  • I noticed the train does not give you alot of warning. the train is going 70 mph and the bars go down when the train is less than a quarter mile...not alot of time

  • I've lived in the neighborhood by that crossing for 12 years. I remember that day.

  • out of millions of people, let's pretend "nobody" died...

  • I live in a neighborhood next to that part of the yard I remember seeing this when it happened.

  • well she wont make that mistake again

  • the fact that it was the center passenger side leans more to this being a murder suicide! Had this been "an accident" at least, she would have taken the risk of beating the train if it were a drivers side impact, you feel me? Just giving my opinion, the last sentence is correct! People gotta be aware of whats going on..... terrible, just terrible...... r.i.p to the victims... and fuck b.p.

  • I can never get this... why in the world would anyone drive past the damn bars! you hear the whistle.. LOOK! see the BARS! that means a Freakin' train is steaming at U!

This seem more like a murder suicide! I bet if you look back into the drivers history and maybe who she had in the car.. 5 people!!! aww yeahh, that's bloody murda! r.i.p to the victims

  • Was either suicide with complete disregard for passengers. A group suicide. Or the bars hitting her windshield made her forget how to put the vehicle in R for race.

  • Also like to mention that that girl is probably the worst news reporter I have ever heard. I now understand why they talk the way they do in news reports.

  • @zebatov No, it was just stupidity.

  • way to go woman.

  • 5 in one, fucking awsome :D I'm glad that everyone of those people are dead!

  • @Polybun I HOPE U DIE STUPID FUCK

  • @TheJimenez209 well, you'll get your wish, as we all die sooner or later. However, I won't die by train.

  • Some people need to learn how to drive.

If the gate was against her windshield, she would have been 'out of foul' - clear of any part of the train, and be OK.

Had I been behind her, I would have backed up and gotten out and calmly directed her to stay.

Or gotten in and backed her vehicle myself - as I have done for people stuck in snow.

She may have panicked and went forward when she meant to reverse.

    Automatic or stick shift?

  • how about how the engineer feels? i am an engineer and I'll tell you it sucks when a selfish person gets on the tracks regardless if its suicide or by accident. stay away from the trcks there is a big enough world out there.

  • This was my 1st 'incident' as an employee working the train. Because of that, these souls passing will probably be part of my consciousness for the rest of my life. May they rest in peace, but more importantly, may the ones they left behind live in peace, knowing that there were many there that are still thinking and praying for them.

  • @lochmabon stop being such a pussy. Stupid people die, that's just how it is. It isn't tragic, it isn't sad, it's just life. The ones they left behind now got a valuable lesson in several things. 1. don't let friends be idiots. 2. don't fuck about near the rail. Everyone of those fucking morons had heard the that message over and over. They chose to ignore it. Good fucking riddance.

  • @Polybun you are disgusting; she "heard the message", the bar fell on her car and got stuck, she panicked, went to pull forward but her accelerator didnt work as fast as she hoped. she had only seconds to save her life, and unfortunately that didnt happen but that doesnt mean she was stupid. this is a heartless comment

  • @MissCheshireCat19 Like I said, stupid people die. People that can't make rational decisions have it coming.

  • @Polybun you can't really believe that? what about those killed in war? on 911? in hiroshima? someone mugged on the street? children starving in 3rd world countries? mistakes happen, that doesnt make people stupid

  • @MissCheshireCat19 All of that is different, save for the children starving in the third world. Those kids are starving because their parents are morons. They didn't choose to control their reproductive habits. They didn't choose to learn modern farming. Hell they aren't even using medevil farming technologies.

Dying doesn't make you stupid, but some of the ways a person can die does. Getting hit by a train is one of those. Ignoring signals is a choice, not a mistake.

  • its funny how it seems that more people die riding amtrack then freight

  • No passengers died riding 'on' this Amtrak train & few die from riding any Amtrak trains. The incidents where that has happened are few & far between. In fact, riding trains is one of the safest ways to travel compared to other forms of transportation.

As for death by trains, more die getting hit by oncoming Amtrak trains than freight trains because they fail to realize Amtrak trains move faster, and quieter, than freight trains. Amtrak trains are allowed this because they can stop quicker.

  • It was the worst accident I have ever seen. My 23 career in the fire service ended right after this wreck. I still think about those 3 little ones in the back seat. I'll never forget... but I wish I could.

