This doesn't work for me. I downloaded the various things you mentioned, opened the MKV using the directshow thing as you showed, but rather than the footage of the video, I just got lots and lots of grey. It'll play through (though I can't skip) but it's just grey; I don't think it's rendering it, basically.
In fact, it just says "dub in progress" at the top of the screen while playing it. In your tutorial you were able to just skip through and play it immediately, for me it's just saying "dub in progress" and being grey.
I love this tutorial. Thanks a lot. I've successfully created a GIF. However after I posted it on my Tumblr, the GIF won't play the animation no matter how long I waited (for loading, I guess). I'm new to tumblr too so is there a problem with it or it's just my GIF being too heavy? (approx 5MB)
urgh. i can't do it. some rsponses to opening .mkv file in vdm : AVI file importer error (it's .mkv godamit) and another error - crashed An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'VirtualDubMod'...
Please excuse my lack of knowledge but when I uploaded the mkv anime episode file, it said that VirtualDub had crashed. However I tried another mkv file and it worked. I'm confused now and I am not sure of what to do. Otherwise, I was able to make gifs with the mkv file that worked thanks to your tutorial!
First gifs I made were, like, 17mb (I resized ans cropped them, they were just pretty long). I looked through VirtualDub options and found Frame Rate Conversion in Video menu, selected "Process every other frame" and it magically made gifs smaller. Just like I wanted.
So, like... am I doing it right? And are there other ways to optimize gifs?
(Sorry for bad English, it's not my native language ._.)
This was a really awesome tutorial!! Thank you so much. The only problem is quality. I know GIFs aren't the best quality but it really seems to kill it in a gross way..
I have a problem , after 0:43 it tells me "Couldn't locate decompresor for format 'YV12' [unknown]. VirtualDub requires a video for windows. [VFW] compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video" Please help =(
@jasonta solution that worked for me: if you have ffdshow (and mos people have) run VFW config -> decoder tab -> codecs -> scroll all the way down to Raw video -> change disabled to YV12 (or try all supported).
*if it works for you vote up so others can a possible solution.
@tyraelpl This solution did not work for me. However, after attempting to open the .mkv, it made a separate file that was the --directshow version of it. I could open this up with the unmodded VirtualDub no problem, and proceed normally from there. Instead of 'save image sequence', though, I have Export > Image Sequence. From there, everything proceeded normally.
@tyraelpl Jeesus Christ it worked, thank you so much! I'll pray for your happiness tonight. Thank you so much, you're my wonderguard, I owe you my life. Thank you. Thanks. Arigato. Je t'aime. Thank you.
I am an anime fan, and for a long while I wanted to know how to make animated GIFs from my favorite MKV-formatted shows. A quick google search will reveal that there is no *easy* way to go about it. Sure, there are some of pre-packaged "converters" out there, but they lack MKV support as well as customizability. Not to mention cost and spyware issues. The method I demonstrate has none of these problems, and the programs used are freeware.
When I make my gifs with this method I cannot use it as my messenger profile picture. Says it's not valid image even though it supports gifs. All internet forums work fine. Any ideas?
@Xenobly I'm not experienced with gif making yet, but it might have something to do with the frame rate of the gifs you're making, or possibly the dimensions.
really well done video!! One thing that i thought was missing, was what if you wanted one frame to be a lot longer than all the others. Like individually timing each frame. Can u do that with your software?
@Kontext51 I found a workaround by just copying and pasting the frames that i wanted longer, but the problem with that is that it makes the resulting file a lot bigger. And for an avatar, the file limit is 100 KB. There has to be a better way.
@anonymousb37 I suspect, before you load the tga files into vdub, you should muck around with the files. copy the fames you want longer and re-name the files so they're in sequence. Vdub seems to load them into a movie using their file names
Very nice tutorial. I just made a quick GIF of the two girls kissing in ep 25 of Durarara!! and it turned out nice except that no matter how I change the framerate, the actual speed of the GIF remains the same. I wanted to speed it up a little...
oh my god, you're a godsend. i've spent like the past two days occasionally trying to make sense of scripts and codec packs and other programs when all i ever had to do was that drop down trick in vdubmod to get it to open things. thanks SO much for making a clear idiot friendly guide on this.
hm, i used this tutorial and it worked for me so thanks.. but how come whenever i upload a GIF image to an image hosting site like tinypic or imageshack, the framerate of the GIF always shows up as slower than what i had changed it to in virtualdub
@BambamCZ The same thing happened to me; the final GIF image played really slow on my computer. When I uploaded it to the internet however, it was the correct speed. o.o That's all that matters for me.
@Kontext51 Hey i need little help, what am i do with MP4 video? and how do you download anime video to VitrualdubMod? i was using download youtube from keepvid.com but i dont understand how.
