Katie- PLEASE take this video down and do another one the right way... Starting with basic Air Support. You are giving horn teachers a bad rep... Thanks!
@Nailsdewed No. A second line G on the horn is a concert middle C. On a trumpet the same pitch is written as a D immediately below the staff. (F in F horn stands for F, not French, meaning that reading a C plays the pitch of F. Similarly, on a Bb trumpet, reading a C gives the pitch of Bb). Of course, most horns are double horns with an F and a Bb, meaning if the horn player knows how to hold a button down he/she can play trumpet music easily, besides perhaps parts in the high register.
@Nailsdewed I returned my rental a long time ago. I wish I could give you an answer without any doubts, but I believe it starts on C on paper just like a trumpet. I'm not a reliable source for only playing it a month and returning, but I believe that's correct.
I've rented my first french horn and today is the first day I've ever played french horn in my life. Being a trumpeter, the fingerings come naturally and the lip levels somewhat naturally...But being a trumpeter and a trombonist, I'm used to the presence of a water key...and it doesn't have one...What do I do?
Generally you get used to pulling the slides out and dumping out the water. That's normal for hornists. You will get to where you can do it even in a two measure rest. You could get water keys added to the horn, but I don't have any recommendation about that. Good luck.
Wowzers, she's helpful. I'm glad these were posted on here. However, does anyone know of a video where the emouchure is explained a bit more extensively? I'm experienceing seriouse troubles with that, and I already know about the tight corners and flat cheeks thing. I'm not quite sure where to put my mouth on the mouthpiece (more top or lower lip) or how (if) that would change going higher/lower... So much more; if someone would inform me of a certain video that is like that, I'd appreciate it.
@rachel25lee This differs slightly from person to person. Generally I think it's close to half and half, but for me (for example) [gets out instrument and pretends to make sound...] I think I sometimes use slightly more bottom lip than top (esp. in extreme high register), or if I'm playing long passages in a very low register (almost exclusively used with passages written entirely in bass clef) I'll occasionally use much more top than bottom lip.
Stankinator911, aaaaaah, I see. I attempted that last year in band, and I found it worked a tad more efficiently. Thank you very much for your input. XD ~Appreciations!!!
i played french horn last year and soon next year but this summer i forgot to practice so now i can not buzz right. I dont think my director with have tome help me because i will be in symphonic band and they expect me to remember someone who is a current french horn player please help me i do not have the right face anymore I NEED A FRENCH HORN TEACHER where is mr.lambercht!!
Lol , i'm a french hornist and actuually she is holding the french horn the correct way . is just that she need to show us how she play so she has to hold it high up . And holding it high up need that posturee, humm .
Guys, you may want to shut up about her posture. You guys don't know why she plays like that. There may actually be a reason. I have scoliosis, and I hunch over when I sit and play. I can't help that because my spine is shaped like a damn S. Maybe think before saying such rude things. And the french horn can have a lot of sounds. It can be smooth and mellow, or it could be loud and agressive. It's a very versitle instrument.
are u guys idiots? her tone is very good and always constant. You people keep saying her posture is bad... posture depends upon the horn player and the horn. it varies depending on how you play the horn. Stop flaming good videos for no reason. anyways i've been playing for a few years and I'm sure this would have helped me when i was just starting out.
I'm sorry, but the form just isn't good. And aren't French Horns suppose to sound graceful? I've been playing French Horn for a while, and, mine doesn't sound at all like that. I'm so sorry, but I just don't find this very good.
@smacktalking the french horn i borrowed from the school(which i play at home because i play 3 instuments, trumpet, cornet, and french horn) and the french horn i play at school(another students) sound completely different!
Ummmm.........You need to improve your posture. When you start your posture is ok, but as you progress you become more and more hunched over. making it harder for you to get the full amount of air through your lungs and out your horn. Like my band directors say, " You are your french horn's master, your french horn does what you tell it to do. So therefore you bring the french horn to your mouth, don't move your mouth to the french horn."
hold it almost up vertically cuz i was told by my band director to do that cuz i play it too but dont hold it too vertically just a slant to the left a lil
its a really good method, but shes holding the horn in the wrong posistion. how can you play hunched over- you dont get enought air into your lungs!! but great technique thanx
This lady needs to play in front of a mirror inorder to fix her problem of playing with her head at a downward angle. That's just bad form, and to think she is "instructing" people on technique and method.
I have a tip for you: If you want that your sound is better, you shoud try to put your head straight and your chin up. so the air can flow better and you will get a better sound. For the rest i think you do a great job by introducing the french horn on the internet
Well, find something to motivate you to want to get better. Otherwise you'll never learn because you know that it's not fun and that's not good. If you want to get good at something, make it fun! Also, work on scales, slurs and the works. Good luck.
Consider doing a whole series of advance horn techniques e.g. how to work up a concerto, transpositon issues, section playing and the special techniques for each chair, double and triple tonguing etc. You do a great job and could build on these introductory tutorials.
