You can also get the St. Bernard security thing lots of schools have to think it's malicious software and delete itself. I don't know how it's done but a friend of mine totally fucked the whole school network for hours that way.
A variation is like he says, but instead of unchecking 'Show desktop icons', find a shortcut icon such as to Internet Explorer and just delete the shortcut. Then continue with his trick.
That will leave all the icons working except the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. The Quick Launch Internet Explorer will still work.
Having most icons work might be even more confusing than having none working!
