One thing I tend to notice, aside from the the obvious reactions, is the optical qualities of liquids. Things made from metals dissolved by nitric acid seem to have a reflective quality to them when they're in glass containers. Is there any special reason for this?
im gonna use this stuff to put in my hampesters feed so i can make my hampster take shits the sise of a dumpster on my grandmas ass drip of sweat cock
@shawnio Yes, science and chemistry is NOT the purview of good, ignorant 'murricans, sicence and chemistry is for TERRORISTS. The only use the average non-military, non 1% man on the street would have for expanding their horizons is TERRORISM.
Now, don't wet your bed too fast... But they are teaching things like this IN OUR SCHOOLS!
@prankmakers95 Mole is a unit of mass. Do a youtube search for 'mole'. That should explain things. If I am not mistaken, 15.6 molar nitric acid has a mass of 15.6 moles per liter of liquid. I just started learning about moles today, so someone please correct me if I am wrong.
M stands for molar or the molarity of a solution. it's how chemists measure concentration. For instance, a 1 molar solution has 1 mole of dissolved material for every 1000 mililiters of water. so, 15.6 molar nitric acid has 15.6 moles of nitrogen dioxide for every liter of water.
NO2 + H2O = HNO3. However, when nitric acid is reduced, it releases NO gas. This is readily oxidized by atmospheric oxygen. Dissolving NO gas in water theoretically would yield nitrous acid. Adding oxygen consequently oxidizes the nitrous acid to nitric acid.
@TheChemkid It means the number of moles in 1 L of water. That tells you how many HNO3 molecules you have per 1 L. Of course, the HNO3 is completely dissociated into H+ and NO3-.
@NurdRage i made thermite once, copper thermite, looked like graphite, so i threw it in our fire out of its bottle. lol. THAT was suprising. And yes, im okay, it was very little.
"The hard way" "Oh no! You've been exposed to radiation, and a mutated hand has grown out of your stomach! What's the best course of treatment?" Fallout 3 reference. Great video as usual.
Hey Nurd Rage your videos are awesome but can you tell me how to purify the nitric acid to exactly 15.6 moles? You said in the other video that you can't predict the exact molarity, so are there certain procedures I can follow to ensure the required molarity? Thanks.
@AlphaMaleRyan sodium and potassium explode probably because they get hot enough that they melt and disperse in the water causing a very rapid reaction that boils the water and perhaps detonates the hydrogen.
They explode in water because they want to loose the electron on their outer shell really really badly. the atoms also puurposly hold the electron far away from the nucleus, so it can easily be nicked off. when the electron is nicked off, the atoms become ionized and combine with hydroxide ions to form their respective hydroxides. what's left is hydrogen, and a whole butt load of energy; usually enough to ignite the hydrogen, setting off a whole new reaction.
@LegallyMoi Potassium and Sodium are Alkali metals. They have 1 electron, and they would do anything to give away that electron, thus, their high reactivity, thus when the are added in water, they explode.
You should so a video on the effects of pure sodium and pottasium in water and the power of it. Isn't it true that if you remove the pottasium from a bannana and make it solid that you would have enough to blow up a brick wall.
@xGhettoTeamx Because some things he does are dangerous to irresponsible people and he doesn't want people to trace him and also some chemistry things can be secret sometim,es and he doesn't want people to know it's actually him.
another point is that people tend to overreact when they discover you have these chemicals. (especially in america) for instance, hardware stores used to sell a 10% solution of nitric acid for treating wood. now they don't, because they think you're going to make explosives. (even though you'd be hard pressed to go through the work of making the nitrate, you end up with an "explosive" that probably isn't even that powerful.)
nevermind, i read all the comments lol. i seen what happened.. it still sounds very painful tho so i was right (just wallet/bank account painful not burning or something) lol sorry about that!
im going to guess that the Eu and Dy nitrates are going to be used to make some sort of fluorescent or phosphorescent mixture in the next vid, cant wait to see it , ive heard that fluorescent lamps use phosphors that contain Eu, Tb, and other rare earths
What about using a side arm flask with a funnel, rubber stopper and filter paper, and all hooked up as vacuum filtration? Would this be as effective as a desiccator bag?
I dont think so, I believe these substances absorb moisture from the air. I think it actually needs to be exposed to dry air for a long period of time.
Watch the dessicator bag video - It explains this well.
I watched the video but in my undergraduate classes to earn my BA in Chemistry and my BS in Biochemistry, we never used a desiccator bag. We did use vacuum filtration extensively in Physical and Inorganic Chemistry and I used it seemingly ad nauseum in my lab working for a Chemist. I was just wondering because Vacuum filtration would remove the water quickly and without contamination and the overall setup is country simple.
Vacuum filtration doesn't work with aqueous substances like the one in the video because the aqueous solution gets filtered through right along with the water. Filter funnels are used to remove water from precipitates, but these chemicals are too hygroscopic to precipitate on their own, thus a dessicator bag is needed.
because they cant have people finding out who they are. especially if they work for a company due to there being rules. that or maybe they just dont want all of youtube knowing who they are.
In this world full of liability, I can understand. The "chemistry" set that I got for my daughter was very lame compared to what I got when I was a kid. With hers, I do not think there is any possible way to get hurt, most likely including outright eating the chemicals. We tried to make it more fun by heating the mixtures for more punch, and finding stronger acids in the house. Hot orange worked well :-)

japanesepoptart 1 year ago
@japanesepoptart 15.6 moles of nitric acid it's HNO3 not NO2
also you calculate with 1000ml of fluid/acid not water
xXschoschiXx 1 year ago
@xXschoschiXx
1.f you dissolve NO2, you get nitric acid.
2. no, you don't. if you have 1 mol of NaOH, and dissolve it in 1000ml of water, you get a 1 molar NaOH solution.
it's no different for acids, except that it's usually a gas that's being dissolved.
japanesepoptart 1 year ago
@japanesepoptart
the anhydrous form of nitric acid is N2O5. N2O5 + H2O -> 2 HNO3.
BUT you will also get nitric acid if you dissolve NO2 in the presence of oxygen in water. 4 NO2 +O2 + 2 H2O --> 4HNO3.
If you were right how can you make 18.6 molar sulfuric acid (~100%)?
by mixing 18.6 Mol of H2S04 with 1000ml of water ...
xXschoschiXx 1 year ago
@xXschoschiXx
