I would agree with just about everything Frank said but you have to admit it seems as each year passes more and more the difference between right and wrong and knowing what it is, is slowly slipping away, are we better people today or have we declined in our value system and gave into the pressure of societies idea of knowing what truth is, or do we have a book that can give us truth and if we had such a book would we know how to understand it?
holy shit this is awesome!! and they cancelled this show cause jon dickhead stewart didn't like it. Frank zappa is fucking hilarious. Imagine if these guys listened to rap music, they would go insane in the membrane.
“The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.”
I'm a Christian, and I would say I'm relatively conservative... but man I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Zappa here. That Lofton guy seems like quite a tool, I think it's funny that even the other old newsmen disagree with him and put him in his place at times.
I like Lofton's cheat sheet for dolts. He doesn't even realize that the title "We're Only in it for the Money" is sarcasm...then he tries to use a Zappa lyric against Frank "Take your teeth out". He's utterly pathetic.
Frank might as well have been sitting there with pinworms in the other seats. Like pinworms, they crawl around your ass creating itchy feelings. Lofton was a robot of the ultra-zombiechrists of the times, and the moderators probably had small bowel obstructions during the times of Elvis's hip gyrations. Why and how did this even become an issue? Because our parents and grandparents dropped the ball long ago on their own freedoms...this is why we need RON PAUL now ! Freedom is at stake !
I dont know whether its a good thing or a bad thing that the modern counter parts of these talk show hosts wouldn't mock so enthusiastically someone making the statement zappa did about americas steady road to fascism
I remember watching this in 1986. It saddens me greatly that even today, sixteen years later, we still aren't able to educate people to be confident enough in their own beliefs that they need to attack other people's choice of words...WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU MOTHER FUCKERS? That, by the way, is a genuine question and should not be taken literally and does not mean that you are having sex with your maternal parent.
Poor Zappa, good for him that he didn't live to see the rule of rap and iPhone... I think Mr. Zappa would would go totally ballistic if he heard rap or hip-hop or sound compression :)
@dvamateur Rap has been around since the late 70's. Zappa once commented on how he used to dress w/ a flipped hat and sunglasses in school before 80's rap made it cool. Zappa liked rap and would probably like the iphone since he was an electronic innovator/nerd/genius. You're wrong on all levels. Besides he used sound compression ALL the time in his studio
@johnaaron37 Well, well said by Rick Wakeman to the audience: "I understand that some of them know absolutely nothing about music. You might be lawyers, doctors, rap artists."
Rap is not as much about music as it is about social thing and rebellion of the youth. I think the hats, hoodies, and tacky chrome rims are more important in rap than the actual music. Oh, I forgot about the pants dropping below the butt. Yeah, that's really sexy.
@cellardoor199991 What kind of compression are you talking about? Compressor/limiter? Or compression caused by analog tape recording? Because the kind of compression we use today (MPEG-1 or MPEG-4) simply degrades the quality of sound in favor of convenience of making files small to make them download off the web faster. And yes, rap was cool in the 80s with a bit of a break dance. I wish the break dance would stay and rap would go. Rap is older than 70's. Rap has roots in African tribes.
Have to admire Frank. He stays calm all the way, only when called an idiot, he yells back.
These men are just stupid assholes. A democracy is much about freedom of speech. If you can't speak about anything, then you don't live in a democracy, simple as that.
Hot for Teacher Vid came out over 20yrs ago and these stiffs think that clip was controversial? Imagine this conversation was based on music vids of today? LOL
@6:20 What a moron. Of course the founders meant for the first Amendment to protect "bad" speech. Freedom of speech protects unpopular speech. Popular speech needs no protection.
In all this game, the devil is the victim, is the scapegoat, will be acused of everything cause the GOD don’t want any rivals. Conclusion: live at the full in the freedom of GOD (praying in a right form, following the INSTRUCTIONS in the Bible - keeping the 10 commandments - including keeping the Saturday as the 7th day etc.) instead of in the incapacity and limited power of devil cause he is just a temporary puppet. Jesus Christ is our savior and our hope!
@eahazell Absolutely wrong! devil is selling the concept of freedom which is a lie just simply because he have lack of power to make it happen, a looser from the very beginning.
The minority that know versus the majority that "THINK" they know. That is all this interview shows me. Frank Zappa wasn't stuck up his ass like these three people. I find it to be one of the most ridiculous arguments, because Lofton is shooting propaganda and opinionated rubish out of his ass left and right. Honestly, Zappa supported the 1st Amendment like it was his life and really, a hero in my eyes. He was trying to help maintain the fundamental liberties and freedoms of Americans all over.
god damn the prince song is sister and it definitely doesn't glorify incest it sounds like it's about abuse. C'mon loften get off your high horse and stop being so obsessed with fuckin yo relatives.
The founding fathers would be appalled to hear someone say America was founded on the Bible.
Many were Deists. They believed in God, but also that God took no interest in our petty lives.
It's amazing to me how fixated Lofton is on incest. And if you think about it, God advocated incest in the Old Testament. Adam and Eve's children had no one to pooch but each other.
When we buy a food item in the store, it's nice to read the label to see what we're buying and will eventually ingest. I think there needs to be a label on the CD package that provides some indication as to what the content is. That's not censorship, just information.
And Frank made the album 'Where only in in for the money' to make a statement about the bands of today ( 1960's ) Who only where in it for the money, i am 15 years old and i can see this.
If this Complete FOOL can see that he needs to get a few more brain cells in his tiny bird brain. FULSTOP.
Zappa got it right, moral codes are often imposed by certain theocratic organizations that have dark closets. John Lofton probably believed in being like Hitler unconsciously. Zappa was right again- all democracies become fascist. Plato was right - democracy is the worst form of government.
Lofton is still around and is now supporting the Constitution Party. The party's goal, as stated in its own words, is "to restore our government to its Constitutional limits and our law to its Biblical foundations." To this day he believes that our laws are based on the Bible. Truly, the man is a moron. To be fair, when Tom finally chimed in he seemed to be on Frank's side of the argument. He pointed out that people who favor censorship will never put a name or face to the actual censor.