  • :'(( I wish you could too.

  • 5 darwin awards given out

  • Sounds like the woman panicked. Doesn't sound to me like she was trying to commit suicide, but rather, she just panicked, and couldn't think straight. She thought she could make it forward, instead of backing up. Maybe I'm wrong, but in any case...Sad. RIP whoever they all were.

  • From what the engineer told me, we both agreed that she must have panicked, and possibly even thought she was in reverse. Whatever the case, if she had just stayed put, they would have all been okay. Initially, she was NOT on the tracks themselves, but sitting where the gate came down on the hood of her car.

  • I bet the woman in the car was trying to commit a murder suicide.

  • No one deserves to die, especially kids! But, drivers need to start being smarter at railroad crossings. A train hitting a car, is like a car hitting an empty coke can!

  • LOL, thinning the heard folks! thinning the heard! Trains are not on tracks by accident, stupid people get what they deserve.

  • I bet, she thought she had the reverse gear as she steped lightly the gas. Instead she still had D and that was fatal.

  • this should teach yalls a lesson: the train always wins in a battle if witts

  • yea definetly suicide

  • apparently she was either just to scared to move the car or she was either committing suicide but still thats a same

  • Lol, why try amis all the time to beat the train. There are so much vidoes about crashs with trucks, cars tec on youtube.

  • If the gates are down, they're down for a reason, a train is coming. If the lights are flashing, the gates are coming dowm, DON"T TRY TO BEAT THE TYRAIN... YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTIME! Treat ANY track as a live track because the time you don't will be the time there's a train coming.

  • Its simple really,

the car was a small suv..more than likely produced in Japan, Right?

when a japanese produced car has locked onto co-ordinates with train tracks and are sent back too the HQ of the car manufacturer the manufactures sent a command to permantly lock the car doors and they use a killswitch on the engine.

therefore the people get hit by the train.. and japan are one step closer to taking over the world by taking out the USA firstly.

Who's with me on my ludacris theory? :)

  • This news reporter sucks! Total amateur.

  • wat a bitch

  • she hated every one

  • a penny will not derail a train i dont care if you stand it on its head holding a nickel

if you think a penny will derail a train you dont or never have worked for a railroad

  • that sounds nothing short of suicidal, but why did she take everyone with her?

  • all u gotta do is get outa the car, fuck the car

  • that sounded suicidal to me man no doubt about it!

  • who cares?

  • Psychologists, sociologists, friends, family, local undertakers just to name a few hundred people and possibly thousands that would find this story interesting if we could know more about the motives.

Then there are crash engineers which would have loved to have acquired the figures for the impact.

    The list goes on.

  • yor talking about red light and green, I have no ideah if thats possible you would have to ask some one in signal department (never heard of something like that happening) in train service terms that would be a stop indication and Clear indication. that would have to be one llllllooooooonnnnggggg penny to short contacts.

  • I can send a lazer dynometer test car down the tracks of your hometown and with in a mile I will find 200-400 flaws on avarage. Although your chance of derailing a train with a penny is about 1 in 500 your also damaging the rail and wheels on the engines and cars.

  • Oh yeah Robertgift, a hairline fracture in a rail can be cause in a derailment, stress, and a rail lifted up just the size of a nail. you catch it with a flange and kiss that train goodbye. Work for LORAM Railgrinders and you will see what im talking about. hairline fractures can cause the rail to crack.

  • BullS$%^&- my company tested this, Im not saying how to do it because all people with to much time on there hands will go do it.

Something for you to think about (why do you think railroads spend millions to rail grinding services?) to grind flaws on the rails, some you wouldnt see with your eyes.

I spent time on a MOW crew, so I kinda know what im taking about ROBERTGIFT

  • I also have worked.

Grinding DOES NOT remove internal flaws.

A penny physically cannot derail a train unless you use it to close relay contacts to display a red signal before a train with a green. Hopefully the engineer would not dump air (apply full emergency braking) and cause any cars to derail.

We're not talking about rail flaws and fractures. Yes, rails are FULL of insignificant flaws. American rails are excellent.

  • I'm sure the engineer dumped the air, as thats what they're trained to do in a collision. An emergency brake application WILL NOT cause a train to derail, in fact trains go into emergency unintentionally all the time. As for the quality of American rails...

