Frankly the giant mutant squid ending of the graphic novel was a bit silly, and not prone to endure. By framing Dr. Manhattan you get rid of the distorting element he represents and Ozymandius preserved the ability to enforce his idea of peace. Let things get too far out of hand, then he cranks up his Dr. Manhattan device and delivers the faux message that Dr. Manhattan disapproves of how things are going. The space squid plan would fail as soon as the aliens didn't actually invade.
I think nobody could do a better job than zack snyder (the director of watchmen) he read the book as a kid and he is the best directer for this comic book movie.
loved the book, and loved the movie. I can appreciate the differences knowing that the story wasn't completely butchered and that this is an easier to swallow ending.
You guys have to remember what Dr. Manhattan stood for. Sure, he seemed "godly", but he was the lynchpin of US Security, and basically became a US symbol. Not to mention he was created on earth. Thats why I believe an outside force would have been more powerful for the ending.
And dont hate on the fanboys, its not a crime to have such admiration for source material.
Interesting that most of the STFU comments are about the squid, when the conversation in the clip is actually about the stylized violence, and how it wasn't needed, and perhaps overused. I agree that the squid might've been pushing it, but why would that be harder than accepting a good guy turned bad?
I never said that it would taint the book, just that its a shame it has to be dumb-ed down, and that in so doing the main message of superheroes in the as close to the real world as possible is lost.
And its sad to me that all of the hype stating "we stayed true to the spirit of the original" when the whole point of Watchmen was to place the Superhero in the unpredictable world we live in was such bullshit hype.
The characters remained true, but not the spirit and message of the story.
agreed man they need to shut the fuck up.. if they want that stupid squid in the movie and all the other shit they are much better off just watching the motion comics of watchmen.. no need to abuse the movie when these retarded fanboys havent even seen it yet.
As much as nit-picking drives me up the wall, this is one of those rare times where there is a legitimate gripe. If the new ending doesn't work right, it'll take the rest of the story out of context, literally. Everything in the book was put in for a specific reasoning/purpose and if the new ending doesn't shadow the author's intent, then why do it? It's not that people are mad because they changed the ending, but rather because it changes intent.
The philosophy of why changing the ending to blame Dr. Manhattan as opposed to some "other outside force" is way too much to get into in a text box. I'm not angry over them changing the ending or taking things out of context, I'm disappointed that they were given such a seminal work of literature (yes, literature) and chose to "interpret" it their own way.
But the changed ending wasn't that much of a stretch was it? They only changed "alien" squids with Dr. Manhattan as an imaginary threat, they didn't change the Veidt's motivation. Just a minor tweak, that actually worked just fine. All this fanboy shit is getting real old. You guys need to realize the differences and limitations between movies and comics and then not go see them if they upset you so much. And go check your bookshelves; Watchmen hasn't disintegrated, it's still there.
If you really think about it intellectually, Dr. Manhattan is not an "outside threat". Dr. Manhattan in the book and film, represented America. The aliens were a threat OUTSIDE of humanity. Snyder focused on crafting Ozy and didn't focus so much on the point that Ozy didn't create "peace based on a lie," he created peace based on threat so great there was no possible answer to it other than unification. It's not "fanboy shit", it's an intellectual response to an intellectual movie and book.
I state time and again in this vid that I'll enjoy both fuck head.
And I was completely bang-on in all my points after having seen it.
I enjoyed Watchmen then movie quite a bit, but it was silly drivel compared to the source, and missed all the points of realism that Moore made with his comic.
The giant squid tried absolute best to RUIN the graphic novel. Thankfully it didn't succeed but nearly.

And I agree.
Both are entertaining for what they are.
I actually thought that the way they shortened the movie via eliminating the squid was an act of genius.
And the opening montage was amazing.

The Squid is the single most important image in Watchmen.
Without it you have no chance of unravelling the story's riddle.
Google WATCHMEN UNMASKED for the Secret of the Squid.