Amazing to see three very very very pretentious and very very very stupid, senile men taking on a guy who has common sense and insight, and to see them making utter fools of themselves. It would be funny if it wasn't that sad. Hypocrisy is what rules the world.
Wow, bet you them 3 feel pretty stupid today if there not dead already, well we tried starting the tea party and Palin claimed that party, start a Zappa party
American Law is based on precedent. Where would a precedent for banning speech (in a song) end ? Also, meet anyone who doesn't swear and they'll teach you plenty of new expletives. Along with their curve from major to minor. From there I guess you say it's just temptation to say the word, and saying it is giving in. A bit like verbally masturbating in public, sometimes it's fun :)
I'm sort of disappointed with the emptiness of his arguments. I like Zappa, but surely he must realize that words aren't just words. Words have multiple structures, auditory and semantic - and inevitably carry potentially destructive implications with them. He's also very disrespectful towards the people in which he is engaging dialogue. Truly constructive debate isn't quite so middle-school-playground-like.
@jeffgraham91 Mmm... yeah, I gotta kinda agree with you there. I mean I agree with his side of the view, but (and maybe it's just by comparison to the other three) he doesn't really make a very good argument here in an intellectual way.
I do appreciate the way he got such a rise out of the suits though. That was entertaining.
@MrLaserprint I disagree with you here. As beings who make meaning of the world around us subjectively, nothing (especially not language) is so easily characterizable.
@jeffgraham91 i get what you mean completely but what i really mean is that the words themselves are just words but the important part it how people interpret them.
respect to the last music genius of our time !!!!!!!!!!!!! zappa is part of our history he is in the books ....... the 3 other guy ......who the fuck are they ????
them fucking american fascist ...its ok to kill childrren and civilian around the world in the name of 'freedom' ...but zappa lyrics are not ok !!!!! zappa was and still number one and the rest of you fascist are just a mountain of shit
Couldnt stand the dweeb with the glasses. Sort of wish zappa just decke him out. Wouldnt even listen to what zappa was saying. Its funny cause zappa was the one being considerate at least. Stupid tv talk show hosts couldnt understand anythin zappa was saying.
Funny how Brandenburg Vs. Ohio gave the KKK the right to talk about "killing niggers" but I still can't say "fuck" on the radio. What a strange fucked up country this is. Radio censorship is nothing but a form of corporate tyranny--if big corporations get a hold of something WATCH OUT, cause then their friend the gov will come and prevent competition of ideas and products!
ahhhhhhhhhh! The world is on fire! The world is one fire! Is...is it on fire? Crazy religious nuts are always thinking the world will end it I see a titty. They show tits all the time in Europe and nothing happens, except for crime going down, of course.
anybody else think its strange that once Zappa started to make the argument about America moving toward a "fascist theocracy" they went to a commercial break? and once they returned they had changed subjects??
Lofton's a useless yipping puppy & didn't listen to Zappa, belly-aching after he ate yellow snow. Maybe his real daddy was Will Hays (or Jo Breen)
Does Zappa think? harder faster better & -deeper than the two tools he's sandwiched between. They couldn't see the facism for the freedumb they beg to relinquish. Zappa schooled them. He didn't say the hope was in the vote, but in trying to RUN! mean=responsibility to effect change.
guys if you see this in a bigger way you could see that this is a battle between LIBERTY AND MORALITY. In my opinion its the person who decide what listen to, and if there are kids whell the parents are in charge of raise them and is that way of raise that give the kids of decide what its good or evil i dont think make the government decide what listen to its the desicion... thats not a free country!
When they go to break I recognize a Twisted Sister video. But what are the other videos? Whats the video with the leather clad musicians and the cool spinning sparkly devil star? =)
If Zappa could see what are happening know with some music, he probably will think more about his statments. Im agree in the fact that we must say what ever we want, but I think that we must think what we are gonna say. Are we gonna say something with grace and talent like or are we gonna sing that we have 500 bitches and we smack it all and that we are gonna fuckk all day and all that crapp music, and saying 1000 times i love you meaningles without anny imagination!
@memingas18 You are obviously speaking from ignorance and refuse to use proper grammar. Also Frank Zappa may have liked rap music. You sound like a dipshit with your tribalism and hatred. I can anticipate the likely reply, so before you go there, yes I like rap music. I wish I didn't, because there is nothing better than defending something you don't agree with. But I enjoy all genres, so now Shakespeare;
@x2f01mick I dont use propper grammar cause I dont master the language, And I didnt mean the rap music, if you read again, I wrote saying 1000 times "I love you" without meaning, cause there are so many, pop, rock and all the genres, even I like some rap music, almost of the early and midle 90's, This guy said what he wanted in a very elaborate and very stylish way. That's what i wanted to put on the table. The next time you want to discus with something doit in the right way,?
"Such inordinate and low desires, Such poor, such bare, such lewd, such mean attempts, Such barren pleasures, rude society, As thou art match'd withal, and grafted to!"
@x2f01mick What doeas Shakespare works when you don`t understand the basic point I wanted to said between my letters, that the most music we heard in tv and radio, are dooming the next generations. Sorry for my inapropate grammar, I least I try to speak another languages besides mine
@memingas18 I don't think the problem resides in the fact that people are making music without thinking, I think the it is the fact that more and more people are buying that thoughtless music. Instead of making intelligent citizens, the American (the rest of the Western world followed soon after) media (and to some extent, governments) have decided to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and have recently only made things with them in mind. Even the Discovery channel has reality tv nowadays!
@VAB0L0 I am agree, there are so many factors, obiusly Iam talking about we see in tv, casue we can find very interesting things in the internet and in the local and undergound media. The only thing is all we are going to hell muahah! XD
For all their talk of "protecting the family", they were quite happy to air this video in which Zappa brutally rapes Lofton.

