Here is the thing with Jordan and the Doc. You knew that when the game was on the line and Jordan had the ball, it was pretty much over. Even though you can't say the same about the Doc, I would rather pay to see the Doc play instead of Jordan any time.
Dr. J was very good player, but he wasn't the greatest athlete ever. His leaping ability is overrated as well. That famous freethrow dunk wasn't even from the freethrow line. Dr. J played small forward at 6'6" 200 pounds. What was really exceptional about Dr.J was that he wad large hands, & was a long player with long arms. The only other player similar to Dr's physique was Connie Hawkins who was slightly bigger, and longer, with big hands as well.
@SamuelMoralesJr Shut the fuck up.....Dr J was an highflyer....back in the day nobody jumped like him....maybe only David Thompson, but Doc was the best
Only the best Doc moves and a great littie stevie tune make an irresistable combination. Seems like years ago someone did a Doc tribute set to the hauntingly melancholy, "No, one does it better.'' Probably it's best I can't find it because I could never seem to make it even half way through "Dry-Eyed.
ok, he's great but not better than MJ. You're IQ must be 68 if you think that. BTW, did you guys see the 2011 NBA Dunk contest? Ibaka dunk furthur than the free throw line and gave him a 45. He's a hypocrite bastard. But I still think he's one of the best of all time
did you ever notice Doc slices thru 3-4-5 guys all the time or you see 3-4 guys standing around just waiting to see... well whats he going to do next ... and does someting crazy you never saw B4... lolol ..