  • You're right. "Dump if you Bump"

Yes, cars can and have derailed from dumping air, especially bad when the brake was "big holed" for a missed collision.

I would never dump air if doing so would do no good. No use risking derailment, which could result in far worse outcome than killing the moron(s) fouling the track - who WILL BE HIT ANYWAY.

Imagine also how many wheels may be flattened and need to be replaced?

    No, slow the train sensibly.

American rails are VERY good, considering ...

  • I agree with you to a certain extent, but you always have to cover your own ass first. I was taught from day one to dump the air if a collision looks eminent. The chance of derailment is very slim (unless other factors are present such as defective cars or track), and who cares about flat spots when you're talking about the potential loss of human life?

  • [Why do my replies NOT APPEAR UNDER your posts?]

Dumping air won't make one bit of difference.

Guy is dead anyway, slim possibility of derail, and now lots of flat wheels for nothing.

I'd flatten every wheel if it could save a life. But it won't. Locked wheels lose adhesion and create less deceleration than slowly turning wheels.

  • I've had a train separate at a speed of over 50mph. It went into emergency of course, and I had to walk it to inspect and find the separation. I did not derail, and I found no evidence of flat spots. Going into emergency is not a big deal. Do yourself a favor and plug it if your going to hit someone. Everything you do on that engine is recorded and an attorney will not hesitate to bring up the fact you didnt plug it, if it happens to go to a lawsuit. BTW which railroad do you work for?

  • I don't work for a RR. My Great Uncle, a locomotive engineer, told me.

What was the cause of the separation?

In Utah, in the middle of the night a train went into emergency. They reconnected the train and continued.

Next morning, in daylight, a car was found down the embankment! (Now they're required to count cars in such events.)

Are brakes getting better? Uncle pointed out lots of flat spots - you heard them. Some really pounded the rail.

Yes, the event recorder will be examined.

  • I've had several train separations in my career. In this case it was a broken knuckle, but they can separate for numerous reasons (open pin lifters, rotated couplers, drawbars, etc.) The railroad I work for does not require you to count the cars if you break apart. Double check with your uncle. If you hit a vehicle you plug it from the head end and the rear end if you have an EOT (end of train device) or a DPU (distributed power unit) it is the fastest way to stop a train, thats why its there.

  • Me, thats who cares. Shit, one wheel is worth more than any dumbass that decides to drive out infront of a train. Give them a darwin award on the rollby.

  • Danm Kilrbe3 needs to take a asprine and calm down. Mizzchristie is 100% right, I have derailed because some punks decided to put a wheel barrow on the tracks, then in the same location the same jerks put a rail and wedged it in a bridge across the track and once again derailed me, for your information a penny can derail a train if you do it right.

  • A penny cannot derail a train unless it shorts relay contacts and turns a green signal red right before a moving train.

  • she tried to cross the tracks.........OKAY, when there down the means that something might be happening or coming. I dont work for NASA so I may have to look that one up. Im just another rail employee

  • oh yeah, as for the stupid news lady, the train didnt hit anything, its on tracks, its not likely it will steer out of the way to miss that idiot. the stupid idiot drove in front of the train. The train isnt at fault the idiot was

  • Man I completely agree.. The train couldn't steer if it wanted to!

  • this isnt a train wreck, its a auto accident. some jagg$%&* couldnt wait for 6 seconds for the train to cross, being a engineer and going threw this many times, I say the hell with them, your dumb enough to cut off a train your dumb enough to die

  • you say six died the video says 5

  • my husband works for a railroad . Thank god for letting him come home each day . As for people and theyer mistakes i feel no sadness . what about the guys who work on the train who could be killed ? Stop Look and listen . I think they teach that in school !

  • Your Husband will come home everynight, a 200 ton train vs a Car.. car has no chance.

  • yeah thats what everyone thinks but sometimes things happen that cant be explained . trains I am sure have D railed over smaller things then cars

  • She probably panicked. When you panic, you don't think clearly. I knew kid who was killed by a train. He was walking on the track which he shouldn't have been doing anyway, obviously, but when a train came along he could have just stepped off onto the grass, but instead he ran down the tracks & was killed by the train. Panic.

  • the worse news reporter ever...

  • well im not being mean but death is death, you cant change it. Just Deal with it, its sad and everything, but you know the old say ing SHIT HAPPENS!! I wish this wasnt true though. SO if people didnt make mistakes there wouldnt be a collision between a train and car every 90 mins. Im srry bout the loss though.

