Hey one thing you may wanna try with vtech toys, I've found that they actually produce different results when the batteries drop in voltage. At full it's 2.7 volts but as soon as they cross below 2.3 volts they start to scramble and become weird when making random shorts. It normally sounds the same but I guess it just allows more to happen, oh also with some there should be a hidden demo mode in things like phonics toys from vtech where it will go from A-Z and then all the sounds and repeat

Oh and for that lower voltage, what you can also do is just use the deep pitch bend till it's fairly low and will produce the same result.
