This switch exist only in the books you read, but never happened in the history. The reason for this is because all Christian Slavs in Rumelia during Ottoman rule were classified as Bulgarians. To say that you are a Bulgarian at that time meant that you are a Christian Slav, not a Bulgarian by nationality.

zdenman - it was not an overnight switch. The bulgarians from the region Macedonia also had their regional macedonian identity. This regional identity was later exploded for political reasons. There is no "macedonian" ethnicity documented through thousands fo years.

@zdenman the artificial creation of a Macedonian nation began way before that but Tito and Misirkov completed it. it was Tito who changed your alphabet (just one of the things). As for 1873 I have my great grandfather's memoirs to go by. I would trust him more than anybody. In addition go check outside sources not what you read from Macedonian or former Yugoslav pseudo-scientists and historians.

Bulgaria existed as a state and nation since 681 on the Balkans (and before that in other places). It is oldest country in Europe. Bulgarians were always called Bulgarians since around that date. Macedonia existed in ancient time (they were a tribe that was close to ancient greeks) but current Macedon population is predominantly slavs which migrated in 6th century. Macedonian slavs never were a separate nation or country until it was created artificially.

This is very funny. If Macedonians felt like Bulgarians and liked Hitler, why would 100000 partisans go into the trouble of liberating Macedonia and fighting both against Bulgarian and German forces? First of all there was never such thing as a Yugoslavian national identity but Yugoslavians were people who lived in Yugoslavia which was a country that consisted of 6 states and 6 nations: Slovenian, Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Montenegrin and Macedonian. Second, it is true that Bulgaria claimed that they want to unite all the Bulgarian people in one country and the result of that is the map you see on the video that contains part of mine and your country as we know them today.
But there was one problem: It appeared that the people that they considered to be Bulgarian, in fact were, and are Macedonian, and they fought against the Bulgarian and the German in order to liberate the country and create independent Macedonian state. However Tito planned Macedonia as a part of Yugoslavia and because our partisans cooperated with the Yugoslavian Communist Party, our leader who wanted independence was sent in prison and later killed, and Macedonia became part of Yugoslavia.
The main point however is that the people you see on the picture are not Macedonian but Bulgarian, and that our side never supported Hitler, the Nazis nor the Bulgarian, but fought against them and won. This picture is twisting the historical facts in such manner that is really funny, but even funnier is the fact that people believe in these lies. Imagine how would you feel if someone says that you invited the Italians and the Germans in WW II and cooperated with them. Not very pleasant.

How is it possible for someone to fight with the aim of creating an independent state for the Macedonians if such nationality was "invented" in 1944? And by the way, before 1941 Vardar Macedonia was occupied by Serbia, thus an independent Macedonia meant that they have to give up a part of their territory...

This switch exist only in the books you read, but never happened in the history. The reason for this is because all Christian Slavs in Rumelia during Ottoman rule were classified as Bulgarians. To say that you are a Bulgarian at that time meant that you are a Christian Slav, not a Bulgarian by nationality.

As for 1873 I have my great grandfather's memoirs to go by. I would trust him more than anybody. In addition go check outside sources not what you read from Macedonian or former Yugoslav pseudo-scientists and historians.

Bulgaria existed as a state and nation since 681 on the Balkans (and before that in other places). It is oldest country in Europe. Bulgarians were always called Bulgarians since around that date. Macedonia existed in ancient time (they were a tribe that was close to ancient greeks) but current Macedon population is predominantly slavs which migrated in 6th century. Macedonian slavs never were a separate nation or country until it was created artificially.

This is very funny. If Macedonians felt like Bulgarians and liked Hitler, why would 100000 partisans go into the trouble of liberating Macedonia and fighting both against Bulgarian and German forces? Those people you see in the picture are Bulgarian forcing the idea "One nation, One King, One Kingdom" (the big picture, upper left corner) so they can gain rights to occupy whole of Macedonia and control Solun and gain access in the Aegean sea, since they failed to achieve that in the Balkan wars.

partisans were not macedonians, but yugoslavians, they were fighting to liberate yugoslavia,bulgaria was trying to unite all territories with bulgarian populacion, occupated after Balkan war by greece and serbia

First of all there was never such thing as a Yugoslavian national identity but Yugoslavians were people who lived in Yugoslavia which was a country that consisted of 6 states and 6 nations: Slovenian, Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Montenegrin and Macedonian. Second, it is true that Bulgaria claimed that they want to unite all the Bulgarian people in one country and the result of that is the map you see on the video that contains part of mine and your country as we know them today.

But there was one problem: It appeared that the people that they considered to be Bulgarian, in fact were, and are Macedonian, and they fought against the Bulgarian and the German in order to liberate the country and create independent Macedonian state. However Tito planned Macedonia as a part of Yugoslavia and because our partisans cooperated with the Yugoslavian Communist Party, our leader who wanted independence was sent in prison and later killed, and Macedonia became part of Yugoslavia.

The main point however is that the people you see on the picture are not Macedonian but Bulgarian, and that our side never supported Hitler, the Nazis nor the Bulgarian, but fought against them and won. This picture is twisting the historical facts in such manner that is really funny, but even funnier is the fact that people believe in these lies. Imagine how would you feel if someone says that you invited the Italians and the Germans in WW II and cooperated with them. Not very pleasant.

The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization which wanted to secede from the Ottoman empire and create an Independent Macedonian state was formed in 1893. How is it possible for someone to fight with the aim of creating an independent state for the Macedonians if such nationality was "invented" in 1944? And by the way, before 1941 Vardar Macedonia was occupied by Serbia, thus an independent Macedonia meant that they have to give up a part of their territory...

... It isn't logical for Serbs to provide a decret that would make them lose 1/4 of their territory. You can see how persistent they are trying to keep Kosovo. Once again: 100000 Macedonian partisans are the sole reason for the creation of the Macedonian state, not the Serbs with a decret, not anybody else. We say: You can take something from someone by force, but you can't give anything to anyone by force. Our independence wasn't given to us, our ancestors fought for it, just like yours did.

комшу, it's true that history is a strange thing, but it is also true that the history is written by the winners. The main place of the Ilinden insurgence was in Krushevo which is a part of Vardar Macedonia, so VMRO was formed to liberate all of territories (including and mainly Vardar Macedonia) inhabited by Macedonians, not Bulgarians. An overnight switch from Bulgarian to Macedonian identity as some historians say, and some people believe, is impossible.

I agree with you - my great grandfather grew up in Ohrid. i read his memoirs and he said that all of Ohrid considered themselves Bulgarian.

Bulgaria also had partisans so don't make it out like we didn't fight. But ask yourself - were we better off with Hitler or Stalin....That was what Bulgaria had to chose. It was great being invaded by the Soviets in 1945.....much better life than being invaded by the Germans....
By the way read some history - Bulgarian Tsar Boris was forced into this by Hitler (he died shortly after his last talks with him) and was most probably poisoned.
Bulgaria wanted to maintain neutrality.