He pointed out that people who favor censorship will never put a name or face to the actual censor.

srsly, he might as well be an inquisitor.

Amazing to see three very very very pretentious and very very very stupid, senile men taking on a guy who has common sense and insight, and to see them making utter fools of themselves. It would be funny if it wasn't that sad. Hypocrisy is what rules the world.

Zappa was dealing with a lightweight. If all your opponent can do is call you a name, you know you're right, and you know they know it too.

Man these guys are pathetic. Zappa played them like a fiddle! he gave them enough rope to hang themselves with & they obliged!

Truly constructive debate isn't quite so middle-school-playground-like.
jeffgraham91 1 month ago
@jeffgraham91 Mmm... yeah, I gotta kinda agree with you there. I mean I agree with his side of the view, but (and maybe it's just by comparison to the other three) he doesn't really make a very good argument here in an intellectual way.
I do appreciate the way he got such a rise out of the suits though. That was entertaining.
andrewquinn413 1 month ago
@jeffgraham91 The people he's talking to aren't to respectful either.

MrLaserprint 1 month ago
@MrLaserprint I disagree with you here. As beings who make meaning of the world around us subjectively, nothing (especially not language) is so easily characterizable.
jeffgraham91 1 month ago
@jeffgraham91 i get what you mean completely but what i really mean is that the words themselves are just words but the important part it how people interpret them.

@x2f01mick* Why?
memingas18 2 months ago
@memingas18 You are obviously speaking from ignorance and refuse to use proper grammar. Also Frank Zappa may have liked rap music. You sound like a dipshit with your tribalism and hatred. I can anticipate the likely reply, so before you go there, yes I like rap music. I wish I didn't, because there is nothing better than defending something you don't agree with. But I enjoy all genres, so now Shakespeare;
(Not enough room so next reply)
x2f01mick 2 months ago
@x2f01mick I dont use propper grammar cause I dont master the language, And I didnt mean the rap music, if you read again, I wrote saying 1000 times "I love you" without meaning, cause there are so many, pop, rock and all the genres, even I like some rap music, almost of the early and midle 90's, This guy said what he wanted in a very elaborate and very stylish way. That's what i wanted to put on the table. The next time you want to discus with something doit in the right way,?

"The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted."
-Maybe "The Merchant of Venice" but I'm not sure.
"Such inordinate and low desires, Such poor, such bare, such lewd, such mean attempts, Such barren pleasures, rude society, As thou art match'd withal, and grafted to!"
-Henry IV, part I

@x2f01mick What doeas Shakespare works when you don`t understand the basic point I wanted to said between my letters, that the most music we heard in tv and radio, are dooming the next generations. Sorry for my inapropate grammar, I least I try to speak another languages besides mine
memingas18 2 months ago
@memingas18 I don't think the problem resides in the fact that people are making music without thinking, I think the it is the fact that more and more people are buying that thoughtless music. Instead of making intelligent citizens, the American (the rest of the Western world followed soon after) media (and to some extent, governments) have decided to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and have recently only made things with them in mind. Even the Discovery channel has reality tv nowadays!
