I won't argue that these guys are all extremely attractive, or that they have amazing voices.
But half the power of this song is the rising cadence and building rhythm of the original melody. Losing that just turns this into any other pop-R&B number on the charts.
I admit to liking the lead-in to the final chorus, and yes, the harmonies were good. But as a huge Wicked fan, I would have liked something closer to the melody of the original song. Just MHO.
First of all when you sing... You don't tell paint the story with your eyes... You paint it with your VOICE! every singer knows that. When it's musical theater it's with both. But they are just singing here. So it's different. That's all!
Josh Strickland makes me want to puke! He has a great voice - but the way his face contorts while he is singing is disturbing - and he breaks one of my gospel truths when singing musical theatre - and that is don't masturbate (meaning singing with your eyes closed) - its not always about you! Send your message - tell us the story through your eyes.
They are all individually-vocally good. But then, the arrangement for this song wasn't that good. They are all singing in high notes...There should a least be some low notes (base) in the song to neutralize the overall singing.
After 3:50, this reminds me of VH1's Divas LIve 1998. At the end of the concert all the divas sing 'Natural Woman' with Aretha Franklin and are desperately trying to out sing each other! Especially Celine-she almost splits her torso in two pieces trying to hit the notes while Aretha grasps for air to over screech her. By this point Mariah has given up and walks off to the piano. There Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain stand in the background not daring to even take part. A priceless performance...
I also don't like the arrangement at all, one of the most flawless Broadway musical songs ever written and to try so hard to change it and over sing it just ruins it for me, all the extra voices doesn't do it justice either, it's such a simple beautiful song, why try so hard to make it complex. I saw the show 6 times, Idina was by far my fav, her rendition of the song was incredible.
@loftboy79 Agreed. Don't get me wrong, I'm a harmony lover, but it's just too much for such a simple song. They did an incredible job vocally, but I just don't like the arrangement.
WHAT THE WHAT? The first dude was BLOODY AWESOME...I watched another video of this and the 1st and third dude, weren't that gr8 but all of these dudes are awesome...I really need to take voice lessons...okay that last sentence was random but pertinent nonetheless ;-)
I listen to this at least 4 times a day. It's very beautiful. Does anyone know if there's a studio version recorded and where can I download/purchase it?
@MidtownMoxie Thank you so much for that info! I listened to an excerpt of this on the album on iTunes and it doesn't have Josh Strickland :( And all the songs are ALBUM ONLY! I only want to purchase this song! lol
so who cares what key these guys are singing in or if the melody has been changed? these guys have used their talent and music abilty to re-create a song and make it their own.
just remember everyone..this is their interpretation..at the end of the day, they ALL sing their faces off..Listen to the musicality of the song! It really is beautiful
They are fully capable of singing all of the notes in the original song. It is not "too high" in the least for them. The last notes in this performance are the highest in the entire song and they do it perfectly fine. They change up most of the songs that they sing in order to adapt to having 6+ performers and be add originality. Short from coloratura parts, they could sing anything.
Um, it's called making it their own. Not every artist or performer sings it exactly the same. Heck, Idina Menzel never sang it the same way twice. I've seen three different Elphies and each sang it different. It's their way of claiming the character.
Eh not really a fan of this version. It's too slow. I mean they are amazing singers and it really shows off their talent. I'm just used to the stage version. They did an amazing job though.
OMG THEY CAME TO MY SCHOOL AND PREFORMED FOR USSS THEY ARE SOO GOOD!!!!!!! <3

it doesn't have to be in the same key to be the same melody....
pianogirl714 2 years ago
it says original key, not original melody, surely as a vocal music teacher you should know the difference hehehe.