The only forward to score over 30000 points n was the 3rd to do it.. After chamberland and lou sanders or aka karime jabur .... The Man Julius The Doctor Errrrrrvinnnnnnnng
jordan and erving both had their own styles. They did things that blew people away. Its just that erving was before jordan, so the things he did were never seen nor never accomplished on the court. Erving started it all. Everyone just followed.
Doc was 6'7 210 lbs. Athletic and strong, had the perfect basketball physique and style. Could palm the ball and had the ability to play any position and dunk on anybody, anytime, anyplace. Regurlarly dunked on ABA/NBA centers and Bill Walton. Not too many non-Centers dunked on Kareem...Youtube has several of Doc dunking on Kareem. Yet to see Jordan dunk on Kareem. 16 years pro...16 all-star selections. That is amazing in any sport. His physique and large hands were exceptional though.
@mcentepede the living breathing TRUTH Also doc the only non center to scroe over 30k points and 3rd to do it I've seen Doc dunk on all thoes guys after slicing thru 4- 5 guys Doc made so many players famous when he slammed on them and they got caught in the poster shot (Picture)
Grew up watching the Doctor, carried himself with so much class and grace, that 82-83 team was a joy to watch and even Magic said that though the Lakers lost he was happy that Doc had finally won his title.
@Ninga0809 THANK YOU ... Finally someone says it loud...as much as i idolize Jordan and respect what he did, Julius Erwing made the NBA into what it became in the 80s and beyond, and deserves credit...
@Ninga0809 lol maybe on their ability to get to the cup, but jordans game was built so much more on his jumpshot then ervings ever was. dont get me wrong im a huge doctor j fan but they were both athletic with great hands which naturally made them both great at driving but you can say that about half the nba players now days. kobe and jordan truly have the same game style on the other hand
Saw him film a converse commercial in 76 or 77, Has anyone got that? He's dunkin over guys in blue San Anton jerseys. windmill from the corner, take off from the foul line, in the face of the big white dude. Guys were smart enough to get their hand out of the F*&f%ing way if its Dr. J!
He is better than Kobe LeBron and MJ combined. He was the first amazing swingman. Earl "The GOAT" Manigault is still the best. Dr.J and Kareem even said so.
@Etwitch24 Lol dont gas him, just because he was the first doesnt make him the best. That's like saying the first airplane was the best. Or Jesse Owens was the best sprinter. Not true. MJ > Dr. J
lebron said he doesn't deserve mj's #23 ,so he would change his number to his olympic and his 2nd favorite player's (dr.j) #6......that hurt dr.j 's feeling somehow. by the way , i don't think lebron deserve #6.
Now i see where michael jordan got his steps !!!!! cause this dude dunks exactly like mike, well done thanks for paving the way. However, NBA nowadays plays like high school kids its a shame!!!!!????.
@sweetmamaa1 Yep, people forget MJ was to be "the next Doc" people compare Kobe and MJ ridiculously, asking who is the greatest ever, Doc was the premier player from the mid 70s until the mid 80s. I would take him before KB as far as a leader nite after nite putting your team on your back gimme Doc. He lead them to 4 Finals recognize what he did when he got a good center(Moses) they ran thru the playoffs and swept the Lakers. Imagine if they had Moses sooner Doc would have at least 3 rings.
this is great because it is easy to forget the past. Doctor J was the greatest air show of all time. Some of the things he did is still not matched. the move at 3:27 and the michael cooper embarrassment will never be out done.
Mj may have ultimately proved to be better, but Dr. J was the innovator of moves that simply never existed before. His playing laid down a blueprint for all stylish bball players today, nuff said.
Great video..I grew up watchin the doc operate..the best IN-GAME dunker ever..check out the steal and breakaway slam on the Converse Dr J Commercial here on you tube, awesome.
incredible class , incredible athlete. what a gift his talent and dignity have been to the game. have never seen anyone in any sport as graceful and creative as the doctor.
#3 I got tickets for Christmas for Moses Malone's first game back at the Houston Summit after the trade to Philly. The Doctor scored 29 in the first half but the play of the game was the Doctor did an around the world flying one hander over a Rocket player that hit the floor right in front of me so hard that the ball ripped over my head at what seemed like 300 MPH. I had Floor seats under the basket.
ndmike you one lucky man to experience all that, i wish you would have recorded it for us hardcore doc fans,lol...i think i saw that brian winters play too. plus the other one he made between the arms of sindney moncrief and winters. he went up stayed in the air forever (and nowhere to go)when both bucks put their arms up to defend doc went between their armpits and flicked it in, the ball looked like it vanished but it went in the hoop like magic...it was awsome.
I was lucky enough to grow up in a farm town in Indiana. The Pacers were it and we got to see them on TV and highlights of the ABA on the News. Basketball was king in Indiana! When the Doctor showed up I became a fanatic and collected scrap books of Dr. J stories and photos. Still got em. Dr. J in the ABA was like an Eagle Soaring over a Canyon. People don't realize how spectacular and awe inspiring the Doctor was. We rooted for the Pacers and the Doctor to score 50.
#1 The Windmill slam dunk in the playoffs where Dr. J took off from the right side then whipped the ball from his ankles slamming the ball over Larry Bird, Rick Robey and Dave Cowens. A game against the Pacers in the ABA where he grab the rebound and went through the entire Pacer Team then took off from behind the foul line for the dunk.
San Antonio and 7 foot Artis Gilmore, a very good center back then. It was the 4th quarter...Doc took it to the rim...and dunked OVER a leaping Artis Gilmore for the deciding basket.
Yeah, MJ was great. But Doc was poetry in motion...He just looked better doing it.
he was a great shot blocker too. i think he made the best blocks i seen in a player. he would block a shot and make it look like he was swatting a fly. and he would make those blocks mostly when the game was on the line. i don't know why he never made more all defense teams. his steals and blocks always
The Doctor is the only player I have ever seen to block a shot, get the rebound and pass off for an assist without touching the ground. He did it on Brian Winters of Milwaukee in the playoffs. Winters was on the left side going up for a jump shot when the doctor jumped from just to the right of Winters and blocked the shot, grab the ball while in still in the air and hit Maurice Cheeks with a behind the back pass for a layup down court and he never touched the ground during the entire play.
In the ABA the Doctor had a blocked shot where he went to block a fastbreak on the left side of the rim when the player passed to a player on his right and the Doctor did a 180 while in the air and blocked the layup on the right side with his left hand. The play was against the St. Louis Spirits. Never saw anything like it!
Dr. J is my favorite player of all time. He revolutionized the game. And I get chills everytime he slams that shit around 2:18 seeing the crowd go wild, its my favorite in the entire clip.
he was a great passer too., unbelievable passes that arent documented. the no look , behind the back hanging in air pass, between legs, bounce passes,he had alota crazy passes.
Doc has bigger hands than Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I'm glad I was able to see some of Doctor J. He's an important chapter in the evolution of basketball and will remain revered and cherished by fans and students of the game.
The thing about the Doctor is that he was so graceful, using just enough force to make for great posters in bedrooms all over America. MJ was spectacular, of course, but he always seemed to be working so hard, making such an all-out effort. The Doctor was just too cool to break a sweat.
UNBELIEVABLE !!!! At 2:40-2:55, Doc is behind the backboard; still the most incredible move I've ever seen !!!! The only travelin' Julius did was in the AIR !!!!! SICK !!!!!!
Dr. J was the man! I rather watch this video a 1000 times rather than watch that streetball crap played in the gyms and arenas all over the US. Anymore, all want to get on Sportscenter and see if they can get the big bucks rather than helping their own team win games. Give a break folks! Read what Dr. J has to say about the modern day ball going on in the US. No wonder we getting our butts kicked in international competition.
Great collection..great song..great player. I like the dunk over Walton when you see Bill motion to the ref that Doc traveled afterwards. Yeah Bill..he took two steps while he was in the air. Long live the Legend of Dr. J!!!!!
Dr J was the most exciting player ever. It was amazing to me that he never got seriously hurt with all the high-flying he did... Some of the dunks on fast breaks, it almost seemed like he wanted the defender to catch up to him so he could slam it over the guy! I had the pleasure of seeing Dr J go crazy in Philly one night, the 76ers scored like 140 points or so.
Doc had those amazing hands. Yeah, some guys could jump like him. Not many, but some. But nobody had those huge hands with those long strong fingers. If you're Julius Erving, palming a basketball takes about as much effort as the rest of us mortals put into palming a baseball. Wow. The Doctor operates. There might be a scar.
The lay up around 3 Lakers behind the backboard, no one can top that, not even MJ or these new players. Even while wearing those short shorts. He is absolutely the baddest
i need a doctor.... xD

Doc has bigger hands than Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I'm glad I was able to see some of Doctor J. He's an important chapter in the evolution of basketball and will remain revered and cherished by fans and students of the game.

We had a photocopy of his hands in our locker room. Let's say his hands would easily cover mine, and I can palm 8 baseballs.

The thing about the Doctor is that he was so graceful, using just enough force to make for great posters in bedrooms all over America. MJ was spectacular, of course, but he always seemed to be working so hard, making such an all-out effort. The Doctor was just too cool to break a sweat.

The Doctor was the best EVER! I had been a Dr. J. fan since he came to the Sixers in '77. This video collection was great! Thanks!

I had the pleasure of seeing Dr J go crazy in Philly one night, the 76ers scored like 140 points or so.
karch139 4 years ago 3
I agree. very "who's is bigger" attitude in those days. Like the one where the guy tried to put a body on him and he ended up in the third row!
