All Illusions. Nonetheless, I praise them for their nomination!

Portnoy was good, Mangini is better. Without Portnoy's input, John was able to work alone, creating different ideas, and a different sound altogether. And voila, here is the product! Dream Theater is still evolving, and they're just getting better and better! I have doubts for them winning the Grammy, simply because they're not quite as well known and appreciated by most people, but hey, a nomination is amazing!

kinda hate to say it but..... mike #2 is a better drummer. actually gives them another dimension, a different tonal quality. much more musical, and i noticed they played around with some new and totally different things. cant say they could have achieved it with portnoy. mike portnoy is and always will be the heart of DT and one of the all time greatest, but a good change for petrucci and the gang

@BandLeader1020 I actually kind of agree with you. Although I believe Portnoy is one of the top 3 drummers in the world, maybe of all time, Mangini is also one of those top 3. And you are right, this album has a different feel from the Portnoy albums, it's almost as if they have progressed to another level with the sound. Oh, and btw, Mangini's drum solo at the San Diego show was one of the greatest solos I have ever seen. Better than anything I have ever seen Portnoy do!  It was insane.

I was at a concert of theirs and ten minutes into the show, the mixer left because he wasn't needed anymore. I will grant you that Dream theater does quite out-class them, but they've earned their respect in the community, as have Dream Theater

It all seems a bit doomsday-ish. then the lyrics of "we spiral toward disaster" "your days are numbered" etc. almost as if they're suggesting that the american empire is about to collapse/end?