  • not to mention the train could've derailed and a lot of passengers could've been injured or killed

  • JAJAJA STUPID AMERICAN PEOPLE

  • Fuck You there are stipid people all over the world you fuck head.

  • i wonder how it feels to die in a trian accident.s it painful does it cascrate your body.and u would think with 5 people in the car some of them would have jumped out.

  • I doubt anyone in the SUV had a chance to get out when/if she suddenly moved forward. I would have expected her to back. Any info on the occupants?

Amazing how stupid some people can be. Kill 5 people rather than damage vehicle behind backing into it.

Or was Amtrak not visible because of other railcars?

    Thank you.

  • There were 2 adult women and 4 young children in the van. She stopped just short of the tracks, in traffic, before the gate came down and then appears to have panicked when the gate came down. Instead of backing up, she drove forward onto the tracks, just as the train came upon the crossing. The engineer informed me, if she had never moved her car, the train would most likely only hit her front bumper.

  • What is tragic is that the driver had her adopted son/nephew, who had already been through the loss his birth parents, at home waiting for them. The father, a truck driver, had to be flown in from another state and DNA tests had to be done to identify who was who with the remains in the vehicle. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and what was left of her was found about a mile back on the tracks from where the train stopped.

  • There is nothing tragic about any of this, they all deserved it. Trains are not on tracks by accident, cars are. Stop, Look, Listen, Live. Don't, and you get what you deserve.

  • Polybun...Are you saying infants deserve to get hit by trains?...because 4 of the occupants were children...and 2 of them were in car seats. If so, I can not fathom how you can come to that way of thinking.

  • @lochmabon Infants born from such stupid people do, yes. Nothing good would have come from children born to such moronic parents.

  • go screw yourself, how can you even think that people deserve to die, you stupid jackass. Yes it was their fault but we should take this accident and learn from it, dont point fingers at people.

  • Some people don't belong behind the wheel of a car... I blame the State for giving ANYONE a license with bare min. requirements to pass the test. The tests are so easy, might as well throw it away and hand out D.L.'s in cereal boxes.

  • Domb Broad!! I bet she tried to commit suicide.

  • "dumb" is how to spell it..

  • He probably nudged her forward. Why was he so close to her that the bar fell on her front windshield and he was a witness to that? There were, most likely, other vehicles behind him too. So, in effect, for him to pull back he was still an obstruction to other vehicles behind him. He must have had a small space for error. I suspect he knows more to the story than meets the eye!

  • So terribly sad. Totally preventable.

Do Mexicans just not know what to do?

    Not a suicide.

  • idk why everyone has opened their mouth when they dont know anything about this accident. i personally know 1 person that died in this accident. so for everyone who is saying this was a suicide you are wrong! we miss u and love u diana........

  • As one of the crew who worked this train, I can assure you it did affect us and we feel for those who lost members of their family in this. Because of how she reacted to the on-coming train, it appeared as a potential suicide, but witness evidence did show that it wasn't. If she had only stayed put and not moved her car like she did...:~(

  • There's another thing too. If it looks like you're not gonna make it, get out and run away from the tracks.

    Very sad.

Injuries to the passengers of the train...a small bump when the locomotive hit the SUV?

  • When the engineer plugs it - ie puts the train into emergency, the resulting slack action can very well take anyone who's not firmly seated and throw them into the nearest immovable object on the train. This is where the injuries will come from, not from the locomotive impacting the SUV, which in all odds, nobody either felt or recognized.

  • This slack action can even be severe enough to derail the train.

  • Only the driver has been identified "Maricruz Corral" 23 years old. Possibly her two sons, an adult passenger with 2 other young people. Very Sad

    RIP Maricruz and family

  • She started across before she could clear the tracks. The signals came on, and she backed up into the gate. She then pulled forward to try to make it across. Remember, don't pull onto the tracks until you can pull off.

  • i think maybe suicide, why wasn't she driving away or backing up, or even getting out of the car

  • It was not suicide. It was a mistake by a very young woman.

  • Oh man I heard about this at school! My friend actually saw this happen, that is really sad. The names are unknown, yeah to you guys I know who they are though because of my friend.

  • That sucks so bad : (

I've been the fireman to clean that up too, so I know what that's like first hand.
